PayPal Now Accepting AMEX

Just tried to add AMEX to my Paypal AU account, and it succeeded.
It also lists AMEX in the drop down box, along with others like MC, VISA etc.

Mine was a CommBank issued AMEX

Edit 01/04/2013: Just been charged 95 cents to the AMEX as part of CC verification for new credit cards

    Something I'm missing?

    • Mines got the same as yours. Visa, Mastercard and Discover but no AMEX???

Created a new account and it has AMEX as an option on the setup

      • +1

I tried again later (on my iPad actually) and it was available.
Added an actual AMEX card and NAB issued AMEX.

  • Thanks! Added mine successfully. There are four options for me: Visa, Master Card, American Express, and Discovery.
Beware of currency conversion fee when using Amex.

    • Did I miss something regarding fee in my haste ?
Is there any fee even for $AU ?

      • No, it's fine for AUD, but sometimes people buy from ebay international or other Non-AU sites.

        • Doesn't PayPal usually do the currency conversion for you (at a poor rate)?

        • +3

You can change that to be charged in the sellers currency to get a better rate with you're card.

        • +4

          I use 28degrees for that !

        • +1

28 degrees doesn't earn you rewards points, unfortunately

    • +1

      use 28 degrees.

  • +1

I might also add that mine was a Commbank issued AMEX.
If users can list what their instituion is, maybe some AMEX cards aren't being accepted

  • It showed up in my Paypal. Used an ANZ issued AMEX and Paypal accepted it.

  • great, will add mine, I am with AMEX commonwealth bank as well, get extra rewards points when I shop with Amex. thanks

    • +2

      Obvious benefit is obvious ;)

  • About time :)

  • +3

    Westpac issued AmEx works.

  • +1

Thanks Op. Directly issued by AmEx Works

  • I'm not seeing the option even come up. Only the regular three (Mastercard, Visa, Discover). Maybe they're gradually rolling the option to add AMEX in across every account.

  • Just added mine (direct issue)

    (thanks geek7899)

    Amex Black card works fine

  • no option on my pc or android phone

    • works now. guess they are rolling out the updates

  • Thanks. Added from my Desktop, ANZ Rewards Amex
So it is safe to assume that there won't be any fee by using Paypal that is linked to Amex Card? Some merchants charge extra fees if using Amex

  • No problems adding my Platinum Edge — sounds good for domestic sites that charge Amex fees, but I think I'll keep using the Bankwest Platinum Mastercard for international transfers.

  • Could someone clarify for me the advantages/disadvantages of using AMEX versus using Paypal (with a AMEX as my primary card)?

If making an international transaction, will I save money on the international transaction fee by using Paypal?
Will I get just as many award points? (I have a commbank AMEX)?
If making a domestic transaction, does it make any difference at all which I use?

    • amex rewards are better than mastercard or visa rewards in terms of per dollar spent

      • Thanks. I'd asked the question in a kinda unclear way. I meant "Will I get as many points using paypal (with AMEX set as my primary card) as I would if I made the same purchase just using AMEX?

        • +1

          yes. same points.

  • thanks.
    very nice info..

  • Thanks, added mine.

  • +3

I would + this post if I could

Just wondered, if the merchant normally charges an Amex fee, and we use Amex through PayPal, do we circumvent the fee? If so, this is the business!

    • Good question. I don't think Paypal discriminates with what card is used.

      From their fees page

      Sell-

Payment Method: entirely or partially funded by debit card or credit card

2.4% + Fixed Fee (see table below)….Australian Dollar: $0.30 AUD

For big sellers it looks like the reduced fees based on sale figures. Also different fees depending on currency. Fortunately no fees depending on which credit card you use…yet.

      • Thanks for that. Yeah, I think it's definitely a 'yet'. Once the card is being used for heaps of $2 eBay purchases, the buck will have to stop somewhere. And for some reason, I just can't see PayPal footing the bill!

        • +1

I don't think it'll be a problem given the example of big retailers like Coles or Woolies.
Neither of those charge customers anything extra to pay by Amex and I'm sure they were able to secure a 'backroom deal' with Amex to not charge their usually higher merchant fees or else….

