Is this worth 5x the price of the AliExpress dongle you can get for around under $20?

Link for which one fo buy?

Its the CarlinKit Mini5 Pro Wireless CarPlay one from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/898705

works flawlessy on the corolla hybrid.

        • +1

          Thanks

+1 for the CarlinKit Mini5 Pro. I tried several other dongles from Ali and none of them worked until I bought the CarlinKit. The issue is that the USB port in my car has very low power so it would reboot itself as soon as my phone connected. A seller offered me a workaround by using a USB piggyback cable that connects to the cigarette port and then to the USB port, but I was trying to have less cables.

The listing on the AliExpress ad listed the power for the dongle as:

          Power Input: 5V±0.2V = 1.0A
          Power Output: 5V±0.2V = 1.0A

          • @chigga: I'm having the same issue. Could you please share the link to the piggy back cable ?

            • +2

@ozj: My link was removed. The description for the product on AliExpress is:

12V AI Box Power Cable Prevent Restart Wireless CarPlay Android Auto Two-Point Line High Speed Power Supply Cable USB Port

              • @chigga: Got it. Thanks alot!

        • completely freezes/locks up in my 2018 i30 after a few mins.

i also have their 5.0 2Air which is great, with only a small issue once every while.

        • Agree 100%. Bought this a few weeks ago from an ozbargain deal and very happy with it. Using it in a Lexus NX300 2017.

Been using carlinkt for a couple of years now, pretty good.

This one is designed an manufactured in Europe (Hungary more specific), I just don't trust Chinese devices

Funny, that is exactly what Abas al-Akar, the former head of procurement at Hezbollah said.

    • Nice, thanks for this

Sure beats the one John Cadogan was trying to peddle on his YouTube channel for $80 the other week

      • +1

@pegaxs - keep it together man.

        • +2

          Cadogan makes rants, cheers!

    • Yes, I tried a few different options from Ali and Amazon and they all were slow and unstable. This one works perfectly

    • I don't have any of the AliExpress dongles, but I specifically bought the AAWireless Two because it supports two devices. I assume they exist, but I had trouble finding anything on AliExpress.

The AAWireless Two has a button to switch between devices, and it'll automatically switch if it can't find a device.

Perfect for my wife and me, as we share a primary vehicle.

I considered using cheap dongles with a basic USB switcher but then AAWireless Two came on to the market.

    • I've been using an AliExpress one for around r months now.
Only issue I have is that calls come through the phones speaker not the head unit.
Everything else like navigation, music, and voice commands work fine.

    • Good question, and I think it's a matter of individual use case. The guys at AAWireless were first to market with this product by a long shot — they may have even conceptualised it.

Yes, it's a product which essentially does the same thing as countless Chinese ones at a fraction of the price. I've never used them, but I have been using the first-gen AAWireless for years without an issue. For me, what sets it apart is its companion app. It keeps the hardware on the latest firmware versions, allows custom DPI scaling of the UI to my liking, disables touch limitations, and offers various other functionality tweaks. Another standout feature is that AAWireless provides solutions and baked-in workarounds for cars with peculiarities, like always-on USB ports and other compatibility issues. Arguably, it has the best compatibility throughout the car industry. I'll definitely upgrade to AAWireless Two as soon as I can afford it — mostly because of brand loyalty.

All of that said, considering how cheap the numerous Chinese equivalents are, I'd definitely recommend a new user try one of those first. If they have issues, then AAWireless is the best second choice.

Wow, that is so expensive. Where is the bargain?

      • +8

don't want to expose their data being sent to Chinese servers.

        WTF ?

Do you think the $20 Chinese units hide a SIM card and a data plan inside, and are actively uploading?

        LOL.

        • -6

These adapters have Bluetooth and Wireless interfaces no one mentioned SIM. They have their own firmware/OS - think of them as a Raspberry Pi. And they act as the man in the middle reading everything that goes from you phone to the head unit of your car.

These adapters will normally require an app on your phone to configure them or update firmware. It's not hard to encrypt data from the Wireless adapter (like your SMS from you bank with 2FA) send it to the app and the app then sends it to a C2 (Command & Control server if you are not familiar).

There are other concerns like encryption used for Bluetooth and Wifi standards.

Of course the probably of having security vulnerabilities is low but I would personally pay a bit more for peace of mind.

You might want to check below link what a 'normal' cable can do:

IMO This is it in a nutshell, it's unlikely, but possible, so it's worth being cautious, especially given the access our phones have and the information they contain these days.

          • +6

            @zz:

think of them as a Raspberry Pi

Cheaper to just get a Raspberry Pi zero and make your own wireless Android auto.
            https://github.com/nisargjhaveri/WirelessAndroidAutoDongle

Then you can stop worrying about China

If it's not open source, you don't know what they are doing with your data. Why do you trust this mob but not aliexpress?

            • -5

@Bruceflix: Good question, I agree with you that open source is the way to go but unfortunately not too many options on the market. The raspberry pi link you shared is interesting so might look into that. Basically the main reason is the same when why I bought my Google pixel and not Xiaomi. I don't trust both companies but I think Google invests more in security than others. Similar here I think AAwireless will put more effort into securing their devices where for 20$ a piece there is not much left to pay for a security professional. It's the reason why so many cheap aliexpress video cameras and routers can be hacked so easy. At the end of the day it's just business and you have to cut somewhere to be competitive.

