  • I looked into them as my contract end-date with Vodafone is approaching (counting down the days). After reading some reviews on Vaya I decided it might not be a good idea. Particularly their customer service does not seem to receive praise.

    • would you be able to point me to those. I have a friend and he has not complained about it but neither has he spoken very highly of it.

One of the comments on http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/92065 also appears to reflect similar sentiments to the comments in the first link.

Having spent many many hours arguing with Vodafone staff (over whether the phone they gave me supported 850Mhz or not - which of course it didn't) I have decided it's just not worth the frustration to repeat the experience with a different provider.

        • Personally, I think Vaya is for those who are more tech-savvy, who are willing to take things into their own hands. For example, I had to chase up Vaya for almost 2 months to get a port from Woolworths to Vaya.
If you wanted something which came, as it, ready to use, then go with Virgin/Optus/Telstra.

Your argument with Vodafone staff over the phone is irrelevant. You could've just google'd it and saved yourself the effort.

Other than that, once I got it connected, their service has been flawless.
Only Optus's satellite gives me a no-coverage area in nearby suburbs.

        • Having to argue with call centre staff is hardly "taking things in your own hands". It's not like they hand over control to their system because you sound "tech-savy".

As for my argument with Vodafone: it's just an example of the frustration of arguing with staff who don't listen/understand. And if "googling it" was the answer, then by your logic Vaya is not the way to go, because they don't get much love on most websites.

Ive made more calls to them than I have had days with them

Just my 2 cents. I've been with Vaya for 1.5 months (not long) but I've been happy with them. The only slight issue I had was with porting for my brother which took a little longer than usual (from TPG -> Vaya).

      Customer service-wise, they've been fine.

I've also wondered… this is pretty off-topic, but why is it ok for us as consumers to judge a company/restaurant on one negative experience, while we are taught by society to NOT do the same when it comes to gender/race (which would be sexism/racism)? Why is it acceptable for us to be like this for a company/restaurant?

      • one negative experience? 31 of the 50 reviews say it's "bad" or "terrible".
I don't quite understand your analogy. I know you mean well, but I'm not sure it applies.

        • I don't like online reviews. I mean, I am more likely to go out of my way to write a review if I had done a negative experience, Do you review every product that works as it should?

I reckon about 80% of people who are writing reviews are writing sbout negative experiences. Even if it is very rare

        • That is true. Ratings/votes are only meaningful when compared with other brands, because on their own they are biased towards the negative. I usually focus on the facts stated in the reviews, not the opinions. Many reviews state events of things which have happened to them.

        • I haven't actually seen how many negative reviews Vaya have gotten. Basically what I mean is, if we see someone of a particular race exhibit a stereotypical behaviour (e.g. we see 3 Asians playing video games - "OH all Asians are nerds that play video games!!") we are brought up not to use this incident as "representative of the entire Asian population". However, when we have a bad experience at a restaurant with a waiter, or a bad experience with a company such as Vaya, it is ok for us to base our impression of the restaurant on that one single experience we had with the company/restaurant.

Do you see what I am saying? As I said this is very off-topic but something that just came to mind.

I agree with Mattwilko below. When it comes to restaurants, businesses, companies, apps, people are more inclined to give a review when they've had a negative experience with it. Generally positive reviews are from people that had exceptionally positive experiences. Everyone in between doesn't leave any review.

Not too surprised for them have extended this deal as they did with the first month free access, which was supposed to be available for only January.. then February.. then March. Then 4G came along! But really great value for money for 4G. Best on the market I believe.

Did a bit of digging around Whirlpool (sorry if I'm not meant to mention that here), and one of the current issues revolving around Vaya at the moment is that they bill data usage by MB, rather than by KB. This means each session of data you use rounds UP to the nearest MB; even a simple push sync will result in Vaya recording it as 1MB. It is being currently investigated and a rep from Vaya is saying that they intend to implement changes to their data billing in June.

    • Does sound a bit crappy, but doesn't really matter much for smartphones. I think it would matter more if you constantly start and end your data sessions (frequently turning on/off your mobile internet?).

    • Yes, I can confirm that. it's a frustration but you can add 1gb for 7 dollars a month, not so bad.

