Business/Economy Mixed Flights to Europe from Australia 2013 - $1899 ~ $2700

960

It's a bit of a long-winded deal but hear me out.

The wife and I have been searching thoroughly for cheap flights to Europe late next year. Flights departing and returning to Australia are typically the most expensive due to the usual inflation. So if you hop on a cheap flight to Asia and book return tickets from say Singapore or KL to Europe, then you will get better prices. Nothing surprising so far.

STEP 1 (book your budget flight directly with the airlines):
So regardless, cheap flight to Asia from Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Perth, or Darwin can be easily done on AirAsia, Scoot, Jetstar, or Tiger from between $149 - $199 if you time the purchase right. Cebu Pacific are rumoured to be starting cheap Australian flights direct to Manila in Q3 2013, so they may be a fifth option.

  • DEAL 1:
    http://www.kayak.co.uk/flights#/SIN,KUL-LON,PAR,FRA,ROM/2013…
    Singapore > Colombo > London / Frankfurt / Rome / Paris - Business Class
    &
    London / Frankfurt / Rome / Paris > Colombo > Singapore - Business Class

SriLankan Airlines incl. chauffeur service, lie-flat beds (on some planes), and lounge access.
    ~$1753 AUD per person!
The cheapest option appears to be Frankfurt. These are available many dates next year - August is what I've been watching. You'll still need to book a budget flight back to Australia.

  • DEAL 2:
    http://www.kayak.co.uk/flights/MNL-LON/2013-08-01/FCO-SYD/20…
Manila > Abu Dhabi > London / Manchester - Business class
    &
    Rome > Munich / Athens / Berlin / Geneva > Abu Dhabi > Sydney / Melbourne - Business class

Etihad Airways incl. chauffeur service, lie-flat beds, and lounge access.
    ~$2457 AUD per person!
No need to book budget flight home, fly in style the whole way. The reason this is so cheap is because of the Rome departure. Take Rome out of the equation and the fares skyrocket. I bet you can't find a better business class deal on such a good airline (that isn't paid for by your company lol)!

  • DEAL 3:
This is the one we finally selected because of it's excellent pricing. It's a mixed-class, multi-city flight and would need to be booked with a travel agent under a single itinerary (or by phoning the airline directly).
Singapore > Abu Dhabi > London / Manchester - Economy class
    &
    Rome > Munich / Athens / Berlin / Geneva > Abu Dhabi > Sydney / Melbourne - Business class

Etihad Airways incl. chauffeur service, lie-flat beds, and lounge access (on the way home!)
    ~$1850 AUD per person!
No need to book budget flight home, fly in style the whole way.

I'm not a rep. The reason I've chosen Studenflights is, until today, you get the following cashback deals (as a cash passport):
Spend over $1500 - get $50 back
Spend over $2500 - get $100 back
Spend over $3500 - get $200 back

So in essence, deal 3 would come down to around $1750 per person after cashback for two travellers. Score a $149 flight to Asia and you have a return trip to Europe incl. a long-haul business class experience for $1899!!

Edit:

I may as well mention the economy class deal for those interested:
DEAL 4:
http://www.kayak.co.uk/flights/SIN-LON/2013-08-01/FCO-SYD/20…
Singapore > Abu Dhabi > London / Manchester - Economy class
&
Rome > Munich / Athens / Berlin / Geneva > Abu Dhabi > Sydney / Melbourne - Economy class

Etihad Airways
~$920 AUD per person!

  • Fantastic post JoelT!! Great second post!!

  • I am looking for a flight to Europe at the moment … thanks for the detailed post … will have a close look at these options. Last year I paid 1550$ with Qatar to Munich … great deal (incl. taxes). Looks like the prices went up a bit compared to the last years. I like the business option for not much more … (hehe … but not sure about SriLankan Airlines … :-).

    • +1

We flew with SriLankan a few years back on the same route (economy class though) and thought they were quite good. Food and service was above standard. SkyTrax gives them 3-stars and they're set to join oneworld next year.

Got nothing on Etihad though :)

      • :-) As long as the planes are safe I am happy.

As we are travelling with kids I usually opt for the airlines with the least stops and fastest times (Qatar and Etihad are great to Europe). Combining it with a budget trip to asia might be cheaper … but I would love a direct option. :-) But this deal might suited to a lot of people.