          • @zz: 😂 grow up. Are you 13?

          • +3

@zz: I have one of these, but honestly, this comment about 'data being sent to Chinese servers' is either misinformed or malicious. If the worry is an app installed on your phone is 'sending data to a C2 server', they don't need to go to the trouble of building a dongle lol. And unless there is a secondary stage where there is a command issued and the dongle is doing some malicious, it doesn't really fit the criteria of a C&C server now, does it?

Also not sure what your point is re: BT/Wifi standards, sounds like you're just throwing out buzzwords, like the reference to C2. These protocols are well understood, and no one is going to implementing a 'more encrypted' Bluetooth because no one will have a device that can use it lol.

Anyway, bought this because I had the predecessor, and this new version has a button to switch which of the 2 phones connected is driving Android Auto instead of having to do it via the app. New version doesn't support carplay tho, which might be a dealbreaker for some.

            • @xii4obear: I didn't know my v1 did! You're saying it supports iPhones ?

              • +1

@y2k: yes! Have a look at this. https://www.aawireless.io/en/carplay It's a bit more finicky than Android Auto (and no app), but it works as expected. If you have an Android and iPhone together when starting the car up, it'll be the Android that connects first most of the time. You'd have to either airplane your Android or use the Android app to swap to iPhone.

Frankly if the Chinese are going to take our data from wireless adapters in my CarPlay/Android systems, then I am F..ked as they are just as likely to have hidden links in my Solar Panels, Inverter, WM, TV, DM, Coffee maker and every other connected device.

The point being how much more data do they need on me.

Frankly when they do invade they have bigger fish to fry like government servers, internet cable, traffic lights and power grid, the latter ironically disconnecting my wireless adapter from their servers.

Then again I guess my occasional uber pick ups might be of interest to some bored surveillance officer in remote china.

BTW dont take this as being unconcerned about China. They still can screw us big time as they have with their past and future tariffs that affect us more than little Donald has ever done.

    • I have heard it isn't so much in the hardware but in the software and support.

I've got a Carsifi adaptor and I've considered switching based off of Reddit opinions

    • It mightn't be a bargain in the category of Android Auto Wireless adaptors, but it's a decent price for this specific model.

Been using Xuda for $20 from Alibaba suprisingly it's been great. Works 99% of the time and the other 1% needs to be repluged in.
Me and a couple of mates use this for both Car Play and Android Auto in various cars.
I first heard about it here in another post. So thanks to whoever that was.

  • +3

Had the first gen (indigogo) of this device wasn't very good would lose connection and freeze needing a reset. Early adopter buggy new tech I get it lesson learned, this one could be better. I did get one from Aliexpress for about $20 and that has worked flawlessly.

    • -3

Thanks for sharing. I hope this new version will work better (it's too early for me to comment as I have it for a short period of time) but if it will be unreliable I will call it out here so everyone can make an informed decision.

Yeah my $20 AliExpress AA dongle been flawless for the last year or so.

Rip off. Get the Xuda from Aliexpress for $20. Works flawlessly for Android Auto and Car Play.

  • +1 for Xuda. Works great! 👍

  • Been using this for a couple months. Works great, no issues. Highly recommend if it's within your budget.

This is my first wireless AA adapter so can't comment on all the cheaper ones found on Amazon and Ebay but did do some research and landed with AAWireless 2.

One of the great features about the AAWireless 2 is that you can change the DPI of your screen.

  • I got this Mini Wireless CarPlay & Android… https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0DMW3J9DB which has both Android auto and Apple car play and so small it stays hidden in my car. Works great so far. Only issue is when you have to step away from the car it will freeze the display so had to reconnect.

  • Will this work with an after-market wired AA head unit or does the head unit have to be factory

  • I have the first gen and it works great.

For those who are contemplating if it is worth the price.. You can either:

    1. Buy this one and forget about it
    2. Take the risk and try a few (like others here have), eventually ending up with a good one. It may end up costing you more than option 1.

I'm someone in camp 2 most of the time, but the wife got this and I have no complains.

  • I have the first gen version of this, and after having multiple cheaper ones, this one is by far the most consistent, would buy again. Plus, this one will also allow AAAD apps like carstream, meaning you can display youtube on your head unit, which is pretty handy if you're wanting to watch stuff on your head unit (while parked of course, but does work while driving).

  • Am I the only one who actively dislikes wireless Android Auto?

I recently used a hire car for several weeks which only had wireless Android Auto, and it doesn't seem as reliable as the wired version. My phone also seemed to get really hot, which didn't happen when I was using the wired Android Auto.

In any case, I usually plug my phone in to charge when driving anyway.

    • To each their own - they're all valid points.
Wireless Android Auto utilises both bluetooth and 5ghz wifi simultaneously, so can generate some heat and chew through battery quickly on longer drives.

  • +1

I've had the 1st gen AA wireless, can't recommend it enough. Plug, set and forget. Mitsubishi outlander.
Best part? Ability to change DPI to suit my screen. Example Google maps, report incident button can become invisible if the DPI is not right.

  • I have one of these, after a couple of cheaper ali/eBay ones that just weren't 100% all the time.

This is flawless, everytime, never fails. In my opinion it's worth the extra cost… if this important to you, which it is to me.