      • Does this affect the 4G plans only?

    • yup 100% agree with you. they bill it as 1MB is really really crazy. on my old plan im i hardly use 500mb out of the 1.5GB. but with new power plan im already at 800mb in less than half a month. so basically 1 whattapps message or 1 iMessage= 1MB of internet gone. you Load Google.com.au= another MB. You received a facebook notification= another 1MB. trust me they do add up really quick

      • Wow, saying 1 MB per Whatsapp message really puts it into perspective. From what I've read on Whirlpool, people are logging their data usage and in case Vaya claims that they used excess data then they are going to use those logs as proof.

      • yeh im not sure that's how it works.. specially on a smartphone.. if that was the case.. I send 4000 messages on whatsapp on vaya4g.. i did 621mb in 12 days and i surf the net, streams utube too

    • It's important to note, it's not each session that gets rounded up. It's EVERY REQUEST FOR DATA. What this means is that if you lead a webpage, you pay for a minimum of 1Mb. Then you click on a link, another 1Mb charged.

I was on Telstra prepaid and never one went over my data allocation of 800Mb (on their $40 plan). After one month of use with vaya, with an initial allocation of 1.5Gb I had to top it up twice and would have still run out of data again before the month was up. Cost me $42 for the month I was with them and the month hadn't finished.

      Vaya is NO BARGAIN.

Also the optus 4g network has a lot less towers, meaning you are transmitting over longer distances, using more battery power. The day I changed to vaya my battery life was at least 30% less.

All in all, do not go with vaya, my first reason is solid, the second is an added anti-bonus.

      • well .. loading a webpage is never just one request for data either .. it many - for the content and each image.

        • It's true but I don't think they take it that far, however it's still pretty ridiculous and i can't stress enough how much I recommend to stay away from Vaya

      • +1

This sounds terrible. I will hold my horse and wait till June for them to get the act together. It's ridiculous to get billed for MB instead of KB.

  • hopefully this is still around when my contract with vodafone ends mid june :)

  • +3

Pretty sure that girl doesn't have any lenses in her glasses

  • Which network do they use? Optus?

  • Vaya has been OK for me in the 6 or so months I've been with them. EXCEPT, they triple charged me on roaming fees (which are laid out very clearly on the Optus site - I was in a $5ish/min zone and was charged around $17/min). I haven't had time to follow it up yet so I may have been in the wrong but I sincerely doubt it. Just be careful if you roam on them and be sure to check your bill.

(the call was for an emergency so please no comments on what a moron I am for using international roaming)

Cost of a SIM: $20 (except on 24 month contract)
    Cost to close account: $30

So to switch to Vaya would cost a minimum of $50.
    http://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Additional%20Fees%20and%20Cha…

    • +2

if you wanna close your account just buy a $2 sim and port it out. you dont even need to give any notice.

      • Have you tried that? Is that a successful way to circumvent the fee?

        • personally no. but i will port my number out to telstra prepaid tomorrow (getting similar value+ bill per kb as well as better coverage). anyway many people on whirlpool forum port out before with no problem. Also Ben (ceo or manager of Vaya) declare that you wont get charged if you port out.

        • It also clearly states in critical information document that there is no fee with porting.

        • I think that's about porting the number, and is independent of account related matters (I think - but am not sure)

    • deleted.

    • $20 a SIM is a joke.

      • first month free.. so pretty much works out to be free… plus port away fee = 0$ and can do it anytime.. so anyone who had a whinge abt this now knows they can stop pissing their pants

        • Anyone calls $20 for first month is "free" must be pissing their pants without noticed ?

  • I am a little confused with vaya's critical information.

    http://www.vaya.net.au/downloads/CIS-POWER-PLAN-22.pdf

So as an example, SMS, MMS, videos calling and ???voicemail??? overseas is included in standard credit but NOT voice calls? There is no mention about international voice calls anywhere (apart from if you're roaming when you're overseas…which is normal really). So I can leave voicemails but can't make a voice call?

Anyone with experience care to help? I live in an area without Optus 4G coverage anyways so that doesn't impact me…but my vodafone contract has just expired and I want out! I don't even get coverage in some areas where I live! Which is absolutely ridiculous!

