Ardbeg 10yr Old Single Malt Scotch 700ml - 20% off at David Jones Perth CBD $71.96

50

DJ's Perth has this scotch for 20% off their normal price ($89.95) which brings it down to $71.96. Dan Murphy's & First Choice both have it for $80. Not a massive saving, but still, I think it is a great price for this bottle.

In my opinion this is one of the best scotches you can get at this price. It has a very unique flavour.

This may be at other DJ stores but I'm not too sure. There was 5+ bottles remaining after I left.

This is my favourite 10yo Islay single malt. But I haven't tried them all, yet.

    • which ones have you tried? and what makes this one more to your taste? — this is out of curiosity

      • I've tried quite a few wee drams when touring Scotland, I always go for an Islay rather than normal scotch. Normal scotch I have on the rocks but Islays I always have neat. But of the of the bottles I've actually bought myself its the Ardbeg, Laphroaig, and Bowmore.

I like the smoked peaty flavour, but Ardbeg seems to do it the best for my palate. It is a much smoother and balanced taste to me. I found the others smoked peat a bit overpowering to the point of being more like an artificial flavouring, especially Laphroaig. I've got half a bottle of Laphroaig here that I just can't finish, its lost all its nose.

Ice tends to hide some flavours. You should try some non-Islay malts neat.. you'll probably find you can detect a lot more complexity without the ice… maybe start with a sherried malt. If you're drinking a cask strength scotch adding a tiny splash of water will help.

With Laphroaig - If you get a chance, try the quarter cask or the 15yo, or some independant bottlings.. you might find them a bit less intense.

If you're a fan of the standard Ardbeg, try the Ardbeg Uigeadail it's a cracker!

I've recently accquired a glencairn glass which definitely enhances the aroma. I find the laphroaig 10 yold some days to my liking, some days not… but quarter cask is always good.

you should give lagavulin a go and the uigeadail definitely! =)

    • if you can get your hands on it - the scotch malt whiskey society put out an 8 y/o cast strength islay malt (from laphroaig) - wowoweewa!!
granted it probably cost 200 bucks - but if you are into young islay malts - wammmo!

Or you could pay a few dollars more and get some glasses to go with :)

Am I the only one who's a sucker for 'free' whiskey glasses? Every time I walk pass one of these packages I have to double back and think twice.

      • Yeah I get caught out come christmas time.

  • I had some of this on the weekend, and found it had an extremely strong smokey flavour to it. So much so, I really didn't enjoy it. I love my scotches but this didn't do it for me. The Glenlivit 15yo would be my pick.

Sounds like you're not a fan of Islay malts - not uncommon. I think the Islay peatiness tends to be something people either love or hate. Glenlivet is a Speysider, so try some other Speyside malts - some independently bottled Macallans or Mortlachs might interest you

    • If it doesn't taste like fire and dirt, you are doing it wrong.

  • Perfect timing for Feb Fast :P

Yes, people really do sign up for it… hic

  • Scotch scotch scotch scotch in my belly
