MEL/SYD to Europe - Circa $1000 Return

910

Following on from JoelT's great post a while back http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87343, I was doing some searching and found a pretty good deal on some flights from MEL/SYD to London/Istanbul.

Like JoelT's post this is somewhat long winded but you will not find a cheaper flight. The first leg from MEL/SYD is on Jetstar and the rest of the legs are on Etihad. I tried a number of dates (outside of July) and they are all within $200 of each other so have a play around with dates. The best I could find was as follows:

Edit: Looks like it works for Brisbane as well

10th May - MEL - SIN Dep 11:00 Arr 16:50
Jetstar - $240 with luggage - http://www.kayak.co.uk/#/flights/MEL-SIN/2013-05-10

6 Hour layover in Singapore (note: you can go the day before and spend a night in Singapore if you wish)

10th May - SIN - LHR (via Abu Dhabi) Dep 20:20 Arr 07:20
24th May - IST - MEL (via Abu Dhabi) Dep 14:25 Arr 18:10
$730 AUD on Etihad - http://www.kayak.co.uk/flights/SIN-LHR/2013-05-10/IST-MEL/20…

Total Cost - Approx $970

The price is about the same if you go SIN - IST/LHR - MEL rather than SIN - LHR then IST - MEL
Also the cost of a flight between LHR and IST is around $180.
Hope that makes some sort of sense and helps a few people out, let me know if you have any questions about it.

  • i might be missing something here. why wouldn't you book the 2 trips together?

    • +2

because flights ex SIN are a lot cheaper than flights ex MEL/SYD, that's why the deal is so cheap

      • +1

Secret's out! This was also the case for flight to Maldives.. $1800 pp from Mel.. but two separate flights/via Singapore.. $1350.

        • PM please to share how you managed to get cheaper Maldives tickets

  • It's also worth looking at KUL as well as SIN as if you can't get a cheap price with Jetstar, you end up with a pretty long layover.

    • Singapore a better regional hub. More flights in/out therefore less layover

  • Are you sure that the return flight to Singapore is $240? Or is that just one-way? It seems extremely cheap if its a return fare. Cheapest return flight to Singapore from Sydney I can find is $423 (http://adioso.com/au/sydney-au-to-singapore-return-between-4…)

    • +1

It's one way - Etihad takes you back to Australia on the SIN - Europe - MEL/SYD leg

  • Booked a similar trip from the same offer but with Scoot 2 months ago for July/August - $1060. Syd - Sin (1 night stay) - Dus and return FOC - Syd. Pretty happy with the Deal, especially as it is during European summer. Btw. Mil was also cheap.

    Brisbane/GC: 561Pound = $817 SIN-LHR LHR-BNE + $199 GC-SIN on Scoot = $1016 (same dates)
(Entering BNE-LHR return on Kayak almost doubles the price to $1734!)
Waiting for AirAsia to fly to Europe again - flew GC-Stansted return for $650 in 2010.

  • Thank you for this. I might be making a trip to Budapest sometime in May. Very inexperience re this flight deals so I tried using the website to search. My plan was to fly to KUL for a spot of shopping and then fly from there. But with this website that you posted, I noticed flying via SIN seems to be cheaper than KUL by at least 300-400 AUD. That's quite a fair bit, even if I am planning to drop by KUL, it might be worthwhile taking a cheap flight to SIN and fly from there. Am I on the right track?

Awesome. The Singapore - Istanbul, then Istanbul to Melbourne for only $730 is fantastic. Especially if you have the time to visit the places you are stopping over. I am planning a 5 week trip to Europe next year, so this will be a route I will consider for sure. Thanks for sharing OP!

    • I found cheap flights from Melbourne to Singapore ($182) for the 26th of may, but I couldn't get a cheap price for Sinapore-Istanbul-Melbourne. I would need to be back in Melbourne around the 22 of July…

What dates did you select to get $730?

      • It doesn't work in July unfortunately, at least not that I've found

  • +2

Checks out, syd -> sing $250, sing - paris, paris to syd = 505 pounds = $750 aud totals about $1000.
The real deal here is that ethiad flights are less than half price. Now if only I had leave :(

    wait im so confused?

  • +13

"deal" like this is really appreciated, far far far better than those "free ios games".

  • -1

i get it now, but i want to go to Manchester if there are possible deals

  • Found this on adioso for perth>singapore>phuket>abu dahbi> dusseldorf> munich $570 http://adioso.com/itinerary/2604503175910921570-PER-SIN-HKT/…
Prob not cheap considering all the layovers. Anyway of searching from cheap flights back from europe to oz? adioso doesn't seem to like searching flights out of europe

edit: nvm adioso lied to me HKT>Munich did not equate to $399

I would not recommend travelling cattle-class with Jetstar, especially on the longer flights. Having done it once (and never again), it was not that dissimilar to travelling on an RAAF Hercules.

    • +5

i flew to honolulu last month on the "cattle-class" with jetstar, didnt have any problem with my own ipad. if you intend to treat urself as a cattle, it is a different story then.

    • +1

totally disagree… several long haul and domestic jetstar flights have been as good as any other major airline in my experience, minus the food, which you can get if you want to pay a small sum anyway.

    • +1

Come on, I doubt you would have to wear earplugs on a Jetstar aircraft and be jolt around as you do on a Hercules..

    • There are other choices on the OZ-SIN route.
But we are talking as cheap as possible here. Put the savings towards the rest of your holiday.
Have flown for many years with Jetstar to Japan - no problems.
Just back from 2 trips to SIN with Scoot (3 flights) & a snug fit into a AirAsia seat back from KL.
Yes, not as comfy as a full service airline, but love the savings.

