Advice needed: Cuckoo CHSS1009FN Pot Peeling

My Cuckoo chss1009fn is out of warranty with a peeling inner pot. I don't want to use it as it is unsafe with clear coating coming off. Cuckoo are out of stock until Late May and the price is $130 plus shipping, let's say $150, total.
A brand new replacement unit is only worth $519 now. I've had it just over 4 years and I feel violated that the pot has only lasted that amount of time.

We mainly cook rice, steam some frozen stuff, and had a tiger in the past that lasted 14 years but then the battery/pcb died. Tigers have gone up so much now in price.

I have access to cost price for Breville. Would a Breville " Breville The Rice Box Induction Rice Cooker" be a good option? I can get that for $181. Brand new with warranty and I'd assume parts are more readily available. Really don't want to give Cuckoo any more money. Thanks OzB family.

JV, what have you done with spackbace?

I have the Breville, and it’s fine. I wish it cooked congee

Honestly, I've moved away from any telfon coated pots period, and the only stainless pots in Australia I can find non-asian branded ones, which i'm quite skeptical about making good rice.
We managed to find a pot from Jooyoung (not a big name here, but relatively large in China, just behind Midea and Xiaomi) which has worked really well so far and I'm quite happy with it. Link below

      micro-pit hydrophilic film

Sound like something that might be adding microplastics into your food…

      • I must admit the advertising is quite contradictory, it says zero coating but talks about this micro pit film.

I've scrubbed the pot a few times and I can't see or feel any film or coating of any kind.

I'll give them the benefit of doubt, can't be any worse than the flakes of telfon we've been consuming

        • can't be any worse than the flakes of telfon we've been consuming

Microplastics accumulate in your body, especially the brain and the body does not get rid of them.

    • That pot looks the goods. Does the rice come out ok?

      • We've done white short grain and jasmine so far, and I'm quite satisfied with the results. The rice comes out cooked evenly, and quite chewy and as a whole grain, not too starchy or pasty or mushed up.

  • It's probably flakey.

Do you rinse the rice in the rice cooking bowl? I found out the hard way that’s apparently a big no no

    • What? Where are you meant to wash it?

      • +7

Seperate bowl - or some people do it in a fine strainer.

The swirling of the rice apparently is abrasive and can stack up over time causing damage to bowl - I think even if I’m through still takes 4-5 rinse to get the water clearish

There’s other factors too like if the bowl is still hot after keep warm mode, you need to let it cool right down before washing it and doing a new batch of rice

      • One of these…

    • Yeah I rinse in the bowl

      • +4

Yeah, you shouldn't be washing the rice inside your bowl. Raw rice is very hard and abrasive. Every time you wash your rice in there you are basically rubbing away the surface of your bowl.

When you are seasoning (preparing) your brand new mortar and pestle you use raw rice to grind away all the dirt and grit. Yeah, you use rice to grind away at the volcanic (basalt) rock. Think about what you are doing to your nice teflon coated bowl every time you swish your raw rice in there.

        Edit: Added some words.

Thanks for the heads up. We use a stainless steel InstantPot for rice cooking but certainly something for future reference.

On this doll, point to where the bad pot touch you?

Damaged the bowl in my Tiger cooker as well.

Replacement bowl was $180 and got it, brand new cooker was well over $500.

I also wash rice inside the bowl which is a big no no. So I now wash it in a stainless steel bowl and just transfer it over.

    • i recently got a new inner pot for my tiger rice cooker too.

I dont make a lot of rice and honestly didnt notice there were scratches inside the bowl and the sides.

I've never washed my rice in the inner bowl so not sure your bowl was damaged.

    • Having to transfer it in order to wash rice would annoy me.

  • When did cooking rice get so hard?

  • I have a cuckoo rice cooker which broke down a little bit after 2 years, and its already out of warranty. Had to pay $140 + shipping (around $180) for them to fix. Very unhappy with the quality of their rice cooker.

I think the Breville and Phillips one are quite good. My sister has a Phillips rice cooker since 10 years ago - looks old but still function perfectly and no issue with the pot peeling too.

  • Just get a stove-top pressure cooker. Cheaper and you can use whatever horrible abrasives on it to clean it 😁

  • I had a cuckoo rice cooker as well that broke multiple times due to snapped cables on the lid and finally the pot started to peel as well. Recently got a Toshiba from eBay, the quality feels much better at a lower price https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186881258950?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • I love Toshiba ay. Is it really worth 190 tho?
Ive got a $15 rice cooker from kmart that cooks rice perfectly. What am i getting for my $191?

  • What’s the reasoning behind rinsing rice?

    • +1

removes starch so it's less sticky.

Also habit from the old days where rice wasn't harvested as hygienically.

      • Have you seen them harvest rice recently in India, Thailand and the rest of south east Asia?

  • Non-stick rice cookers will flake sooner or later. See if you can find a ceramic bowl cooker. Otherwise, go with a stainless steel bowl.

  • "Breville The Rice Box Induction Rice Cooker" be a good option? I can get that for $181"

Never knew Breville released an induction model. If you can get it for $181, I'd be going down that route.

Would be the cheapest induction rice cooker on the market today.

I wish Xiaomi would sell their induction rice cookers again. They were cheap (<$150) and good quality.

Did you get one before? What happened to it?

      • Yes, I got a couple from FB Marketplace. Couldn't buy them new anymore.

Xiaomi or their Australian distributors just stopped selling them in Australia.

You may be able to grey import them privately but they won't come with the AU plug.
