Thanks but not really a bargain.

    • +1

Just bought one, $50 computer that fits into my trouser pocket is a 'bargain' for me.

    • Not a valid reason for a neg.

      • +2

I would have thought "Not a bargain" would be the epitome of a reason to neg.

        • -1

          epitome of a reason

maybe if you stopped wasting so much brain power trying to use such big fancy words you would understand better.

to be a valid "not a bargain" neg vote i think you will find that you need to show somewhere you can get the same item cheaper than this "deal"

        • technically you wouldn't have to find somewhere it is cheaper just prove that it's the same price everywhere else.

        • prove that it's the same price everywhere else

ok ill give you that, but none of the neggers seem to have posted where you can get the RPi AND case for the same/cheaper from what ive seen.

but just saying "not a bargain" is still no reason to neg without other supporting validateable info imo, and its certainly no "epitome of a reason"

  • +1

You can get it cheaper here - http://raspberrypi.rsdelivers.com/default.aspx?cl=1

Works out about 39-40 bucks shipped from the UK.

But again its standard pricing not "bargain". This whole discussion should be in the forums not on the front page.

    • +2

No, it's £30.54 (AU$46) shipped from the UK for a Model B, including a case, including the removal of VAT, from RS-Components UK…and it doesn't even dispatch for 2 weeks.

Versus AU$45.04 to get it next day from Element14 Australia.

Either you looked at the Model A, or you didn't add a case.

The number of people recommending cheaper websites (that aren't) or mythical Android boxes and sticks (that don't support XBMC/hw-accelerated 1080p) is mind blowing.

  • Purchased one on Monday from Element14 for around $55 (including postage), and received it the next business day. They had 600+ in stock in Australia at the time. If you don't mind paying a few dollars more to receive it as quick as the next day, then I recommend using them.

  • I have two of these. One I got from element14 ages ago for less than this price.
The other I got from RS from the UK for way cheaper 6 months ago.
    Not a bargain, sorry.

  • +1

    This is ozbargain not ozRRP
    Fail

  • I'm waiting for an A15 based RPi. Not really a bargain considering you can get an ARM based Android phone with WiFi, BT, touch screen, for < $100.

  • Just ordered one to play around/test as a replacement for my very old WDTV Live.

Where's the best place to start reading guides? Do you just install XBMC as an OC to a SD card?

    • +2

Typically you install a custom Linux distribution with XBMC all set up. Your three choices are OpenELEC, Xbian, and Raspbmc and I'd recommend them in that order, although they're all pretty similar.

Xbian and Raspbmc are quite easy to install and set up.

OpenELEC is harder to install because the official installer is Linux only, but you can find unofficial images at sites like openelec.thestateofme.com that you can write in Windows/Mac OS.

    • Do you just install XBMC as an OC to a SD card?

i just downloaded the .img from http://www.raspbmc.com/download/ , used Win32DiskImager with instructions here http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup caus my main pc is win7.

and anything i get stuck with just google and someone somewhere has already done everything ive ever wanted to know so far.

RPi's run linux and linux is linux no matter what flavour (version) you run generally things that work in say ubuntu will still be relevant to the RPi.

      • providing its written for arm

        • providing its written for arm

well im only a *nix/RPi noob. only been using either for a few months now but i have taken things specifically not written for arm and recompiled them to use on the RPi. main one being the software for a USB thermometer (temper 2 USB stick) im using with cacti/RRD graphing. none of that was specifically ARM stuff or even intended with arm in mind. its simply linux stuff.

but in my previous comment above i was more talking about just general use of a RPi and its software/commands. i also did say "relevant to the RPi" not always identical. but so far with a little help from a couple of linux mates getting me started ive had no real issues that google has not been able to help me with by just searching the linux/ubuntu forums etc.

  • +2

How is this a bargain? They've been available at this price for ages.
And, to be honest, they are only fun to play with if you like messing around with tech.. otherwise they are really slow and kind of annoying to use. There are better options if you want to just have something to run xbmc on!

    • Name a better $50 device that runs XBMC.

And by runs I mean plays back hardware accelerated 1080p video inside XBMC, because the MK802/MK808 doesn't. And a Pivos is $140.

      • +1

How about the same "$50" device you can get other places for 40?
Its not cheap compared to other sites, and its not a "bargain"

        • +3

Did you not notice this one comes with a $9 case and free shipping?

Find me a brand new 512MB Raspberry Pi, plus a case, for au$50 shipped.

Considering RS-Components and Element14/Farnell are the sole manufacturer-distributors, sell them for roughly the same price all over the world (au$36 ex.GST here in Aus/235 yuan in China/25 GBP) and don't offer volume discounts…

This is OzBargain, put your money where your mouth is and post a better deal.

      • Early Eeepc sell for 50-90 posted on ebay, most will play hardware accelerated 1080p :p Plus get a screen and a keyboard, heck they have 4-8GB SSD!

        • +2

eeePCs consume much more than 4 watts and many of them don't have HDMI (instead they have VGA) though.

        • 4-8GB SSD!

Lol, I had one of those eeePC's with an SSD, they're seriously the slowest things you could imagine. they're slower than a 5400rpm HDD

  • +1

    I want one! I don't know why I want one, but I want one…

    :)

PS: ANy thoughts on using this as a mythtv frontend?