I found some flights on kayak.co.uk with Air China for $1550 (mmhhh … Air China … and a funny 39h trip …also not ideal)

        • Flown Air China several times and I have found them to be excellent. Pilots very professional, flight staff on a par with the likes of Thai Airways (and what I remember of Singapore Airlines). If there's a stopover in Taipei all the better (no visa, great city); if Beijing, not so much (cant leave the airport; spent 12hrs there once, got bored pretty quick)

  • +7

Just remember the budget carriers are a point to point service so if they are delayed and you miss your full service flight to Europe, you may be in trouble. Get travel insurance for peace of mind. Small price to pay…

Also factor in the additional time you are going to spend in having multiple carriers.

    • +1

not sure if travel insurance covers all cases like this..

only if you miss your flight due to unforseen weather/political environment etc.. from what ive seen they won't cover any loss due to delays caused by maintenance or repair issues with the plane..

      • Yes, that is correct.

    • All true. The timing of the flight connections usually require spending a night in Asia - which is another cost to factor in. This can be done as cheaply (http://www.sleepinginairports.net/) or as expensively as you like, but still works out much cheaper than a flight originating in Oz.

Singapore is a easy and pleasant stopover I've done several times.

      • +1

If you went with the business option and put 6+ hours between the arrival of your budget flight and the departure of your first business leg that should give you plenty of time to allow for delays and also a chance to relax in the business lounge.

        • +1

I would not even recommend this. If your incoming flight is majorly late, then you risk losing your entire subsequent booking, unless it is a flexible ticket which allows date changes easily. Granted that it is uncommon to be so severe delayed, but anything can happen. Best to at least have an overnight buffer.

Connecting expensive flight to budget flight probably less of an issue, since you can just buy another budget flight if you happen to miss the connection.

  • Thankyou so much, we're looking at flights to Europe for our delayed honeymoon next year and this looks like it will be a lot of help!

    • +1

I don't think your wife will be happy if you book the flights this way ;)

  • Love your thinking!!! Did I miss a url for option 3???
thanks for your research. Love it.

    • +1

      No worries.
Option 3 can only be done through a travel agent because it's a mixed class fare (must be under one itinerary). Unfortunately Kayak, Travelocity, Zuji, Expedia etc. do not let you do this type of search online. I called every agent I could think of: Flightcenter, STA Travel, StudentFlights, HarveyWorld, Jetset etc.. The two cheapest options were to call Etihad directly and StudentFlights. StudentFlights won for me because of the cashback deal that expires today.

The only online site I could find that would quote multi-class flights was a Singapore based one:
      http://www.airfares.com.sg/flights/MultiCitySearch.aspx
Try searching SIN > LON on Aug-1 Economy + FCO > SYD on Aug-21 Business for example.

      Hope that helps!

  • you're a gun!

  • +1

Don't forget to get additional luggage on ur budget flight!
Or you end up in Singapore with luggage costing over 1k to send back to Australia!

  • Amazing post - I'm currently in the process of doing something very similar for Adelaide - Vegas - Cabo (Mexico) - Bali - Adelaide. This info you've posted here has given me a couple of ideas! Cheers heaps!

  • Thanks Joel, how on earth do you work all this out???!!

    • +3

Lots and lots of time on Kayak UK lol!
The UK one tends to have much better deals than the US one - and it can be configured to be the default search on the Kayak Android/iOS app.

There are many great tricks to be had if you play around with multi-city flights. For example, in April this year my brother needed to travel from Sydney > Montreal > Sydney. Air Canada was the most comfortable journey, but they quoted $2100+. By playing with multi-city fares and knowing which airlines codeshare, I got him a flight on Sydney > Montreal > Sydney > Auckland on Air Canada for $1600. He just never showed up for the Auckland flight :)

      • +2

How did he get his checked baggage?

        • It was a three leg booking under one itinerary.
          Leg 1: SYD > YVR > YUL
          Leg 2: YUL > YVR > SYD
Leg 3: SYD > AKL (Air NZ)
It's the airline's obligation to complete each leg, so there was no risk he or his bags would be accidentally transferred to Auckland on the flight home from Canada. Once you don't check-in for a flight (Leg 3 in his case), your entire itinerary gets cancelled, so always book the throwaway fare at the end. Slightly dishonest, yes.. but AirNZ still gets its money and has one less mouth to feed and one less person/bag to transport.

        • there was no risk he or his bags would be accidentally transferred to Auckland on the flight home

You have to make sure you've booked the final SYD-AKL leg with at least an overnight stay in SYD, otherwise baggage for same-day travel will generally be checked through to the final ticketed destination (AKL). Airlines have wised up to "hidden-city ticketing" like this, and are now generally pretty inflexible when it comes to the destination of checked luggage.

