Should be the newer gens, first gens aren't called "smart covers" and only came in black.
Compatible with all, though the newer ones also released with the all-round Smart Cover with backing.
Wow so much wrong in this comment. Not compatible with "all". Won't work with iPad 1. Also not all new ones are "all-round", Apple still sell both Smart Covers and Smart Cases.

Both of mine from Macquarie (Sydney) works on my iPad 4. There's still some stock there.

Smart covers for iPad 2 will not auto-sleep/wakeup when putting on iPad 3 or 4.
The polarity of the magnet has been reversed.You have a 50% chance of the magnet working in the ipad 3 or 4. They didn't reverse the polarity they just made it so it has to be the right polarity in the ipad 3 and 4.
Are these genuine smart covers? Cause try retail for $30-70 depending on material.

Actually, MD309FE/A is the current version. Apple's current versions have matching colours on both sides of their Smart Covers. The earlier versions were grey on the side that would touch the glass.
There's no way of knowing what version Target will have (without opening), so iPad3/4 owners should at least be cautious.

Can confirm this at Morayfield Target in QLD.
They had 2 on Sale on Saturday:

- Green Poly Smart CoverI purchased the Red Leather one and very pleased.
There other covers but were Full Price or only slightly discounted.
There were still around 6 grey and 3 green in Melb CBD this morning.

I brought one of the grey ones in the Melbourne CBD store this morning, and it was the last one of the grey ones. There were two green ones left if I remember. Mine's not going on eBay, its on my iPad at the moment and luckily it had the right polarity so it works with the open and unlock.
What time did you get yours? I got there at 8:45 this morning and the staff said someone bought all remaining covers few minutes earlier. He told me I could get the pink one at $44.
It would have been 8:40 or 8:45, so I must have got in just beforehand. I remember there were only two green ones left and there was a guy looking at them when I was leaving. I'd say you literally just missed out.

Target Shepparton, VIC had about 8 or 9 left. Colours at this price are only grey, green and red. Also, only the older models with the exposed metal hinges. (Newer models have more durable enclosed hinges.)
It's worth noting that there was no signage to indicate the clearance price. The sticker prices still said $59.88 (red), $34.88 (green and grey). I had to take one of each kind and scan them at the price check point to work out which were available.
Just came back from Bull Creek WA Target only has blue, black and red for full size iPad. No Smart Cover for iPad mini in that store. There is a big pricing screwed up there as all red scanned $9.83, 1 black $9.83 1 $77! All blue are $44. Note that only the front cover and the 2 I bought wake up function work flawlessly on my iPad 3. Best to bring your iPad, scan all the covers and try the wake up function at the spot before you pay for it.
Edit: there was 1 black, 4 red and 4 blue when I left.

One Green left in Liverpool NSW. There's no price tag but when you scan, it's $10.
None left at either Broadmeadows or Airport West Targets (Vic). Both said they only had 2 or 3 in stock to begin with and sold within minutes of being marked down.
There is about 6 of each colour remaining in Target Blacktown.. Scanned to confirm price… All discounted to just under $10.. Go crazy OzBargain friends!
Not sure this thread is dead, just found out on the box of the smart cover printed "Compatible with iPad 2 or later" for my black one and "Compatible with iPad 2" for my red LEATHER one. Both their wake up functions work on my iPad 3 though.
LOL just found out Apple official website is selling the leather ones for $79!!

Went to Hornsby the guy said some already asked to scan it but came up full price. BTW it is the red one.
There is a barcode at the back of the box. Just scan that the price will appear. There is no label or advertisement stating the smart covers are oon clearance or anything at all. The price tag on the shelf is still $44 but you just have to scan them 1 by 1 yourself.
Like I said, a big screwed up on pricing at Target. If you want my receipt with the model number and colour etc on the box I'm happy to upload but please teach me how to do it (sorry noob here on uploading photos).

Just letting you guys know: In Melbourne, I've called Chadstone, Camberwell, Bentleigh, and The Glen, and the only colours remaining out of those four stores are Blue and Pink, neither of which are on sale.
None available in Brisbane CBD, but went to Harvey Norman, showed them the pic and they price matched.

Jut got the last 2 red leather at burwood target. I would suggest if anyone sees any left, get them to scan the actual item. Sales rep was saying its $77 so I insisted he scan the actual item not the display barcode. It came out to be $10 each.
