Difference in Surge Protectors

Hi there OzBargainer,

I'm think of getting a few 6 or 8 way surge protectors at home but there seems to be a big difference in price between some of them. I know there are the more expensive and overpriced brands out there like the Monster or Belkin ones etc…. but are they much different to the more cheaper (or unknown) brands like the DSE brand?

I can seem to justify spending that extra for something that'll do the same job as everything else at a lower price.

Cheers for the advice! :)

  • Everything you could ever want to know about surge protectors.

Get a cheap decent one with insurance coverage.

  • All I can say to you in the absence of having the issue in front of me is that Choice mag tested a pile of multi-outlet surge power boards a couple of years ago and found huge differences in performance relative to spec. As regards the outcome, I remember being quite shocked…
I do, however, forget the modestly priced brand and model that was the clear champ. There were a couple of others (much more expensive) that did well in some areas, but not so well in others.
I didn't take notice of specifics as most of my equipment is connected to UPS units with integrated surge protect which specify that you shouldn't connect outboard surge boards.
Anyway, if you're keen, you might find the Choice issue at your local library, or there's always an online sub which will let you archive search.

  • Link to the Choice results page, although it is 4yrs old.

    • +1

Time flies… and didn't realize older 'Choice' summaries popped up gratis.
The Crest recommendation still seems to be rather relevant. Googling 'crest powerboard' brings up the same exact model - not for $43 as it was - but in stock on BigW website for 29!!
      That's what I'd be buying mr_vino89.
