      "dupe…?"

No, not really. That was over 3 months ago and according to the original post, the max file size limit was only 100Mb (now 250Mb).

"Looks like the 25 GB is permanent. However, it is limited to the 100 MB file size."

      • Interesting. I signed up to a previous 25GB deal, presumably the one you're talking about and just checked, I have the 250MB file size limit not 100MB.

  • -4

Folks on free plans don't get Windows desktop integration.

    • Do you mean as desktop folder to sync files? Cause I have that.

  • +2

Just to mention - Box as a service itself is pretty good.

I managed to grab the 50gb free when they had the android promotion, I mount it on my linux NAS which does incremental backups nightly of around 45gb of photo's.

    Works a treat.

    • I am using the same way. I do not have a lot to backup so I actually have space to make full backup 1 time a week, keep it for 4 weeks, full backup 1 time a month, keep it for 6 months. Incremental backups everyday.

    • thanks. are there any instructions for mounting the box drive?

      • +2

        Yes indeed there are instructions.

Try this link below :) (Based on Ubuntu)

        http://maketecheasier.com/auto-mount-box-net-to-linux-deskto…

        • Thanks. That suddenly makes my 50GB Box.com account a lot more useful :)

        • .

        • grrrr. works from home computer. can't get it to work on an openvz vps.

i wonder if you could set up a encfs folder on top of the box mount to automatically encrypt files on the client side before uploading.

        • Problem with OpenVZ is that /dev/fuse might not have been enabled by the provider, as davfs2 uses fuse. Ask your provider to have that enabled, or change to Xen/VMWare/KVM based VPS.

        • yeah, i've encountered lots of limitations with openvz since moving from a kvm vps, especially with iptables :(

    • It's also possible to setup a network drive to your box account on Windows. I use it in the same way to backup about 45GB of photos and music. However it's been unreliable recently (randomly disconnects or has problems with files).

I have 50GB free on Box from some promo in the past.
I never really use it as I found it too limiting in its integration and back up style.
Dropbox is far easy to use, but yes can’t get that much free space.
I tried to back up my Macs iPhoto library to Box, and it completely screwed it up. It made a complete mess of the filing system.
Dropbox, Google Drive, Skymesh and PogoPlug all copied the iPhoto library structure as is.
You can never have too much free space, so its still a good deal, but Box just isn’t that great.

    • do you have any 50GB invites? Would love to backup my ever growing collection of ebooks :P

      cheers

      • I have one. Feel free to pm me your email address. Possibly might have to be a work or uni address, can't remember.

  • does it work with linux?

    • +7

Look at Shizmo's post 14cm above yours.

      • +3

        +1 for including measurement reference!

        • More like 23.5cm now -_-

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

        • +3

Huh!? iirc Ferengi Rules of Acquisition #208 states: " Give someone a fish, you feed him for one day. Teach him how to fish, and you lose a steady customer"

        • Inspiring

          1. I am not into having my ears rubbed.
          2. There are some customers you want to lose.
        • I belive its more like:

          Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day…

Teach a man to fish, and he'll sit on a boat and drink beer all day.

      • I'm viewing this zoomed in and your post wasn't relevant to me, I got confused and concerned when the post was not in fact 14cm above mattgals. I actually cried. I feel like you owe me a public apology.

        • I feel I have let everyone down; making a post knowing full well that there was a variable that I could not adjust for at a later date.
So myopic, I am more than sorry, I am ashamed.

If anyone wants 50GB storage and hasn't signed up yet, I can send them an invitation which gets them 50GB. Just drop me a PM.

For transparency I don't know if this is a referral (eg. if Box gives me anything for inviting)

    • Normally they reward those who bring them more customers.

    • I would PM you, but I think you've got the feature turned off (at least I can't access it).

    • I'll take it thanks (it won't allow me to PM you)

EDIT: Oh beaten…only if Mitchh doesn't want it…or if you have 2 invites!

      • +1

@rberry I do want it, so hopefully he's got 3 invites, so me, you and Click_It can get 50GB :)

    • I'd love it, assuming you have 3 invites seeing as 2 others have beaten me :)

I can't PM you either, you'll need to enable it.