  • Does this version have fuses on the USB port power?
The original ones did, but later models did not, and I killed mine with a faulty USB hub.

  • Can anyone confirm they do DTSHDMA and DolbyTrueHD bitstream to receivers?
Also, people discussing lower prices, are these prices in AU? or say USA and delivered? I couldn't really find any better prices in AU.

    • +1

Sadly no, they can't do DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD bitstreaming, at least not yet. Right now it'll only bitstream the core/lossy DTS or Dolby track.

It's capable but according to Dom @ RPi, they can't really afford to hire someone to do it and there hasn't been much demand (most DTS queries are around GPU decoding rather than bitstreaming.) The last official word was that Dom was tinkering with the firmware last year to try and enable it.
      http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=16821

DTS Inc. are in contact with the RPi team, so we may see some news regarding this soon.

On the subject of prices, Element14/Farnell and RS-Components are the sole manufacturers, the sole distributors, operate globally, and essentially have price parity globally & between each other. Yes we have to pay GST on our units, but international shipping is going to cost more than that.

      • Thanks for the reply.
Yeah I'll give it a miss seeing I have a WDTV Live which from a media standpoint can do everything this can do, and only cost me $80 18 months ago. The only thing I miss from it is being able to stream DTSHDMA, the WDTV does DolbyTrueHD.
I have helped many friends set up media pcs with the intel chipsets that support DTSHDMA and TrueHD, and are easily set up with XBMC, with a few settings enabled within the app to support it.
But good luck to anyone that gets one of these, I'm sure they will be great if you have no media capabilities at the moment. And lets see if someone manages to get DTSHDMA working!

  • Hmm, this looks interesting, I've been looking for a simple XBMC for my wife to use so I don;t have to lug my laptop to the TV all the time. Newb question, can I make this load straight into XBMC if the power is interrupted and is there a way to control this with a Logitech programable remote?

    • yup xbmc/raspbmc boots straight into the normal xbmc menus etc. no need to do anything to special.

they dont have infrared so you cant just point an old remote at it to use it but some TV's will pass the remotes signal to the RPi over HDMI in which case it will work. you can also get a flymouse (keyboard and mouse thats the size of a standard tv remote) for $20-30 which is what i use for my htpc anyway. theres also android and id imagine idevice apps to control xbmc with your fone etc which work awesome.

      • Thanks for the quick reply mate. My tv doesnt pass the signal through unforunatley, so I'll investigate the flymouse possibility. I already control my laptop with my phone, but this is for my wife and kids so it needs to be as simple as possible! Cheers.

Sorry guys but where are you finding these cheaper prices? The case + the unit itself delivered for under $50? Saying it's already available at that price means nothing without a link at least.

  • Hey guys I'm looking for a solution for my parents. Main use will be me bringing around movies (home movies, of course) for them view on a USB stick.

I was considering a WD Live as my most simplest, easy to setup and easy to use option. I don't really wanna stuff around too much, had enough of that with my Popcorn Hour.

Would a WD Live still be a good choice or should I consider this thing?

    • +1

while i love my RPi, for "parents" (obviously depending on there level of expertise, but the fact your doing it for them i assume they are at least somewhat technologically illiterate) something more simple like the WD live may well be a better option, something that they are less likely to screw up.

xbmc is great once its all setup but does take a bit to get setup.

  • +1

    I don't suppose this plays h.264 at 1080p

  • RRP does not equal bargain…

    • +3

should just get all the catalogues out of your mail box and post the items on OzBargain!

apparently RRP is a real bargain these days!

      • +2

Seriously, what is all this RRP rubbish you guys talk about? It's great value for price, that's what a bargain is. Whether it remains that price doesn't change value to price ratio. Find something that works just as well at a cheaper price. Should an iPhone not be listed as a bargain if the official RRP was $99 outright? I don't get the logic of some people.

        • -1

look up the word "bargain" in the dictionary.

if an Xbox is 399 RRP, someone creates a thread on here saying "OMG GUIZE, XBOX ONLY 399$$$" that doesn't make it a bargain just the same as posting a RPi at the same RRP it's been since release is a bargain.

          Mod: Foul Language

  • any x86 alternatives so we can put windows 8 on it.

    • It would have to be AMD or Intel then, none of those manufacturers make low-cost CPUs.

  • +1

If you buy a black case instead it costs $9.00, bringing the order to $45 and giving you free shipping without buying a capacitor (and also a saving of 4 cents, I guess).

  • I just bought two on tuesday. Arrived today I put OpenELEC on one and raspbian on the other… OpenELEC wins hands down.
The $36 is without GST by the way so with gst its $39.60
I wanted to buy one of these earlier and the price was around the $70 when all the shipping charges were added on. I saw it for $36 so bought two. I thought it was a good price too, and in stock and from australia with prompt delivery.
The older version is available for $27 as well.

    • The older version is the B Model. The $27 A Model has only just been released. Strange isn't it.

  • Mine just arrived at work. Looking forward to getting home and having a tinker!

  • Free shipping is now only available for orders over $75.

  • They seem to have really good service.

I received a call from someone at element14 asking if I had any questions and gave me her direct contact information.

  • +1

Does anyone know what the cheapest option is now?
