I bought this tv at this price when it was on special recently… Was not expecting much and when I saw the box with 'Grade A Panel' written on it I thought right, yeah sure….

To my amazement, not a single defective pixel, very little light bleed, very good contrast and very good image quality…

    What it doesn't have:

    24P support
Headphone connector (which is a major oversight on this tv! - it does however has an SPDIF output)
Glossy screen surface may be issue in some installations due to reflection

So if you're on the lookout for a high quality, affordable large screen tv for the bedroom room, or kids room or toilet even perhaps, then you cannot go past this tv..

(disclaimer: by large screen I imply 32" compared to 24" or 23" at similar prices, although I know some ozbarginers will not get out of bed/click on a sale unless the tv is at least 50" or bigger!)

    • Nice review. I bought one of the DSE branded 32" LED LCDs a year ago for only a little bit more than this and also wasn't expecting much but yeah I really can't fault it either. Obviously can't be compared to a big, juicy Sammy or other brand with all their bells and whistles but amazing value and I'd have no problems recommending them or buying another. They work well as computer monitors too!

      • "They work well as computer monitors too!"

Are you absolutely sure? Any reason why it won't be a decent computer monitor?

I'm on the lookout for a monitor.

        • +2

I'm using a very good Samsung LCD 32" TV as a monitor but also have 2 x Dell 27" Ultrasharp monitors on another computer as well as a 40" HD LCD on HTPC. I can say unequivocally that the Dell monitors are far superior for reading and I use the others only for video and casual web browsing. If you want to use your monitor for a lot of reading or business type work I recommend a good monitor over a tv. Your eyes will thank you. For more casual use a TV can be a good dual purpose option.

        • When initially performing a pixel check (using DPT) by connecting the tv to my pc I noticed that the image quality is not really ideal as a computer monitor… For gaming it's suitable and I played a bit of blur just to see what a game would be like, but for reading text, it's far too harsh on the eyes… I agree with bigallooka's statement about your eyes will thank you if you use a good monitor for reading or business type work.

Also worth keeping in mind that 32" screen at 1080P resolution close up like a pc monitor has rather large pixels which can make text appear blocky.

    • I would also agree with this, quality is decent and if your like me and dont have a huge collection of 1080 BD then it should suit your most basic requirements until you save enough for that 4k resolution model..

      • What are you talking about? It's better to watch your media on native resolution than on a different resolution even on higher resolution… 4k at this point in time is basically for gaming when the computer actually outputs to that resolution, not for TVs unless of course you're planning on making a gaming room or something.

    • Grade A panel doesn't mean it is great. The best grade is A+, followed by A. So really, by saying A panel they are using a lower quality panel. If I remember rightly it's based upon where it's cut from the larger production sheet, with those in the centre less likely to have faults and therefore A+. Though I could be getting that last part confused with graphics cards

    • u checked every pixel? nawce

      • +2

you just plug into a PC with a set of test pattern JPEGs.
Any defects are then immediately obvious.

HOWEVER I strongly not recommend this. You can watch TV for years, blissfully unaware of a dead pixel, and then see it every day after knowing it is there.

      • +1

Yes - standard policy of mine and only takes a few minutes :) run a small windows app called dead pixel tester (DPT) and cycle through red, green, blue, black and white screens and visually scan the display for unlit (or stuck) subpixels…

For TV's I'm not as fussy ( my older sharp LCD tv has 2-3 dead pixels and from normal viewing distance you cannot see them) - for a pc monitor I expect no dead/stuck pixels.

  • watsv24p
    This tv is 50/60hz right

    • If a set is 24P and the source is 24P (ie bluray) then it means the tv can play back the content at the same frame rate that it was shot in (24 frames per second progressively (the P in the 24)..

For most people its not really an issue, and yes, for $200 one shouldn't expect much but I threw it in there in the event someone was wondering if it supports 24P mode.

