The 3rd gens do have retina. They just have a slower processor etc.

True, but in this case the difference between generations is pretty small. Unless you play a lot of intensive games / hd video etc I'd pick the older one
The A6x (which is what's in the 4th gen) is over double the performance. Not many apps can take advantage of that performance currently, but in a few months time that will change.
You also get LTE that works here in Aus.
Edit: sorry I thought Apple were selling the 3rd gen iPad for $429. In fact they are charging $429 for the second gen iPad. So sorry OP this is a great price.
While I agree the price is good. Its still an OLD model. Sure the difference might not be much but the processor on the 4th gen is much much more powerful than the 3rd gen.
Also please realise if your picking a cellular model that 3rd gen 4G do not work in australia. 4th gen work ok

For $110 cheaper then the 4th gen, I'd go the 3rd. Very nominal increase from 3rd to 4th. I have the 3rd and my sis has the 4th. I cant tell the diff.

12w with the 4th gen vs 10w with the 3rd gen, makes a noticeable difference when charging.
They look the same sure. But the CPU is a lot more powerful in 4th Gen. If you buying it for looks to be trendy sure get this. You want something powerful? - get the 4th gen.
I will admit my iPhone 5 charges insanely fast compared to my old one. But that's pretty much the only benefit of the lightening port I can see so far.

fair enough, i looked on the dse website and only saw it in stock in 2 stores in like all of south east qld, so looks like it's hard to find
Definitely a specific store/manager sanctioned price(s). My store has a few 3rd gens left over but not marked down (at least yet).

Good price for this 3rd gen ipad.
Went to the Bourke Street Store in Melbourne CBD and they are not offering any discounts on the 3rd Gen stock they have. The guys at the store mentioned, its only limited to the store where the deal was posted. Probably many fellow OZbargainers went over there before me :)

Those starting prices are overinflated to begin with. You can get the iPad with retina display 16gb wifi for $498. I thought is was about normal pricing for older models to be around $100 cheaper than the current models.
