NewsGroupDirect 550GB Usenet Block for $20 USD ($19.12 AUD)

90

NewsgroupDirect are doing their block sale of 550GB for $20 USD down from $60 USD again (you actually receive 550GB to allow for headers). It's the best value block plan around and possibly preferable to 1TB deals at the moment. I'm sharing as a few friends have been asking me about when the next sale will be (last on OzB was 03/01/2013). Conveniently, new indexing sites have been popping up like mushrooms recently as well.
From the link:

Right now you can get 500 GB of usenet access for just $20, a savings of $40. Usenet blocks give you all the power. You choose when you buy. No monthly payments, no contracts, just usenet.

The best features include:

  • 1,620+ Days Retention
  • 50 SSL Connections
  • Access to NGD Member Rewards
  • Block accounts NEVER expire
  • Access to Ghost Path VPN Discount

Plan includes:

  • 550GB Allowance
  • 50 Connections
  • SSL Encryption

  • Link says it's 500GB, is there something else that I need to do to get the extra 50?

Every plan has an extra 10% on the stated amount to allow for headers:

      http://www.newsgroupdirect.com/help/#downloadingheaders

Does downloading headers count toward my bandwidth usage?

We give a 10% allowance on all accounts for header downloads. All headers downloaded will show up in your usage statistics. So, for example, a 20 GB account will really have 22 GB of usage counting the header allowance.

1620 days retention 16mins20secs for a DMCA takedown. Just a warning people, this is another Highwinds reseller so think about what you want the block for.

I'm not sure why this comment was negged.

As I understand it, there are Usenet providers deleting content nearly immediately upon receiving a DMCA takedown notice without verifying that the request is genuine.

Before you pay for a Usenet account, understand what the provider's policy is in respect of DMCA requests, and note that the provider might elect to make all content unavailable and simply claim that they received a DMCA request in respect of everything. Would make a great scam.

    • Dont know why you got negged for telling it how it is. +1 from me tho.

and 16mins20secs for a takedown? DMCA slowing down these days or something? :D

I've always wanted to get into usenet, but being veyr late to the party, i'm not completely sure (even after reading countless articles) how providers work. Does any usenet allow me access to any information stored in the general usenet, or restricted to the data uploaded to the specific provider I am subscribed?

Sorry for the possibly silly question, but I think it really would help me and others seeing this.

    • just get debrid

      • Get rpnet. Much better speeds.

      • Thanks for the suggestions, but it doesn't really answer my question..

I want usenet for a sickbeard setup, because thepiratebay edition one is crap.

"Does any usenet allow me access to any information stored in the general usenet"

Yep, they replicate data across farms and the most popular groups are across all providers. Simply put, yes :)

This company are a reseller for one of the biggest networks so you get good retention and fast speeds (I max out at 1.4MB/s due to my line sync).

  • What the hell is usenet and why do people need it?

  • "NewsgroupDirect has registered with the United States Copyright Office, as required by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)."

    Is it still useful?

    • Lots of discussion on this but I find with my habits it's more than worthwhile. TV shows are practically unaffected and when the odd article has been DMCAd, it's the same across most popular value providers (e.g. Astraweb). On the upside, retention is really good.

I was previously with ThunderNews who are also a Highwinds reseller and had few complaints after 2+ years with them. YMMV of course.

    • I am with Blocknews and have problems with DMCA takedowns. I believe European providers such as SSL News don't have the same trouble.
I am just about to try them myself as my Blocknews quota is almost finished. So this is only hearsay guys.

I use NGD with TweakNews as my secondary server. All of my downloads complete, no issues.

Then again it depends on what types of content you download. American TV and sports shows are usually the first to be detected and taken down.

One problem is that a lot of "good" indexing sites like NZB Matrix are dissapearing and the only ones left are auto-indexing sites and closed-registration sites, which have a fairly fragmented community. Needless to say the NZB community is in disarray ever since NZB Matrix died.

      • I'm just discovering this. Can't find a decent NZB anywhere, let alone free. Destroyed my vision of a torrent free sickbeard setup.

        • +1

The inbuilt indexers for SickBeard are decent enough to find archive shows going rips to 2008 (in my experience). You can add a few extra but the two indexers it includes haven't skipped a beat yet. Recently nabbed 130GB of Breaking Bad using NGD and inbuilt SB indexers and had no issues getting the NZB or with retention.

  • What is it best used for? Stuff that is near impossible to get anywhere else, dead torrent? PDF not on mediafire anymore? USENET

    …550GB to allow for headers…

They must be really big headers…