    • please send me an invitation,

      thanks heaps

    • could I have the invitation , vote + for you
      Thanks - louis -

      • Your 5th in line louis, so hopefully there are a few people with more than one invitation so we can all get some. I'm assuming invitations can only be used by one person?

        • Good point, is there anyone other than parker2004au who happens to have any 50GB invites spare? Just in case it's a one-invite-per-user limitation, we should have a contingency plan in place :)

        • My apologies to all of you, I jumped the gun on posting, and it only allows me to send invitations to people who have the same Email domain as me.

          Sorry.

    • If you're able, I'd like an invite too! Thanks.

    • Yep, I like to get this.. but don't know how to PM. Appreciate if you can help with this…

      • Click on someone's name and if you see "Start a Conversation" then you can PM them. Incidentally, yours is also switched off.

        To enable:
Go to "Settings" and ensure "Allow Private Messages" is checked.

    • I'd like one as well please.

  • I thought box has always offered 25GB for new accounts. How is this a bargain now?

    • that's what i was thinking as well

    • as jdr said above

"Looks like the 25 GB is permanent. However, it is limited to the 100 MB file size." <— where as this deal supports 250MB files apparently. I don't know, I have 25GB + 250MB already so I'm not sure if I'm just lucky or what.

  • If anyone else has an invite for 50gb, please PM me and comment below :)

    • hey i couldnt PM you

      • if you've got more than one invitation, could you PM me? You should be able to do it to me.

      • Whoops, just fixed that setting. If you still have one let me know!

        • thanks, just pm you

        • If you still have a spare(s) please PM me too. Although to be fair you should try Mitchh and rberry first as they, followed by myself, were first in line with the original offer made by Parker2004AU ;)

        • I think he only had one, but thats allright, we'll see how many, if any, invitations Parker2004AU has. Hopefully someone else has some.

Just realised I've got Box from ages ago, I got so hopeful that I'd already have 50GB and some invites, but turns out I've only got 5GB of space :(

        • I created a few (one for myself and each family member) when the original 25GB deal came out months ago so I'm not short of storage availability, however what I really need is one central place to put my work training videos up and they currently exceed 35GB, it's messy separating them so I'd love to place them all on a single cloud.

Failing that I'll just have to try Mega. Unfortunately Mega has been problematic for me uploading massive content (randomly crashes without any clean resume options available), where as Box just works.

EDIT: I know, I should PAY for an account somewhere but this is OzBargain ;)
EDIT2: And I don't think most of us are going to get the 50GB invites. Hopefully whoever has them will help out those who got in first rather than at random but that's for them to decide.

        • Well, I've got 7GB on SkyDrive, 5GB on Box, 5GB on Google Drive, about 2GB on Dropbox… And unlimited space for photos on PicasaWeb. So thats quite a lot as well, but its not very convenient to have everything in different places (except for backups). I would have everything on SkyDrive by now, but I missed the announcements for grandfathering.

        • I am probably going to end up purchasing 100GB Google Drive as it syncs and does pretty much everything I need but the 6GB is terribly insufficient. Box is great and I'd even consider upgrading to a paid account on it someday but it essentially costs more and offers less than GDrive so there's no reason (for me atleast) to ever purchase an account from Box.

I have a Dropbox 50GB (Samsung Android offer) but I never use it, I don't like the fact that in about 20 months it will 'drop' back to 2GB.

GDrive and Box are my picks. Mega has potential to be in the mix when they iron out the bugs and support it with apps but I'd never rely on it soley just due to Mr DotCom's track record.

        • I haven't really used GoogleDrive (apart from testing), because I don't like the way Google treats peoples private information. Then again I use PicasaWeb for photos (due to the great features, such as tagging and unlimited space). Actually, I hardly trust any cloud service with my data, be it MegaUpload, DropBox, or Skydrive. Suppose you could zip the documents into a password protected archive before upload.

        • Actually that's a good point made about GDrive, that's my only real concern with them. From that perspective Box may be better (unsure of their privacy policies). I don't know, if we knitpick too much it's easy to lose faith in all of them. I figure something is better than nothing as far as content backup is concern, I too have some issues with the Cloud as a whole.