Amex probably considered whether it would make good business sense to give in to the 'blackmail' by these retail giants and decided that it's worth their while.

Given PayPal puts even these giants to shame as far as the volume of transactions going through them worldwide, I am confident that they have negotiated something similar with Amex.
I see ZERO chance for PayPal agreeing to allow the use of Amex unless Amex gave them what they want from the get go as far as merchant fees.

My bet is that Amex on PayPal is here to stay and would be an excellent option to use Amex where the retailer doesn't process Amex or applies a surcharge and has PayPal as one of the payment options.

It's simple business really….if you are big enough then you ALWAYS get what you want.

  • Strange. I could see AmEx option yesterday but today it disappeared when I wanted to add my AmEx card.

    • Just added mine 5 minutes ago. It works fine

  • I dont have that option as well…

  • Has anyone had experience making an extended warranty claim with Visa/Mastercard/Amex if the payment went through Paypal? Would the claim still be valid? Cheers

    • I think it depends on the T&Cs of the policy that comes with your card.
I'm with NAB and their terms specifically state that in order to be eligible for any of the insurances that are associated with the card, the transaction must be processed by the merchant DIRECTLY.

In general I would say that no, you are not covered.

  • I added successfully. Thanks for the info.

pay telstra bill with paypal using amex card = lololololol no card surcharge!

  • +2

Thanks to this post I realised that I've lost my amex card.

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks OP!

  • Cool thanks OP :)

  • Thanks OP, just changed mine (ANZ by the way)

  • Thanks OP,

Just linked my Amex, now to start paying my Telstra bills using PayPal and avoid those stupid credit card fees while earning points.

  • Awesome! Thanks mate

  • not working for me. Tried the iOS app as well :(

  • Thanks I added my card successfully as well :)

  • I realised another thing:

If you're paying via paypal your telstra bill, your MR points should be 1:1, not 0.5:1.

Can someone confirm this? My Telstra account is a Enterprise one, so I can't use paypal.

    • Does it say anywhere that it will be 0.5:1 ? How did you arrive at this assumption ?

      • Utility payments are only 0.5 afaik.
There is more to that list but I cant access my account atm.
Found it in the T&C but no confirmation if thats what happens when using Paypal/AMEX.
But half a point is better than none.

You will earn 0.5 Membership Rewards point per $1 spend at participating merchants classified as; “utilities” including gas, water and electricity providers; “government” including the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Postal Corporation (Australia Post), federal/state and local government bodies; and “insurance” excluding insurances offered by American Express.

      • I have a Platinum Edge card with the 3-2-1 points scheme.
Telstra and other telcos fall under utilities which only give me 0.5 points for every dollar.
I'm hoping through paypal it only sees it as "retail" and not communications.

        • Please keep us updated :D

  • Holy hell, thanks very much geek7899. Just stumbled onto this before was about to make a reluctant Paypal purchase at expense of my ability to use AMEX. Can now enjoy the best of both and will happily return to using Paypal more frequently.

    • My pleasure :)

  • So has anyone used AMEX as the payment funding option and purchased something from overseas paying in USD?

Just tried it and it charges you as USD so i guess i will be hit with a fee from my bank as if i used the credit card normally paypal does not convert it or actually charge the CC in AUD.

Look at the below item i purchase.. normally you see the AUD rate conversion.

    Total amount:
    $503.81 USD
    Fee amount:
    $0.00 USD
    Net amount:
    $503.81 USD

    Date:
    9 Apr 2013
    Time:
    15:55:19 AEST
    Status:
    Completed

Your transfer from your credit card to your PayPal account is complete.

    Subject:

    Credit Card
    Funding type:
    Credit Card
    Transfer from:
    American Express Credit Card XXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXX
This transaction will appear on your statement as "PAYPAL *PAYPAL".

    • you can change the conversion options and use paypal's USD->AUD rates. i personally don't use paypal's rates because they're rubbish. even with the commission, amex's rates are significantly better

      • didn't see anything about converting..

it didn't give me any options.

  • Just added my replacement card with no issues, not a bank issued card.

  • Happy days
