  • Anything on the Nikon front. Just looking to progress past my kit lens, onto a prime, prob either the 35 or 50. Would like something with af though (d5100 so no in body)

  • Anyone reckon the 6D + 24-105 would be a good travel kit? Or should I go for another lens? Any recommendations?

    • I reckon this would be the perfect travel lens for this body. Check out this thread for some interesting discussion and sample pics. I'm hanging out to get my hands on this combo…

      • I have the 24-70 F2.8 Nikkor version. It is roughly the same size as the Canon 24-70. I don't consider it a travel lens. It is too heavy and limited focal range limits it from being a good travel lens.

        • 24-105 is significantly lighter and it doesn't have the weight issue of the 24-70. Pretty comfortable for a travel lens unless you want a wider lens (17-40?)

        • Significantly lighter sounds good. But l also want a wider lens too.. Ah the dilemma!

Thanks for all your help nonetheless! :)

      • The 24-105 f4 is a quality L lens, second in quality behind the 24-70 2.8. For travelling I would go with a cheaper and bigger zoom unless you are a perfectionist. NOTE: I don't think EF-S lenses (like the 18-200) are compatible with the 6D. Most reviews say the 6D is better than the 5D Mk 2. See bob atkins, dpreview etc.

    • Yes, that would be a good travel combo. I'm personally using the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC lens as my travel lens, and would recommend it (inbox me if you want further deets). It'll set you back about 1.1k AUS stock in addition to the 6D.
As mentioned, I do at times wish that the tamron 24-70 had a longer reach, but I've learnt to live with it. I should also mention that I also bring my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens with me whilst I travel.

I've got a friend who uses about 3 primes as his travel lenses (24L,50L,85L), so some people are just different.

  • I travel with the 24-70 f/2.8 L and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L

Both are heavy lenses but I feel they give me good coverage for anything from landscapes to portraits and wildlife. I wouldn't mind adding the 85mm f/1.2 prime as my next lens.

  • Any decent prices on 4/3 cameras?

  • Some good prices, but the 10-22mm price is average. You can get non-grey 10-22 cheaper elsewhere ($820 cheapest I've seen). Though I just bought the Tokina 11-16mm elsewhere though so don't need it.