  • My experience with this TV sucks. I purchased back in early Dec when last on a Managers Special and unit was dead. I have been getting the run around with DSE ever since and still have not received a working TV nearly 2 months post purchase. Supposedly will be shipped (that was 2 weeks ago) and when I ask for a tracking No all I get is that they will email me when sent. Admittedly my experience is probably an exception to the rule but just putting it out there that you get what you pay for.

    • I got mine and it was missing some screws to attach the stand to the TV. Took them 2 weeks to get me the screws but I have been happy since then

      • -7

        ever heard of bunnings

        • Yes, tried them and masters and jaycar and no one had them. I had no other option but to contact DS and get them to order them in for me.

        • +1

mate, I would expect to have all the screws when you are buying a new tv and not to have to go to bunnings to get some

    • +1

Deano that sounds like you are being mistreated as a customer, and the best way to resolve it would be to contact Fair Trading.

      • Thanks and good advice. I did not even think of that. I have called their 1300 number and even spoke to a supervisor. Luck for me that I wrote down the names of people I spoke to and dates I called. Thanks again.

    • +3

Did you turn it on? In the reviews section lots of ppl struggled to find the on switch…

      • Yep I am aware of the switch under the right hand side of the screen and there is also another button on the side of the unit. The TV I was sent simply did not power up. I did the trouble shooting thing when I call DSE to inform them.

        • -1

so it's not so much the specs of the TV which is the issue. it's more of a case of the tv is r**ted and so is DSE's customer service.

        • Yep spot on

        • -3

ozbb sympathises with your situation but this experience has no bearing in the quality of the tv itself

        • +1

          It arrived dead…….FFS

        • +1

Except that the one he got didn't work out of the box.,which is not what I would call good quality. And if it's been hard for him to get a replacement then that also is of concern.

        • Don't feed the troll!!

        • the problem i have with this experience is its like saying I went for a drive in a BMW, it didnt start and the dealer was crap so therefore…

every company will experience a dead out of the box situation, even apple, even sony

its why there's a DOA warranty

we all know DSE is staffed by people who are really inexperienced salesfolk… expect a low quality of service

        • You are totally correct tonyjzx just not very diplomatic. On the other hand Dean04 and mskram aren't wrong either. Maybe your just one of those people who like poking people in the chest to get your point across? Anyway, it doesn't take much (or anything really) to get voted into troll territory here as you know :D

    • +1

known "issue" issue with this tv is the power switch. Its hidden at the bottom. Heaps of them were sent back being dead and it turned out that they were switched off.

Not saying that you got done by this just pointing it out.

      • +1

"Yep I am aware of the switch under the right hand side of the screen and there is also another button on the side of the unit. The TV I was sent simply did not power up. I did the trouble shooting thing when I call DSE to inform them."

        Pays to read first.

    • +2

Its unfortunate your experience with this tv has been so negative… DSE customer service seems a hit and miss affair… I once ordered a bluray player, waited 3 months, called them up asking 'where is it?' was told 'oh we had some stock left but discovered it was faulty so none were sent out'. I was then asked if I would be happy with a sony bluray player instead and they will give me a discount on the price so its the same as what I paid for the non-delivered version.. Guy on the phone was courteous and the issue was resolved quickly and 2 days later my bluray player arrived…

It does still surprise me in this day and age they do not have alerts in their system that flag orders as 'undelivered and it takes a customer to call up weeks later to chase it up…

Perhaps a DSE upper management person potentially reading this thread can take note: put in automatic triggers to deal with customer issues - if a customer has an DOA tv, and the issue is not resolved with say 3 weeks generate and escalate the issue to someone higher up.. As a fellow ozbargainer I take notes what other ozbargainers say and a bad comment has a way of being seen by 100s of people that changes a publics perception of a company both in goods and customer service..

Would this TV be any good for watching football ?

    • +2

No TV is good for watching sport.

    • +5

Not sure why you'd be negged for asking! Some TVs certainly do fast motion (like the footy) better than others. A fair ask!

      • +1

Yes - that's what I was getting at. My Dad is looking for a 2nd TV for footy when Mum kicks him out of the lounge room. However, he is really picky about motion blur.