  • What sort of dates are people getting? Only dates in May?

  • booked already for june from last deal. even cheaper for kids. has anyone tried dec dates? so cheap might even go back!

  • Dec dates look ok also, anyone know when the scoot etc deals come out to get to singapore?

When having a play around with the Etihad deals on kayak and got linked up to lastminute.com and had a read of the fare conditions and found this.

15 SALES RESTRICTIONS - FOOTNOTE RULE
TICKETS MUST BE ISSUED ON/BEFORE 25MAR13.

    FARE RULE
TICKETS MUST BE ISSUED ON THE STOCK OF EY OR HR AND
MAY NOT BE SOLD IN AUSTRALIA.

So figuring not eligible. Is this common to have these kind of restrictions when purchasing airfares overseas.

    • +5

May not be sold in Australia? I think that'd be more of a travel agent restriction, Kayak isn't an Australian agent and there is no way anyone will know where you are booking FROM.

      • I'm no expert but from what I can see the kayak website just gives you the fares from different travel websites and then you are directed to that website for the fare such as lastminute.com. So your really dealing with the website you purchase the airfare from not kayak.

    • yes they are common. How else are they gonna shaft us if they don't use scare tactics?

When people bought the popular Qantas LA tickets from expedia.ie last year they had this warning but they had no problems. You can search that bargain and read the comments.

        Writing my post from Italy

Took the deal from last post

You should consider staying a day in Singapore

        Awesome food, super cheap

Euro also super low right now so everything seems very affordable

      • I had a look through that expedia thread there are almost 300 comments. I did notice a couple of comments about having cheap fares revoked by expedia in this case and the distress and waiting for funds that occurred. I'm no expert. I was just querying what I saw on the lastminute.com website.

    • +1

I contacted lastminute.com and they said I can't buy this fare if I'm in Australia. Its disappointing but I'd rather know than take a chance and have issues with a large sum of money.

      • Just letting you know what happened. Not sure why I'm getting negative votes.

  • +1

When you think about it, the tickets are not actually being sold IN Australia, are they, so no problem, as shaw has pointed out.

    • +7

      It's return.

    • +3

Read the post again, starts and ends in MEL

  • +1

Thank you, this is a great way to fly to europe :)

  • +3

    Good post!
And it's nice to be remembered :)

  • I just booked an Istanbul return using this method for July 2013. Flying out 5th and returning 1 August. Approx $2000 return and flight times were great, approx 26hrs there and 20hrs back. Not as cheap as mentioned above but definitely cheapest option flying in peak season

THANKS TO WEBERKSHIRE AND JOELT WE ARE PACKING OUR BAGS!!!!!

Our family consisting of x2 Adults and x2 Children (under 12's) are flying Melbourne to Dublin return for under $3000.00

I was excited when I read JOELT's post last year regarding the bargain to be had by starting a European journey with Etihad in KL. We decided last week that we would visit family in Ireland in May. On friday night I found flights on kayak.co.uk KL/DUBLIN/ABU DHABI/MELBOURNE FOR $737 AUD (506 pound) and Airasia flights to MELB-KL for $300- - Flying to Dublin for around $1000 is very cheap! Last night I logged on with the visa card to book only to discover that the price had increased to $1125 AUD-(841 pound)(And adding the Singapore leg would make the total $1425) I was SHATTERED!

In despair I logged on to Oz Bargain and thankfully read Weberkshires post - Thankyou… Thankyou… Thankyou….

As suggested I again used Kayak.co.uk and put in dates replacing KL with Singapore and was over the moon when the price showed SINGAPORE/DUBLIN/ABU DHABI/MELBOURNE at just $641-AUD (440 pound)- our children were less. Flights to Singapore from Melbourne with Jetstar are currently $158- and we are planning on having a few days on the way in Langkawi Island (Malaysia) (30aud flight from Singapore) with the money we have saved.

Some people may not like the thought of making their own way to to Singapore but the following price difference makes it all worthwhile for us.

Comparison based on same flights and dates using kayak.co.uk - apart from Melb to Singapore leg where Jetstar is used (22nd May - 8th June)

MELB - DUBLIN RETURN USING ETIHAD ONLY $6728.00 AUD

MELB - DUBLIN RETURN USING JETSTAR/ETIHAD $2886.00 AUD

    A SAVING OF ……. $3842.00 AUD

and our flight times are great with Ethihad - first one is 18 hours (SING/ABU DHABI/DUBLIN) and second is just under 24 (DUBLIN/ABU DHABI/MELBOURNE)

SO ONCE AGAIN A BIG THANKYOU GUYS FOR SHARING!

    • +1

great stuff! glad I could help!

    • +1

How about clicking the + button for the deal?

  • I found a cheap flight to Paris in December, now to find a return flight to Singapore.

I can only go during the school holidays so i'm limited, Currently scoot is $650 return from the Gold Coast for the dates i need, 16th/dec returning January around the 21-24th.

Anyone know if this price will come down in future sales? I'm just not sure if i should book now or wait for a deal as the dates are in school holiday times and the sales are usually not for these dates.

I'm going to head to flight centre in the morning and get them to price match, The price is so cheap i'm thinking of going business class!

Economy is $821 and Business is $1527! Only problem is there is 5 of us so have to times price X 5.

So econonomy is $3530 cheaper than business, It's with SriLanka Airlines, anyone know if the business class is any good on this Airline? Anything else i should know about?

Sorry for all the questions, really keen to go on this holiday…
