Lumina (Aldi) Convection Oven $14.99 (North Sydney Store)

420

Marked down to $14.99(from $24.99) at the North Sydney store. About 10 boxes in stock.
Probably other stores too?

Great oven - haven't used my normal oven since getting one of these
as it's pretty much "set and forget". Great for pizzas, pastries, roasts.

One supposes it could use a fair amount of power.

Could a 2nd store verify the availability of product not featured in Aldi catalogue.

    • +1

Would it use more power than a standard oven?

Aldi Manager specials are store specific.

Thought that heading posted the lumia Nokia phone, until reading everything else.

Called Aldi - you will physically have to go into a store to see if they have any available

price match in other stores around Aust. - Aldi advised me -
it is up to the discretion of the store manager if they will reduce the price to $14.99
maybe print this off & take into the store - absolutely NO harm in asking

      • Yeah, the North Sydney store is a good place to look for remainders. Maybe because of the limited space. Another Aldi I've picked up remaindered bargains from is the Top Ryde store.

  • Half the Price that other retailers sell these for…

(The Halogen version gets better reviews- but heaps more expensive than this element type)

Would you please explain about "element" and "halogen" types?

I had one of these from Kmart, and it was excellent (until it stopped working) and it had an element that glowed bright red. I am assuming that this was the element type.

The one from Aldi glows bright white and lights up my whole kitchen. Is this a halogen one?

      • Not sure which brand it was re: halogen.

Maybe someone has bought this for $49 ?
        http://www.homeart.com.au/3054.html?keyword=oven

I have a cheapie (glows)red element -ok for reheating but not much good for baking cakes etc.

      • I have a Sunbeam oven that cost under $100. It's an element type. I find the cooking to be a little uneven when heating up frozen pies. It does a better job with fresh foods.

Before this purchase I did look into the element v halogen question. Suposedly, the halogens might not produce high enough temperatures and could become less efficient, through use over time, to safely cook foods. They can also blow as they are just light bulbs.

Prior to owning the Sunbeam I had an unfamiliar branded one called Imarflex which was made in Spain. It too was an element type. I bought it in the 80s while on holiday in Singapore for around $200 Singapore dollars. Back when electronics were cheaper and Singapore dolars was much lower than the Aussie dollar. This one was great but unfortunately it died a few years ago.

I guess with these things it really is a case of what you get is what you pay for. If I had to purchase again I'd probably try the $200 one they have at Myer.

bought one before, these are horrible things to use. although it is fan forced, the heat distribution is lousy. things take a long time to cook and if you turn the heat up, it gets burnt on top. I tried to cover the whole thing in foil to reflect some of the heat back into it that is lost through the glass but it's still no good. My mother has one that she paid nearly $200 for and it roasts like a dream. but this cheapo aldi one is not worth any money IMO.

I love using these convection cookers. We've had to replace heaps of them over the years, I haven't had any experience with the ALDI one, but some of the more expensive ones are really worth it. I'm not sure of the brand, but a recently bought one that cooks stuff very well, best we've had, and its very good for reheating. (and its really bright but you get used to it).

I agree. You do need to buy quality with these, I have had a cheap one, & the whole glass bowl exploded, leaving glass shards all over the kitchen!
I now have the Danoz -Flavorwave Turbo, & it's excellent. I use it everyday & love it! Found it for $50 off eBay!

Both myself and my parents had the exploding glass issue with these aldi convection ovens a few years ago. Maybe they have improved since but I wouldn't buy another one.

Check for recalls. It looks like Aldi is safe for now.

I purchased one from BigW but it was recalled within 2 months.

I had one of these things, el cheapo identical to this but from GoLo. Used it 2 or 3 times then flogged it on Gumtree.
It verges on being useful for a door stop and nothing else. Virtually useless for cooking anything.

Maybe the dearer ones are better as Dexxi pointed out above??

I bought one of these from Aldi for $25 a couple of weeks ago. So far it has worked really well. Have successfully cooked several things in it.

It does light up half the house though. It is extremely bright do not look directly at it when it is on.

I've owned one of these for the past year or so and love it. Haven't used regular oven since owning one. why would I when this one heats up quicker, uses way less power and is easy to clean.

I think beatlebob is reffering to the wall oven… which you wouldn't even sell

    These ovens are very useful.

I haven't used my wall oven for years.

    I have done :

    • Roast Chicken
    • Roast Turkey (with the extender ring).
    • Roast Lamb
    • Roast Beef
    • Roast Pork (Western and Asian) and achieving restaurant quality crackling.

These will save you time and power by heating up a much smaller volume of air.

The heavy Glass bowl is a pain in the @ss to clean but at least it is non stick.

    A bargain for $20.

bought this Aldi one for $25 April last year, love it, about one year old and still going strong! cooks baked sweet potato to die for! Aldi unit doesn't have the ring extender but don't miss it, used at least 2x per week and as long as you turn pieces over half way it cooks evenly, can cook whole leg/chook but better cut in half, for cleaning, bowl is straight forward, it's the lid with the cooking element that is tricky!

I have one of these new Aldi ones. It is only OK. Won't cook meat very well - but it actually works great for cooking garlic bread, or reheating pizza. That's about all we use it for.

We've tried meat, chips, veges, etc but none of them turn out well in it.

Good price, but I'd recommend saving up for a better one.

  • The heavy Glass bowl is a pain in the @ss to clean but at least it is non stick.

Do these cheaper ones have a 'clean' setting? The Easy Cook does, and cleaning is a breeze - simply tip any racks upside down, pop in a drop of detergent and a cm or two of hot water and set it to clean itself.

It's well worth the extra money, if you can afford it, does a fantastic job, and cooks evenly every time. I can't say I've ever had to turn food.

    • It does but it's useless. I just let it cool down and clean or soak it.

  • Thanks. I've been waiting for the managers special on these. With a little creativity, these make a great component in a home coffee roaster. At this price is worth me grabbing a spare. Only a matter of time before my current one dies as it's getting poet gunked up.

      Please explain?

We have this oven and we used it to cook excellent Chinese Roast Pork (very often). Taste exactly like the ones you buy from the Chinese shops. Recommended.

  • For 5 min of cooking these might be more efficient than a wall oven but for a longer period (once the oven internals are hot) the oven should be more efficient. These things are going to be loosing heaps of heat. Ovens are normally well insulated and double glazed glass.

  • Store manager at Glendale (Newcastle NSW) said NO… i even showed him this Ozbargain page on my phone :-(
He said it was at the managers discretion ….COMPUA SAYS NOO ;-)

  • None at Brunswick VIC.

  • I saw the staff rolling out a pile of 20+ of them today at North Sydney. Price is still $14.99

  • My old Lumina aldi oven broke (Just over one year) and I replaced it with the new $25 pre version. Actually improved the power of this oven this version - good stuff.

  • still 7 boxes @ North Sydney

  • I paid $25 and the whole family is impressed with it. It doubles as a light :) and a is probably cheap even as a salad bowl.

I've tried cooking chicken with it and it turned out great. It really shines as a microwave-replacement, since food still tastes edible and has close to the original texture if reheated just right. A re-heated pizza tasted close to the original and a steak with sauce reheated perfectly as well. I don't know how much power it uses in practice but at least it can be run with the drier on at the same time on a heavily limited electrical circuit (as opposed to the hair drier or kettle).

I guess the main problem is getting the heat low enough and rotating so as not to burn/dry out food surfaces.
