D-Link DIR-865L Cloud Gigabit Router $129 at DickSmith

2911

User edit 0740 9/5/13: Price adjusted. Now $129 ($29 after cashback).

Edit 1100 10/5/13: Cashback exclusion list now includes DSE. Purchase at your own risk.

Edit: Here is the reply from D-Link via email: "This new Ts and Cs only applicable for any purchases from 10/5 onward".

Edit: Here is a clearer cut-off point, straight from their again-updated terms and conditions: "Limit 1 per person per household only. Excludes Officeworks, Dick Smith, E-Bay & Unauthorised E-Tailers, applicable to all other retailers and channel and cannot coincide with any other offers. DIR-865L purchases from Dick Smith after 10/5/2013 10am AEST will not be eligible for this offer (previous purchases before 10/5/2013 10am AEST will be honoured)."

So that is it. The deal technically expire now since they no longer offer cashback for purchase from dicksmith. HOWEVER, REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS PRICEMATCH AT JBHIFI OR HARVEY NORMAN, IF YOU CAN FIND STOCK AT DICKSMITH

Basically, the same deal at Dicksmith at http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101972 but D-Link just have their new cashback promotion where they give $100 Cashback to purchases at ANY AUSTRALIAN STORES (except Officeworks).
I have checked dicksmith stock around Melbourne and plenty have stock.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

  • Limit 1 per person per household only. Excludes Officeworks, E-Bay & Unauthorised E-Tailers, applicable to all other retailers and channel and cannot coincide with any other offers.

      • Yup, sorry I meant losing. I was on my mobile when posting this and my mind wasn't clear at the time- was very disappointed about JB not wanting to price match :(

  • Very nice find for those quick enough to get one.
I'm not too upset at missing out. Will wait for a good deal on Netgear R6300 ac router. Netgear has a cashback deal occasionally.
    http://netgear.com.au/promotions/home-products/

  • Got one just now
they have two left on specials table :)

    • sorry Shepparton victoria

  • Grabbed one locally, thanks OP.

Looks like it's sold out on-line.

  • Got the last one in Darwin

  • No stock in Vic as far as I can tell; Moonee Ponds shows "low stock" but some lucky ozb above got the last one from there.

    I was way too slow.

  • Bankstown DSE said no stock but when i went in they just sold 1.

JB at Bankstown wouldn't price match as below their cost.

Got 1 at Menai though :)

For those who bought it just for the cash … any chance of donating your router to the DD-WRT development team?
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/community/donations

I'm sure the community would be awefully grateful if we could get ddwrt on this router =D

Honestly how many ozbargainers have an AC router?

I'm assuming everyone will be using theirs..

      • Well I read a couple of replies (perhaps in jest) stating some were only getting it for the $15.50 … how much shipping costs may negate savings though

        • Of course everyone is only getting it for $15.50, I am.

However as its an AC router I'm going to use it at home…

    • -1

      Or to me?

    • I'm assuming the solution would be to not have your administrative control panel open to the world, something you shouldn't do anyway.

      • Isn't remote access - cloud services the USP for this device?

        • Probably but I don't think many people will use it, who wants to remote into their router out of home…

        • When you're managing a home router from overseas or at work/school.
I would setup a VPN and certificate-based access via SSH but now it's easier to just use a remote control software on a PC on the other end connected to the Internet like teamviewer which punches through most firewalls as UDP traffic is not regulated.

I used to remote control a PC with teamviewer in uni from the comfort of my home because it had access to a development environment and servers which are resource intensive to setup in vmware in my own pc at home. They probably found it not worthwhile to block access in the firewall so they blocked access based on the installer signature many months later.

      • The attack doesn't require you to have remote administration enabled, all it requires is an active session to your router's page and then when you visit maliciouswebsite.com in the same web browser it achieves this

changes the administrator credentials and enables remote management services.

        • So definitely an exploit, just one that won't happen.

    • lol, almost most routers will have this issue, if you face the config menu to the world…. They aren't the smartest of authentications, and most routers don't use SSL and just use plain text authentication to log in.

Nabbed one from Runaway Bay, guy wanted to sell me the warranty for $15 … and wipe out my profit!

    • Yep. They tried that with me too

    • The lady asked $100 from me…

  • Price matched at JB Brisbane Adelaide St, still had a couple left on the shelf.

    • they palmed me off claiming it's a DSE pricing error. I think they took any remaining units off the floor.

  • Picked up the last one in Emerald Qld. Thanks OP.

  • Can anyone help me in comparing this to the DIR-825 Xtreme Routher N600 which was selling for $29 (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/97732)?

    • +6

That one costs $29 where as this one makes you $15

    • +2

the 865 is superior by far

      i have both

the 825 is hampered only 2 aerials… the 865 is not

to be honest the 865 is the fastest consumer router i've ever used

      • Thanks.

I have both as well. Will update the 825 and make it a repeater.

    • +1

this router supports wireless AC the 825 only up to wireless N

TO ALL PEOPLE POSTING UP THEIR JB RECEIPTS.. please blank out your receipt no. or something.. People can use this and grab a serial code from a box on shelf to make a claim

    • +4

Now everyone is scrambling to try that exact scam.

    • Who didn't blank out? I think I have.

    • How can you use a receipt no. to grab a serial code.

I know what you mean now, somebody may go and grab a serial number from the box and use the receipt.

Anyway we have all hide part of the receipt.

      • there was a full jb receipt above my post. They have now since edited their post.

        • OK, BTW the one I bought from JB the serial no. is covered on the box so I think may be the same everywhere.