Also, hidden-city ticketing will often violate the airline's contract of carriage, which may have repercussions if you're a frequent flyer caught using such booking ploys often. Shouldn't be an issue if you don't fly often, or spread out your use of such ploys on a variety of carriers.

      • Doesn't that cause some immigration issues? Booking an international flight from Canada to NZ, but actually ending up in Aus? Or is it not a problem because he's an Australian citizen?

        • Yep he's Australian. May not have been a good idea if he was on a tourist visa.

          Another quick random example:
If you want to fly Qantas from Sydney to LAX return on Mar-3 to Mar-15
          http://www.kayak.co.uk/#/flights/SYD-LAX/2013-03-04/2013-03-…
Kayak UK quotes $1272 (still not too bad!).

If you book a multi-city flight in 3 legs:
          Leg 1 - SYD > LAX on Mar-3
          Leg 2 - LAX > SYD on Mar-15
+ the random cheapest throwaway fare you can find (in this case Las Vegas to Las Angeles)
          Leg 3 - LAS > LAX on Mar-27
          http://www.kayak.co.uk/flights/SYD-LAX/2013-03-04/LAX-SYD/20…
Kayak UK quotes $1031. A saving of $241!

Play around you might save a few bucks. Dishonest, maybe.. but no consequences. It's even better if you find a use for the "throwaway" fare.

        • +6

You should become an expert on flightfox.com and make some money out of this skill of yours.

        • +1

Why am I only learning of this site now??
I've been doing this for free for friends & family for years LOL

        • Well done for the great detailed review, mate!

Just wondering why I could not find the multi-city flight in 3 legs for $1031? The cheapest I can see is with Delta for $1195

        • Still coming up at that price to me. Not sure why it's not showing for you.

It's coming up as $1050 on the Australian Expedia site - give that go. Multi-city flight SYD > LAX Mar-3. LAX > SYD Mar-15. LAS > LAX Mar-27.

  • +5

The force is strong with this one.

  • +1
    1. Can you book any low-cost carriers through StudentFlights?
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86927

    2. Even if you can boo low-cost carriers through StudentFlights, the connecting flights from SIN are on different airlines. Can StudentFlights book it for you and guarantee the price? According to its T/C, flights originating from outside Australia are not eligible for price beat.

    • +1

Might want to give them a call. I'm sure they'd be able to book Jetstar, but AirAsia or Scoot may be only bookable directly. And while they say they don't price match for os international flights, they may be able to work with you if they know you've been shopping around. Depends on the agent I guess.

  • Is it possible for stopover with no extra charge on returning leg in Munich / Athens / Berlin / Geneva

    Rome > Munich / Athens / Berlin / Geneva > Abu Dhabi > Sydney / Melbourne

Save more money if we can do that.

    • Flightcentre & Studentflights were the only companies that could quote me the Rome to MUC / ATH / BER flight as a separate flight on an earlier date. Even Etihad themselves couldn't provide me with this option. It came out about $120 extra on top of the deal 3 price - so not too bad.

  • Trying to get some flights from Brisbane to Amsterdam next September. Would be happy with Berlin if that is cheaper. Looks like I will have to learn some tricks, and business class does sound nice. Would pay if its an extra $1000, but not double like it normally is.

  • +2

I booked deal 3, but instead of departing from SIN -> AHU, I'm going from SYD -> AHU for an extra $200 on first (Etihad Guest Gold Elite member, but no points were used, this is the raw fare).

Also worth noting, if you guys aren't already an Etihad guest member, you can sign up and earn approx. 30,000 miles on this trip which should land you in silver.

    • Nicely done!
You can also put your points and status credits on your Virgin Australia Velocity card if you already have one.

    • +2

Also if you haven't been on Etihad business, here's a great trip report. Not my most favourite product amongst the airlines, but for this fair, hard to pass!

      http://www.ausbt.com.au/etihad-s-pearl-business-class-abu-dh…

I used http://matrix.itasoftware.com to search multi-city flights when talking to the Etihad rep, makes it easier for both sides.

    • Danblar, any chance of posting your itinerary (obviously after blocking out your personal details)? I'm totally struggling to find the deal you got - want to take it to a travel agent tomorrow, replace SYD with MEL and go to Europe :)

  • +6

Jesus Christ, I bet building the atomic bomb was simpler than this.

  • Hands down to the OP who took his time to put this out carefully and well done.

Great find and research, deserve many upvotes for it :)

Would love to use this for 2014 though, planning Euro trip then, hopefully this thing is still around ;-)

  • Hi JoelIT, just wanted to say that I'm utterly amazed by the prices you've found. I just have one question though - I won't be booking a trip to Europe until early next year, so would you happen to know if these prices are generally the same all year round, or if it's a one off thing? Thanks!