        • I don't really trust anyone, even if a company's intentions are good, there are always hackers, and accidental leaks, so it probably doesn't really matter that much who you choose. Although there are some companies I'm almost certain will go through your files. Anyway, I just looked around, and BoxCryptor sounds like a pretty good application, and seems to work with a few cloud services, I'll soon see if it works with Box.

        • I'll check it out thanks.

  • Just signed up.. I got 25Gb.. its cool

    • +2

If you didn't follow the link, the problem is with you not the bargain. This bargain certainly doesn't need a neg.

    • can't you just sign up again with another email address?

  • Thankyou kind sir.

63 gb of dropbox and 25gb of box…. I'm all boxed out now.

    • Wow, how did you manage 63Gb on dropbox? Did you mean 6.3?

      • you can buy extra storage from fivrr, i got 18GB extra for $5…

      • Nope 63 gb sixty three.
Promotion through Samsung and other promotions.

  • If anyone else has a 50Gb invite, I'd sure like one :)

  • Thanks for this maxpowers!

  • I would love a 50GB invite too if someone has a spare. PM me! Thanks.

  • I would also like a 50gb invite if anyone else has a spare. PM me! cheers in advance

  • If someone has a spare 50GB invite please PM. Thanks

  • LOL, the 50GB request almost needs to be a forum thread now. More interest in that than the original deal. Not to detract from the OP's efforts; a fine share thanks buddy :)

    • +1

It definitely needs its own forum thread. The OP did a good thing with this, 25GB is already quite a lot.

  • I'd like a 50gb invite and my username is way cooler than those other guys' :)

  • I would like to have an invitation for 50GB too, if anyone thanks :)

  • +2

I will only accept an invite for at least 100GB. Any less, don't waste my time.

(j/k! Thought I should make an impression on my first post on ozbargain)

  • hmm thanks

  • I just signed up for another 5 of these accounts (+6 from previous Ozbargain post) , My girlfriend uses one, my nephew another.

Bit of overkill but can never have enough cloud storage imo.

I also have 2 dropbox accounts totally 68Gb, which I use constantly. I prefer dropbox's mobile apps and website.

I just have to set a reminder to login to each account every 120 days otherwise Box can terminate the account for inactivity.

I can definitely see this being a problem, if they are strict on this policy because sooner or later I will forget haha

    • Wow, didn't know about the 120 day clause. Thanks for sharing. I set up a few accounts also, though only one of these is in use.

      • in the T&Cs

In addition to other termination provisions, if your account it not currently subject to a paid subscription plan with us, we at our discretion may terminate your account if: (a) you do not engage in any activity in your account within thirty (30) days after becoming a Registered User, or (b) you do not engage in any activity in your account for any period of one-hundred and twenty (120) consecutive days. In the event of such termination, any Content you may have stored will be lost.

        • Well that sucks… But good to know. Need some sort of syncing to prevent this ever happening, hmmmm…

  • Well I will be using drop box and box to backup my mobile. Mainly pics and video. Now I have to get going and start backing up.

  • Thanks for that, great deal. I've been using Drop-box, but I don't dig paying $110/year.

  • Sweet, thanks.
Best thing I got out of this was learning about CarotDav in the apps section….
    http://rei.to/carotdav_en.html
…if you're on windows this thing is great. Allows uploading/downloading from online services with some nice features.

  • Any 50GB invites left? :S

  • Can anyone send me an 50gb invite? thanks

  • mega.co.nz 50gb free with encryption. mobile app soon.

  • Hi, I'd like a 50gb invite as well, if anyone is willing to send me an invite :)

  • waiting for 50GB invitation, anyone please, thanks a lot.

  • Please use this thread in the forum to request the 50GB invite (if that actually exists). Leave this deal posting for the current 25GB offer.

    • It should exist, but whether or not anyone still has a free invite is another question.

      • You didn't have any luck either huh? It was a noble effort on both our parts. I'm standing down :)

        • Nope, but at least I got 25GB, which at my upload speeds is heaps. Although eventually it will fill up, and then when it does…

  • This seems like a decent service and I have signed up - I want to back up all my family photos stored on a hard drive, to the cloud. Box.com seems like the answer.
But damn I have 18gb of photos. That's a LOT of uploading time and a good 1/4 of my monthly limit. Hmm!

    • you get charged for uploads?