        • mine are not covered

  • Jb wouldn't price match without any stores near me having stock and though one 17km might have had stock.
    still no.

  • I rang D-Link to clarify whether they needed the original receipt or whether a copy was fine. I was told a copy would be fine.

    • What number did you ring?

      • 02 88991800

        • +1

I emailed them they replied me a copy is enough.

        • Thanks for verifying.

        • When you go through the redemption process, and finally get to the page you have to print out it says aclear copy of your receipt is required to be sent.

  • All gone in Newcastle area. Some in Tamworth..

  • Can anyone let me know if I can use this router to print wireless with my wired printer?

    • Yes you can, just set it as wireless bridge and plug your printer in by cable. Of course you must already have wireless setup there.

      • Sorry for the noob question, but I am wondering if I need two computers to do this bridging thing? I only have one computer at home.

        • Check the manual I haven't set it up yet but all I understand you can use it to connect to your existing WiFi like a WiFi Extender and plug your printer in to the network port.

    • I presume you meant a wired printer with a network port and not a wired printer with a USB port? Because this router doesn't work with USB printers unlike some.

Otherwise what you need to do is convert this router to a wireless bridge. No additional computer is necessary. There was some discussion on how to do this earlier in the comments but generally: Set the secondary router to have the same SSID, password & channel as your primary router, disable DHCP & firewall, set IP to something that wont conflict with the primary router…. I think but I honestly don't remember. Have fun!

  • lame.

    • +3

      lol, Broden is that you?

      • Honestly I think everyone has become a little Broden these days.

        • +5

If he's bought all three units on the same receipt he might have trouble claiming the cashback for each unit as the promo is 'one per household'

        • -1

Dont know who "Broden" is and i bought on 3 diff receipts. one for me, one for my sis and one for my bro.

        • +1
        • +1

          lol wat a fruit cake!!

        • i hope they have different addresses as one claim per address

    • -1

lol all u fruit cakes down voting me ~ at least i am thoughtful to get my family things :P and if u read the terms and conditions the cashback is returned by money order to that registered person at that address.

    • damn you I was there just a little after three… guy said i just missed out, now i see why

  • +2

LOL, there's definitely more votes now then the number of units available.
I reckon Ozbargain should track how many voters were actually able to purchase the listed bargain.

BTW, I bought one unit at Watergardens.
The guy even chucked in a free 1 year warranty.

    • what do you mean by free 1 year warranty? is that extended 1 year warranty ?

      • yes, extended

        • already comes with 3 years warranty
3 years is pretty much the life of a router

        • True, although I do have a 4-5 year old one still going strong. Use it as a repeater for a newer router.

        • i usually buy Belkin's
They offer Life time warranty, and when the router dies you get the newest model comparable to your. They also pay return shipping.

I had one that died and they upgraded me to the DB600 last year

    • Any left in Watergardens?

      • Not sure, I did an online order for pickup so I didn't have to go to the shelf

    • http://www.abc.net.au/tv/thecheckout/episodes/ep03.htm watch the part about rights for returning items :)

      • The link is blocked at my workplace.
        What's the video about?

        • its mostly just about consumer rights and that you can return an item if it breaks within the reasonable life span of that type of product which is much longer then 1 year :)

      • WTF? So they are really $62?

        • Yes if you get the extended 3rd party warranty I think

  • no stock in melb anymore

    • +1

      Are you sure?
I'm not going to miss this one.

  • No stock in WA!! :(

    • Try gateway. Got 1 earlier from there

      • Same here. Reserved mine over the phone about 10:00 am.

        • LOL .. i was there at 9.44am according to my receipt …
well cone we scored the router

  • I bought the last one at Golden Grove Dick Smith in SA a few hours ago, NO STOCK LEFT ANY WHERE IN ADELAIDE NOW.

  • PRICE MATCHED!

I actually bought this last week from DSE for $84.50 and was feeling good about it at the time, but I felt really violated after I read this deal and found it only applied to purchases from this week. Not to be outdone, I put on my best 'professional' face and marched into the local Harvey Norman and asked for a price match (down from $299). They were only too happy to match DSE after confirming the price on the web page, for $84.00! Now I have two of these units, one will be put into bridge mode so I can actually use it at full AC to AC speed, rather than use a slower half-assed USB2 dongle at $100. So pleased with myself today :)

    • +2

I just sent a bunch of e-mails to local Harvey Norman stores, let's see if any of them will accept my price match.

  • Got one at harvey norman Price matched it at $87.

    Best price guranteee :)

    • Could you please upload your receipt after blanking out some sensitive information?

    • +1

It was priced at 84.50 online though, they are fleecing you out of 2.50.

    • +1

Which Harvey Norman did you go to? and how did you do it? Just show them the Dicksmith's website?

    • You are lucky.

      HN T&C
      3. To be eligible … The competitor must have, or had the identical product in stock at the time the product was purchased by you.

  • Is it possible to get two and get a cashback on both? Two people but in one house.

The T&C's states: "Limit 1 per person per household only."

    • i would lean towards 1 per house… so just use your folk's address

edit: you should also have 2 receipts (each purchased separately)

  • Almost 5 hours since I placed order and still no updates…..

    • +1

      call them

    • +1

If you haven't received an email after 2 hours confirming that the item is ready for pick-up, the DSE website suggests you call the store.

      • Alright, ill give them a call!

I do remember that my last click and collect took them a day or two to confirm the order…..Maybe the employees at my local store are just really lazy…

Edit: Looks like they didn't reserve one for me.

The guy said he would go and see if he could find one/ order one in for me, but I don't have high hopes…..