    • Hard to say sorry. There are far fewer business class seats on each plane than economy (between 16 - 22 seats on the Etihad A330s), so they're likely to run out faster. The SriLankan fares were around the $1500 mark a few weeks ago but have since risen. I haven't been watching the Etihad ones very long to notice trends.

  • Upvote for creativity!

OP can you walk me through the Syd - Montreal flights - I can't seem to manage to get close to $1600 through kayak.co.uk

    • That was eight months ago. I did a quick check for next year and lighting doesn't appear to be striking twice for Montreal. Air Canada seems to be getting a little trickier to find. When are you looking at flying?

The general idea is to find the flights you're after and then tack on a disposable flight at the end of your itinerary using multi-city searches. This flight should be the cheapest you can find on a partner airline. Eg. Air Canada is partners with United, so try various United flights. Austin to Houston is a good one.

      • Thanks for the advice mate, I'll have a look around.

  • Upvote from me even though I have no desire to fly to Europe anytime soon. Thanks for describing in such great detail and teaching us the art of throw away multi trips to save money :)

  • Great work JoelT

just in the planning my next trip overseas for April - August..

Earlier this year i went to the USA via the expedia.ie deal posted months ago and worked out to save $500 so will try and save more this time..

I'm wanting to go to the USA in April 2013 till bout July, then head across to Europe for July..
Would you say book a round trip like Melb - LAX - NYC - Europe - melb (everytime i go usa i just book melb-lax return and work out the rest as i go, usually fly southwest)
or book fly out Melb (april) to LAX, then return LAX (august) - Melb with finding my own flights across to europe in between?

    • Try Kayak UK and play around with both ideas. I would guess it would work out cheaper under two itineraries MEL > NYC > MEL and NYC > Europe > NYC. Aer Lingus, Icelandair, Condor, Air Berlin, Air Transat are some of the cheaper transatlantic carriers from memory, but these change. In 2008, we actually found it to be cheaper to take a transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to NY, just an idea ;)

I may take a peek at flights for ya later on.

  • FYI - This stacks with the Tiger airways $9 fares to/from sydney :o (deal 3 or 4)

  • +1

Can you post some cheap business class deals to the US? Going there in January and the cheapest seems to be about $6k with Virgin Australia. Seems a lot compared to the prices you've posted to Europe.

    • Unfortunately Biz class fares are much much harder to come by for trans-Pacific flights from my experiences. My guess is less competition, but there is probably other reasoning. Try searching for flights that depart Australia and return to a third country which is cheap to get to from Australia - or the other way around.

On the budget carriers it's "relatively" cheap to get to: Singapore, Jakarta, Bali, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Phuket, Christchurch, Auckland, Fiji, some Pacific islands sometimes, Tokyo, Osaka, maybe even Taipei or HKG if you have the time. Flights departing India can sometimes be not too bad if you're really willing, but that's a hell of a detour.

Air Pacific business class tends to be one of the cheaper options too - which isn't all that good now, but they are rebranding as Fiji Airways next year with some shiny new A330s and lie-flat beds.

When booking our holiday for next year, it was between Germany and Florida. Germany won hands down because of way more flight options.

  • Hmmm…deal one maybe…

(I'm only looking for my partner and I to get to England to see my family.)

Good post dude. Last time I made this flight, it cost me like $5k return.

  • silly question probably, buy how do you enter multiple airports in the to/ from boxes? I tried adding a bunch more but it didnt add the cities , ie I wanted to see if flying from Hong Kong , jakarta and into amsterdam, dublin, brussels brought up further bargains. Some added others did not
    http://www.kayak.co.uk/flights#/SIN,KUL,HKG,CMB,MNL,cgk-LON,…

Great post by the way Joel

    • Thanks!
I think the limit is 4 airports at a time in each box.

  • Hi joe,

    Fantastic post mate.
Can i ask you to help me with some options for warsaw, poland in july in return for some karma points?i

    • What dates were you looking at, and departing which city?

  • +1

Joel should start a travel agency for OzBargainers.

And btw, thanks for introducing me to this Kayak website. Will prove very useful booking my honeymoon for next year. Sadly the fiance is not keen on Sri Lankan airlines but it looks to be a decent airline!

