  • Is this just for Mastercard?

    • In the T&C bloomingdales specifies "Mastercard only" Macy's does not. So try Macy's if you don't have a Mastercard. Macy's has a pay with paypal method.

Catch is with anyone that uses FiftyOne like these companies do is they charge you more for being an Australian (in my experiece it's usually around 30%). Their postage isn't too bad though. Bought some stuff from Macy's recently for my wedding and the postage was only $28 for it to be courriered although dispatch took about 3 weeks.

Also if you have a Virgin Velocity membership, you can buy via their shopandearn site and get velocity points.

    • What is fiftyone?

I was going to say to be aware that Macy's charge a hidden 'Australia' charge, separate to the shipping charge, where the items they sell offshore they sell at a higher price than their normal price. Not sure if that's related to what you're referring to.

Fiftyone is some sort of international purchasing e-commerce thing based in Israel. From what I gather they're the ones who do the credit card charging and localisation of website and stuff. Pretty much company that uses them will charge the Australia tax.

Hmmm seems they've been rebranded to 'borderfree'.

  • How does that work if you're shopping on a US based Macy's site?? You're choosing from a universal price list (ie for shoppers from everywhere, including US domestic). There can' be a 30% uplift on such a site…. Or are you suggesting that they send you to a 'Macy's for Aussie shoppers' site that has a 30% uplift…technology to do this does exist, unfortunately!!

    • When you enter the Macy's website they ask if you're shipping to Australia - if you say yes they redirect you to their Australian website which has the uplift in prices.

      • You'd have to be a schmuck….

        • Except you can't purchase shipping to anywhere else unless you have a CC from that country. So you'd need to use a reshipper/shopping service like Shipito or PriceUSA to avoid the high costs. But the reshipper fees + courrier costs you wont save much if anything.

As mentioned I paid $28 for postage of 8 items of clothing, all fairly large and made from heavy linen. Courriers would have cost more than $28 to deliver that lot.

The main reason I bought from them was even with the increase costs, they had a sale on and the stuff I wanted was still significantly cheaper than elsewhere.

All the prices are 20% higher if you select Australia as your shipping destination. (You can check this by browsing the site in US dollars/shipping to Australia vs US dollars/shipping to US.

I was very tempted to get a few items but I'm not going to brook such open price discrimination.
