The problem with these online backup services is that most Australians have crap upload speeds.

Using the calculator on their site, I can only upload 16GB a day (using 100% of my upload bandwidth). I'm on 100Mb/s download 2Mb/s upload Telstra "Ultimate" Cable plan.

To upload a single copy of my 5TB backup server would take ~312 days. Which would be 10 months out of date by the time I finished!

BTW If I had a house fire the day after I finished my 10 month upload and had to download everything again, it would take 89 days (for some reason my 100Mb/s connection is rated at 5.37 with them) to download everything again - however my 500GB/month download limit means it would take 10 months worth of allowance!

If you only had to back up a single small SSD, or had an NBN 100/40 connection it might work out for you. For me, it just doesn't add up.

    • You main point was about speed, mine is metered uploads… sigh :(

    • You're right that with these services it takes a long time to upload and a long time to download, but the purpose is backup, and even if it takes a long time, that's better than having no option of getting the data back at all.

Also, it should be noted that you do have the option of having them ship out a HDD with your data, so you don't have to spend a very long time downloading if you don't want to.

The only issue I have with Backblaze is they don't support 'Server' operating systems. I use Windows Server 2003 for my file server and so the client simply won't install. As such I use Crashplan+ (although I hate to recommend them due to them now choosing to charge Australian customers twice as much as everyone else).

  • I use and recommend this site, they're great value and their software is simple but flexible enough to be useful. I admit it took over a year to backup my system initially (personal data, projects, photos etc) but now it's done I never have to think about it again and all new files are put up immediately.

It was around a TB and I did it on a capped upload ADSL connection using their scheduling function, so I only backed up for a few hours at a time overnight, so if you just let it go full throttle it would be faster. I couldn't use it during the day because it would max out my uplink.

What I do recommend though, despite its inconvenience, is turning on their encryption option. I recently restored a bunch of data and chose their HDD shipping option. It only occurred to me half way through the shipping process that it was my personal data in the hands of the ever curious postie ;)

EDIT: Just wanted to add I initially used this site as a third tier of backup and just recently was forced to use it for real after having an intermittent faulty ram stick silently trashing data on my main HDD and finding some covert bad blocks on my USB backup drive. Their restore HDD I ordered was requested on a Saturday and arrived via Fedex on the following Wednesday. You can download your restores for free or choose to pay to buy a USB HDD they post out to you with free international express shipping.

  • How long does it take for the email to be sent? I signed up minutes after this was posted and still nothing?

    • The terms say that it can take up to a year to send the code. That way not everyone jumps in at once and overloads their servers.