    • lol thanks! Not a bad idea. I've been introduced to that FlightFox website and have had a few wins, so it's all turned out well :)

SriLankan Airlines isn't too bad actually. Way better than any US airline I've been on (which isn't saying much I suppose). We flew with them from Bangkok to London in 2008 (economy class) - in the midst of the civil war. We had a night stopover in Colombo and the airline set us up with a very nice resort room. The military check points were interesting. Fortunately that's all over now. Business class can't sweeten the deal with the fiance? http://www.eglobaltravelmedia.com.au/airline/new-era-for-sri…

Thanks Joel, we owe you! Have just booked singapore to london; paris to singapore in peak (august) business class yeah for $1700. We'll now wait for the jetstar deals to get us from Melbs to singapore. Thanks for saving on hours of pain and jetlag. Big hugs, and we'll toast you when we're on board drinking our first champagne. Also loving Kayak - what a fab site. B x

    • You're very welcome! :)
We're doing London, Munich, Berlin & Prague around the same time - can't wait!!
      Have a fantastic trip!

  • Hi all,

I am planning a trip to Europe and am keen on option 3. i have tried searching for such a combination online, however was unable to return such prices. Can Joel or Beez Neez provide some guidance on how to pull up the fares listed above.

    Thanks

    • Option 3 needs to be done with a travel agent (FlightCentre, StudentFlights, Harvey World etc.) because you can't buy multi-class fares (economy on the way over, business on the way back) online. Might be worth phoning a few of them in your area and see what they can do for you.

  • Hi Joel,

I know from your post on flights to Europe that your some kind of aviation genius, I'm looking at getting flights from Sydney to sri Lanka in November this year. Any tricks that your can offer? My plan so far is to fly to Singapore on scoot ($200 each way) and jump on a Sri lankan airlines flight to Colombo (400 return).

    Thanks

    • Yep you're on the right track. AirAsia (from Kuala Lumpur) and Tiger Airways (from Singapore) also fly to Colombo and would likely be cheaper if you catch the fares during a sale period.

Can't buy these flights for November yet, but a quick look in August found fares for under $100 each way on Tiger from Singapore to Colombo - so best keep an eye on those sales :)

Alternatively, if you want a bit more comfortable journey, catch a Scoot flight to Singapore and do a multi-city flight from Singapore > Colombo > Sydney. Malaysia Airlines comes out as $782AUD (http://www.kayak.co.uk/flights/SIN-CMB/2013-11-01/CMB-SYD/20…) - pretty good deal for a 5-star airline.

      • Thanks mate, appreciate it!

  • Hi Joel

Can I pick your brain too? Looking at Perth to London in early July, London to NY on July 18 and return from US (probably LA) in early August. I have been having a bit of a play around and cheapest I can find is around $3500 which doesn't seem cheap at all…dont spose you can point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

    • I'll have a quick look for you when I get some time. One-way around the worlds can sometimes just be cheaper buying a round the world ticket - but I'll check.

  • hi joel, i need to get to ling in mid june for a wedding and basically just looking for the cheapest fair possible. dont mind stopovers. what should i be searching? thanks

  • Done! Thank u so much! Got sin - Lon and Paris - Abu dhabi - Brisbane for gbp 479!! Add a $199 one way GC to sin with scoot.

<$1k wow! Got it for early June. Best deal ever!

    • Wow great deal. Do you mind telling us the dates? Also did you use kayak?

    • which airline?

  • Cheers OP. Just got HKG - LHR, FCO - AUH, AUH - SYD business class on Etihad for $2700 per person with a price beat at Flight Centre. The lady there even commented on how good a deal it was.

Tried booking to a point beyond Sydney on the way back for a hidden city discount, but couldn't come up with any routes that would lower the price more than what it already was.

    • Wow great deal. Do you mind telling us the dates? Also did you use kayak?

      • Yes, I used Kayak to get the quote, then showed them the price at Flight Centre.

        Dates I used are 1/4/13 HKG - LHR, 11/4/13 AUH - FCO and 14/4/13 AUH - SYD.

  • Trying to get good flights for my sister going to Milan, leaving Perth around June 1, returning around June 24. Struggling!

  • +1

just go straight to expedia.co.uk . multi destination, specify etihad timo filter search and type in sin to london and lon to australian city. we are stopping in dubai on the way back so i did paris to abu dhabi and abu dhabi to brisbane. even cheaper for child. a family of 4 would be approx $3k. that cant even get you 1 adult and 1 child on emirates… there are a few stops but its no different to flying emirates.. have to go via sin and dubai anyway. 3/6 sin - lon and 22/6 paris to abu dhabi 24/6 abu dhabi to bris.

  • Hi Joel, massive thanks for all your help with Kayak.

I am wondering, has anyone found a good transpacific business class fair? from Sydney to LA, San Diego or San Francisco? or any flight sectors that may be a bargain?