        • +3

if he's really picky about motion blur get an old CRT TV!!

  • +1

Can any owners confirm whether this tv will play mkv's/avi"s from usb sticks ?

    • I've got the tv in my bedroom. It'll play avi no worries but that's about it, definitely not mkv or mp4 :-(

    • Hi great find with the soniq TV

I'm looking for a cheap 40-42" TV for my apartment

Quick question - anyone had any experience in buying the JB hifi refurbished TV's? Any problems? will they let u know the original issue with it?

I bought a sanyo 40" for my mum for 330 a while back from DSE, I wonder if soniq's ever hit that price. Is soniq better than the DSE brands? Probably all much the same

    • You can buy them for $400(we bought one of the same TV). So you are only saving $65 off the RRP for a TV that could have been raped and abused in its hey-day.

  • +4

Apparently there's a small switch/button somewhere that is like a master ON/OFF switch which people do not realise so they think its DOA.

    • Correct, bottom right hand corner on the back if you were looking front on.

  • +1

TV is basically the same as the DSE branded one they were selling about a year ago but with updated firmware (you can do it via USB). TV can play some MKVs with h264 compression but has trouble with ones that have Dolby audio and won't play. Has no problems with other videos or movies etc.

    • Thanks storyteller. Just pulled the trigger on one..Can I ask you where you got this updated firmware from ?

      • I'm not where to get it, it just had the option to do it via USB in the menu :)

        • Cheers mate.. I'll have a look for it when it arrives the next couple of days. Just seems a liitle strange the updated firmware doesn"t come pre-installed ?

        • I think it is, it's just for future updates

  • Got one. Good find. Ta!!

  • +1

Top quality tv! Well for the price of course! Tho have a samsung my self, for under $200 just can't go wrong, also using dicksmith gift cards $90+$90-5% staff discount card, bargain!

  • +1

Yeah i bought this last time and its a great tv for the price. PQ is Way better than the aldi ones. Mind you, It dosent play mkv or h264 but at this price point and a fair bit above, nothing does. It also dosent have discrete inputs for say using it with logitech remote. But other than that I really like ours. Hooked it to WDTV live and for $250 all up have a sweet setup for spare room.

    • if you look a couple of post up storyteller has advised theres an updated firmware available which will allow it to play extra media formats.

      • read again

        there is no updated firmware

there's just the provision in the menu for it

        • Most TV's have this option.
Will there ever be an update?
Most likely not, unless you buy a decent brand name.

  • The Surge Interceptor 8-Way Surge Board at $19 is available for Click and Collect, unlike previous deals this month which were online only. Looks to be a bug based on the item description given.

  • Will this work well as a computer monitor hook up as secondary monitor to a laptop?

  • +1

How is the inbuilt TV tuner on this unit?

My experience with the cheaper units has always been very bad :-(

I can plug a set of rabbit ears into my sammy and it will pickup all TV stations no problem. On my cheaper set I can't pick up a single channel.

    • The tv tuner is pretty good. I've got the tv in my bedroom and I just have an aerial cord plugged into the back of the unit then blu-tacked the other end to the wall. Looks a bit dodgy on my bedroom wall but the tuner works great I pick up all channels flawlessly.

  • -8

I should note this TV doesn't support MPEG4 TV playback so the High Definition digital channels won't work only that standard definition TV channels but that doesn't bother me I'm just warning others. I wouldn't watch movies on TV anyway too much ads. I don't really watch anything on TV because hey we've got the internet and 200GB a month from Telstra is cheaper than Foxtel by far and that includes the home phone.

    • Wow. That's important to know for some of us. Thanks

    • +3

Wtf? Are you saying it's just an SD tuner??

      • +2

i guarantee thats a load of crap

you cant get HD channels on an FHD tv? really now?

        • +3

All Australian DVB-T transmissions are MPEG2 Including HD so this tv shows all channels along with every other tv on the market

        • +1

Thanks for clarifying that. Had me worried for a moment.

