Universal Phone Cradle & Car Charger Kit $9 Delivered from Kogan

880

Saw an ad in today's Herald Sun for Kogan, advertising a Universal Phone Cradle & Car Charger for only $9 delivered. This was listed here about a month ago for $19. It seems like a reasonable deal for both a cradle and a charger, although both can be had separately for less money on eBay.

The pack includes:
Smartphone car holder (Min/Max Width: 40/120mm)
USB AC/DC Car Charger
Micro-USB Sync Cable
iPhone 30-pin Cable (Not Lightning cable)

Note that there is a limit of one per customer.

  • Anyone got one of these? Wouldn't mind getting one for my iPhone 4 & 5 if its decent (aware lightning cable not included)

    • I Have one of these, the are pretty cheap n nasty but it has lasted more than 2 years. It is big enough to hold a SGS3 and a ip4.

    $6.45
Same one it appears, doesn't come with a charger for those who already have.

Actually the cradle from kogan is windscreen mountable (which is more expensive only by $1.xx)
so overall if you need a charger and cradle (shipped from AU) and with tax invoice, it's good deal
(saving you having to purchase from different sellers/time…)

Plus Kogan comes with 12 months warranty!

      • I paid with platinum credit card so I get another 12 months warranty. Yeah Buddy!!!

    • Input: 12V .

      Output: 5V / 500~700mA .

The one from Kogan is 2A out. I find my current 700mA charger pretty much only keeps my N4 from draining with GPS, BT and screen on while driving.

Just bought one. Should gonna ditch the TomTom and try using just google maps on my Nexus4. Thanks op

  • i bought one before, works very good.

    • What's the output of the car charger? Wanting to buy one but wasn't sure about the charger

      • +1

        Specs say it's a 2A charger

    Great deal. Nice work 'ieatcrackers'.

  • Thanks OP. Bought one, hopefully the cradle holds my phone securely.

  • I should get one after the new rules about mobile phone usage while driving..
Currently using a mobile phone holder that fits in the cup holder but guess thats also not allowed..
Any better looking ones out there.. This ones ugly..

    • Yes, that is one huge ugly phone holder. But price is good considering the bundled 2A power adaptor for those who only care about its function.

Yes, there are plenty of better looking ones out there. I use a Kidigi desktop cradle securely attached (with double sided tape) to a small tray on the center of my dash , routed the power cable through a small gap in the tray hidden behind the cradle. It blends in nicely with the dash. Looks neat and doesn't obstruct my view like those windscreen mounted holders.

    sold out grrrrrr

    • +1

It's not showing sold out for me at the moment - maybe more stock was added! :)

      • Yea, it was sold out before but it's back in stock now. Bought one

    • Actually, its kinda sold out at the moment, dont worry it says "check back soon" :)

  • andddddddddddddddd its gone.

  • Keep in mind you need to do some jumpering/soldering to get a meaningful current out of these chargers. Otherwise in most cases the GPS would drain the battery faster than the phone can charge.

    • Really? Didn't think that would be an issue. Interesting and annoying. Thanks for the heads up

    • Could you provide an example of a gps device that would drain more than 10W that's powered over usb? I've yet to see one

      • +1

That's because when the phone is in USB charging mode it will only charge at 500mA. You need 1A to get a decent charge for navigation purposes and the only way to achieve that is to either short out the 'data pins' or get a proper charge cable.

        edit: Beaten by opt :)

      • +1

Phones are designed not to draw more than 500mA of current except from a dedicated charger. Dedicated high powered chargers (i.e: wall and car chargers capable of outputting more than 500mA) have their data pins shorted (the two middle pins of the USB port), this is how phones sense a dedicated charger. Some car chargers (but not all) don't come with center pins shorted, I know this because my Belkin 1A car charger didn't, so I had to manually short them to draw 1A. Before the mod my phone detected the connection as a PC USB port, therefore charged very slowly and it wasn't enough to work the GPS or even keep the screen turned ON during a call.

I don't know about the ones sold by Kogan, but I'm assuming that is what gimme meant.

  • Thanks, bought one. My car has bluetooth in-built, but gf's car doesn't. She shouldn't complain anymore.

    • +1

Yeah but now she can call you and tell you all about her day in great detail while she is driving.

      • and causing danger to other road users…….also time consuming to you thanks to this product!!

  • Now to find a decent car bluetooth system for a good price.

  • Thanks, bought one.

  • good deal. bought one

  • Thanks OP, I just got one!

  • Thanks OP, got one! [edit: found estimated delivery time, 3-5 business days after dispatch]

  • This or GripGo?

    • That little green GripGo is super sticky to remove your device, isn't it.

  • Is it suitable for iphone 5 considering the audio port is at the bottom. Kogan doesn't state compatibility with iphone 5…..is that a catch!!

    • Kogan doesn't state compatibility with the iPhone 5 because the iPhone 5 requires a lightning connector, and the deal only comes with a 30 pin connector.
If you have your own iPhone 5 lightning cable, you should be fine with this mount/usb charger.

      • As Adamiam pointed out it will work with an iPhone 5 with a lightning cable, but why do you want to risk using a crappy $5 power adapter with your $800 phone?? Why people spend so much buying expensive phones then cheap out buying critical accessories like power adapters and risk damaging their phones is beyond me.

        • thanks for the replies
am concerned about the cradle, not the adapter (i won't be using this adapter)….cradle has bottom supporting bars which i assume would cover the 3.5mm audio port at bottom of the phone, restricting connection of the phone to my car's aux. for music and calls.

        • Not sure about this one specifically, but other car mounts I've seen are able to be rotated so perhaps you could dock your phone the other way so your audio jack is sticking out the top, then just rotate the mount accordingly.

    Thanks OP

  • Still in stock. Just purchased one for me and for the wife.

    • Yes, just checked, in stock now.

  • 25 dollars???

    • obv deal is expired :/

  • Checked when I got home last night and it was sold out, but as soon as the price went back up it is back in stock, hmmm.

  • Just received mine in the post today. It looks pretty decent, exactly like the photo on the box. Will try using it today on way back from work. I've heard horror stories of smart phones being ruined by 3rd party chargers. I am hesitant to use the 2A car charger on my Nexus 4 at the moment. Should I be wary?

    • +1

Looks like it should be fine if you believe what is written here in the android forums…

Thank for the link, ironbuns. Used it in my car on way back from work with Nexus 4, and it works great. Feels pretty solid, and doesn't vibrate much when going over bumpy roads or train tracks. Have yet to use the car charger.

  • Got mine today, it has lightning cable in it as well

    • +1

Really? Mine came with the old apple adaptor for an iPhone 4/s
