Yamaha MCR550SBG Micro Hi-Fi for $412 delivered (SRP $899) @ JB Hi-Fi Factory Scoop

90

I have been looking for this for 2 days in JB Hi-Fi website. It is part of JB HI-FI factory scoop deals in http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/factory-scoops.htm

This represents about 50%+ off discount which is quite big I think, however this is an online only deals. I went to JB store in Westfield Sydney yesterday and still find this model being sold for $800+.

Not sure when the deal expires, it says limited quantity.

I have the MCR-750 (looks much the same, but plays 3D BlueRays / MKV's etc over the HDMI 1.4 ARC compatible cable). I paid $700 a month ago at Hardly Normal - Martin Place (RRP $999) for anyone who is interested.

I can definitely vouch for the audio quality of these speakers. Don't expect thunderous bass like most mainstream speakers though. DAB is a big plus :)

Review here. They like the electronics: the speakers, not so much.

    • Agreed. For a compact stereo to be used as a stereo only (which looks absolutely stunning), my vote goes with:

For an all in one system that eliminates the need for a 2nd remote, WDTV, BlueRay player etc (i've gone for a minimalist approach), I couldn't go past the MCR-750 (I went through this research a month ago).

    • I bought a micro system from AIWA back in 2005, manufactured by Sony, and simply a rebadged version of the microsystems Sony used to sell in the late nineties. The electronics are excellent (how many micro systems weigh 8kg and have a cooling fan?!), but the speakers not so. Just bought some JBL bookshelf speakers from Amazon US for $188 delivered. This may be the way to go for a system like this.

It's a pity that few people nowadays know how to appreciate the value of quality amplifiers with low distortion.

      • Is the fan a gimmick? What's generating the heat? I've only ever seen fans in monster amps, and then mostly only Class-A amps.

        • Not a gimic, I think. They crammed so much into this thing that the back extrudes 6cm from the overall chassis. I can only guess that the reason it weighs so much is because they put a genuine amp in it (albeit low-power, only 2x30w RMS), because most micro systems weigh next to nothing. Granted, it also has cassette and DVD. Perhaps it could have done without the fan, I don't know. But at least I know it's not just a hollow box with 2 chips that do everything (and sound awful)

  • I had my eye on the MCR-550 a while ago whilst I was looking for a compact stereo for my bedroom. Checked the specs and did a bit of research and realised there low end isn't very punch but the audio quality if pretty good. It's a shame since yamaha does make pretty decent audio equipment.

I need a compact system that is a bit punchier than this little beauty but this is a really good bargain at that price. Very tempted.

Here is another cheaper option if you don't want a compact stereo system and already have a cd player -

I think the amp is RA-5000.

    • wow thats a great deal IMO

      • Agreed. Worth a post.

  • One of the rare features on this system is dual AUX in, so you could use this for TV and other gadgets such as mobile or mp3 player. There are not really many comparable system that has that IMO.
I'm aware with the bass response with not being good, but probably you could help that by adding a sub-woofer? It does allow you to add one, although I couldn't find any official suggestion list of sub from Yamaha.

  • Out of stock at JB. I found it $477 delivered from amazon.de. Still looking for a better alternative price.

Edit: $477 for the black/black, $512 for the silver/black as originally posted.

    • The black/black one is still available at JB for $412