        • Even then, the 'specs' tab on the DSE site says: Freeview Compliant - Yes.

As far as I know, part of the Freeview certification requires that the TV can decode MPEG4 signal. Some of the datacasting channels (such as TV 4ME) were encoding in MPEG4 briefly before changing down to MPEG2 encoding like all other channels, however.

  • What is the energy consumption star rating? I can't find it anywhere. I know it is <80w.

    • 5 Star. At least that what is says on the box :)
It's a great TV for the price, really surprised with the picture quality

  • I did a Click & Collect on the $19 Surge Interceptor for pickup at the Chatswood Chase store. The manager there refused to honour the order reservation because "its an online product only", "he can't do it that price" and "the Click & Collect reservation had not been confirmed by the store". Not impressed.

    • +1

One look at the website clearly shows two options under Availability: Home Delivery and Click & Collect. If DSE didn't want to provide Click & Collect on that item, they wouldn't have said that on the website. I think the manager is full of it and should be shown the error of his ways.

      • -1

He was unable to say of the T&Cs he was relying on to refuse the offer but he would not budge. I can't make a complaint to DSE until Monday when the head office is open again.

        • i checked this morning and it did have the click and collect option but after some umming and arring i was able to get the tv with free delivery just now.

    • -1

make a complaint, I cannot stand rude customer service.

    • -1

I'd report him whilst leaving your name and contact details asking for an apology from the store manager. See what happens, you might even get some form of amends.

  • BELKIN Kindle Folio $9.95 gets free shipping for some reason (or though not listed).
    Just grabbed one, thanks OP.

  • Thanks Op for posting the deal, just bought one.

  • This or this: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/91431 ?
In other words, is it worth paying $70 more for a smart TV?

    • The smart TV is only 720p resolution, this tv is 1080p. You are better off buying this tv and one of those android HDMI sticks to go with it.

      • It's actually 1080p, only internet content is 720p.

        • +2

No, Kogan updated their site with the real resoution. I have been watching this TV since its listing. Please check Kogan website for up to date specs. It can display 1080 content but it is downscales to 720 so not really that great. (Check the update at the top of the post on ozbargain too)

        • Thanks mate, I didn't notice that update. Well it makes it easier to decide now!

    • if by smart TV you mean internet browser why bother? phones/tablets seem much more able to do the job and you can watch whats on your tv while looking at a phone

      • I was kind of tempted to get youtube, movies, etc. on the big screen.

        • Most top end android phones these days have HDMI out if that helps…

      • If you follow the link you would see the agora smart TV runs android so its possible to use XBMC or dice player to stream content from your PC as well as use YouTube and whatever other video sites support mobile (TV has built in WiFi)

  • just got one… but took me a long time deciding on the optional extra 1 or 2 years warranty…
$28 for one extra year warranty on a TV seem okie… is it worth it ?

end up didn't select the the extra warranty.

    • +2

No, waste of money on a <$200 TV.

  • Does this TV have multi-viewing PIP/POP functions?

  • Anyone able to tell me how thick this tv is? or any sideviews of it.

Edit: it's 20cm thick, couldn't find it on the specifications.

  • Whats their return policy, can ou return in store or must mail back at own cost?

  • Ordered. Perfect timing as our main TV is acting up and will need warranty repair. The Viano will be sent to the bedroom after that…

  • I ordered one around 2am, as it was still tagged as being 198. PayPal sent the payment confirmation but how long does it take dick smith to send any email? Haven't received anything from dick yet…

    • I got mine 1 minute after paypal email came

      • Can I ask at what time you ordered? I'm thinking it might be because I ordered too late at night?

        • I jumped in early, ordered 12:15pm on saturday.. Did you register it with a DSE account? I can log in to their site and see order status etc

        • Sadly, no, I didn't have an account at the time of the order :/ I wrote to support to see how things are going…

        • I ordered mine.sat arvo just got email saying.its.been dispatched today. So maybe get it.tomorrow?