  • Just don't go to vaya, they are awful and their data billing is incredibly sneaky.

My reasons are stated in a post further up but making another post because it's worth bringing attention to and ozbargainers should know because vaya is no bargain.

    • I wish there was a "I'm no longer associated with vaya" button :-)

  • Currently on Vaya's older $11/month plan, no real gripes with anything, except their slow service reply time.
Data is pretty speedy, i don't use much of it outside of wifi, but when I do I use heaps of it, so I don't really have much of an issue with their 1mb block 'rounding up'.
Only problem I had was with them sending me their APN settings in a timely fashion, which you can do yourself on Optus' website.
For the pricing, you really should know what you're getting into. I wasn't expecting Virgin level of customer support, for pretty much the same plan I was with them for $19/month.

  • beside the fact this is a dupe deal from last month, its still a pretty good deal (shites on LC)

  • This deal is not that great as the data is rounded in MB which means every time you send a whatsapp or iMessage or Wechat messages, you get billed for 1mb. Every time you check FB messages you get billed for 1 MB. This will blow up your quota in no time.
I read the horror stories on whirlpool where people had to log all the usages to prove they never exceed the quota.

    • yeah, mine was blown up to more than three times my actual usage

  • +2

For those who didnt understand what it means by 1mb increment, here you go. Just using whatsapp for less than 10 message.

    http://db.tt/oVJGxUhQ

    • What plan are you on? Cause on Power Plan 22 and above you get unlimited SMS anyhow, but yeah, can see how 1mb increments can add up!

      • -1

that is for NORMAL sms. he is refering to whatsapp message which uses internet data.

        • +1

Yes, i know that, but i was just pointing out that if you're on 22 or above you get UNLIMITED sms anyway so you don't need to use whatsapp which is using up data.

  • Yes, I am on Power Plan 22 :)

    • I was also on the power plan 22, after having to top up my data three times I paid $43 for the month, ending up costing more than Telstra, which although it has less data, turned out to be more than I need because of the Kb billing. Also, it's Telstra's 4G network which is much better.

Unfortunately, as much as I hate Telstra I do love their network and after experiencing Optus' one, in comparison anyway, I can't see myself switching again, until Optus puts in a bunch more towers. On Optus I was only getting a 3G connection in the middle of the CBD about a third of the time, HSPA+ another third and then 4G the remainder.

  • I switched with the last deal, and wasn't aware about it being rounded to the next megabyte. I just checked my usage and apparently I used 136 MB of data yesterday. Yesterday was just a standard day, I didn't use it any more than normal. That doesn't seem right to me at all.

Based on that number I would need a 4Gb plan, so would need to buy three $7 bolt on packs on top of my $17/month which is $38 a month. Does anyone know of any 4G plans cheaper than that? I might just go back to 3G TPG where I never used more than my 1.5GB and never charged more than my $15/month…

    • Yeah, it's the 1Mb billing blocks that is doing it for you. I had three bolt ons in a month. I think LiveConnected bills by Kb blocks but don't really know how good they are otherwise. If you are looking for cheap, obviously steer clear of telstra but if you can see yourself stumping up $40 per month, i'd recommend it. With the plus packs and whatever it comes out to about $650 of cap usage and 1.6Gb of data.

Hi all, for the skinny plans, the data increments are in KB. The CIS is wrong. Please see Facebook chat with Vaya.

    Me:
Hi Vaya, thanks for the clarification. But the CIS for the $18 Skinny Plan says under the heading 'MONTHLY DATA ALLOWANCE' that "If your data allowance is used in any one calendar month, you will be charged an excess charge of 4c per MB, billed in increments of 1 MB. ….. Data on mobile networks counts uploads and downloads."

Please clarify because your CIS does mention increments of 1MB

    .
    Vaya:
Our sincere apologies for this and thank you for addressing this.

Please be advised that with our Skinny Plans range, the data is definitely calculated in KB increments.

    Sorry for the confusion.

    Me:
Does that mean you will be revising the CIS? I suppose you will have to!!!! "

    • +1

That's nice for the skinny ones but the power plans still have the outer mb charging
