Segate GoFlex Desk 1.5TB, AC, USB 3 - $79 @ Officeworks

70

As I was floating around down town in the heat today thought I'd check OW for a sand proof bag for my Q. So i casually wandered by the hard drives (i get more earnest around the printer cartridges) and noted that the HD's I posted here but 2 days ago http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89640 were back up to $99 - but the 1.5 was down at $79. It may be a good deal (I don't know I'm not a hoarder) but as usual you are the best judge of whether this deal is good or not.

dont take this the wrong way, and im certainly not going to down vote you, but after all the 2 and 3tb specials of hte last month or so $79 for 1.5tb leaves a bit of a sour taste :)

    • I feel pretty much the same way. particularly when the deals are from amazon.

      • hi man, you reply to the wrong deal.

      • What deals from amazon? Local retailers have had $112.48 3tb drives, ~$75 2tb drives? Unless you mis-commented.

I think it's good for Mac user who wants FireWire interface?

      ????? its USB3

      • you can buy the firewire interface. that's why people buy this Seagate GoFlex

        • correct - good for mac.

How much extra cost for Firewire option?

How much more volume & weight need to carry for that extra functionality?

How easy to lose the extra bit(s)?

          (We bought 2 TB Buffaloe external drives for $99 incl delivery from a previous deal… everything included;
          even Firewire cable!)

        • Im I alone in thinking 'IVI' is 'jv' trying an incognito move?

  • Your title says "Segate," it should be "Seagate" =)

    • Yeh - it's cos I'm really Steven Seagal and I can never remember how to spell my own name. With an A or without…

  • The Firewire base is about $30 from memory. Just a warning - I bought two of these drives (this capacity) a few months ago and out of the box they both click like they're thinking of dying.

Is it a click or more of a chirp? If it's the latter then it's most likely the APM "feature" of the drive parking the heads to save power or somesuch nonsense. Clicking can also be the same thing.

Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive with something like crystal diskinfo and make sure everything is happy, chances are it'll come back all good and there's nothing to worry about.

There was new firmware released for a lot of drives to address this so that might be worth looking into if you're concerned.

uh oh - see my post directly above. They may have had their cocks punched.

failing that what foobar said is sage advice.
