On sale is this 2 bay NAS Mini PC that I consider to be the smaller cousin of the Aoostar WTR Pro. This is a great option for those looking to get a DIY NAS on a tighter budget and since it has an Intel CPU with Quick Sync support, it's an excellent choice for Plex and Jellyfin transcoding. Stack with AliExpress Cashback and upsized TCB/CR/SB cashback for further savings.

For storage this one has 2x 2.5"/3.5" SATA bays and a single M.2 NVMe x1 2280 slot. For an additional M.2 NVMe slot you can replace the WiFi 6 card with an M.2 Key to M.2 NVMe adapter (i.e. this) to convert into an M.2 NVMe 2230 SSD slot.

Features include the Intel N150 4 core, 4 thread CPU, 1x DDR4 SODIMM slot, two 2.5G LAN ports, fan cooling, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C with video output and 65W Power Delivery input, microSD slot, USB 3.0 x2, USB 2.0 x2, 3.5mm audio and DC jack.

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate and GST inclusive.

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

  • If I buy one of these NAS (wither this or the one in the other deal), which software can I use to backup photos from different devices?

    • +2

You could try Xpenology, TrueNas which are nas specific OS with plugins.
Or running a proxmox host with nextcloud/owncloud/photoprism/immich as lxc.

      • For photos specifically use immich 👌

  • Guessing you can extend the capability by using one of those DAS enclosures. I have a 2 bay and a 5 bay enclosure which could be put to good use.
The question is whether this is better than buying a mini pc and doing the same with that, albeit with some fairly good savings as this one comes without memory or storage for the OS?

It's 'how much do you want to tinker?'. Want a NAS? Buy a NAS. Too expensive? Buy this. Too expensive? Buy a n100 or like motherboard off Ali. Too expensive? Buy a used office thinkcenter or whatever.

I don't think a minipc fits in there at any level, unless you want to use M.2 instead of spinning rust. Some people that's a literal necessity for their house/environment etc, but they are paying a lot for that.

This form factor is just really convenient. 2 drives for mirroring, plenty for a 'normal' person. The 5825u CPU version is 'more CPU value' but if part of your workload is transcoding video then you lose a bunch of that extra CPU. If people want a NAS though, they won't use that extra CPU anyway and should just get the n100 version.

This would be particularly nice as a primary NVR, with secondary NAS duties.

  • EU plug only… ?

Note: I have the N100 based version of these used as a backup server. Its an absolute cracker.. really snappy with debian on it. very quiet and a nice form factor

    • DC Jack is EU plug. It can be powered via USB C with a 65W PD charger.

      • i would not use a phone charger for running a device like this… they dont deliver power as consistently as a proper power supply.

        • It's really no different. The DC barrel jack charger is still going to have the same "problem" as a PD charger. The device will draw what it needs and the amps drawn will change depending on the workload and the idle vs active states. Otherwise if it was delivering power consistently then it wouldn't be able to draw lower watts while it's asleep on idling.

  • Any idea if there is a beefy Aoostar WTR Pro intel (12th gen+) variant in the works, or another alternative than building your own?
Keen to combine my NAS and mini PC(s) into one machine, prefer Intel for Plex.

    • Nothing yet. Only the Aoostar WTR Max 7 bay NAS with the Ryzen Ryzen 7 8845HS and Ryzen 9 8945HS CPUs and supposedly support for a Radeon 7600 XT GPU. Good for Jellyfin.

  • Would a 1tb m.2 sata ssd work on this? Or is there an adapter I could use to connect it to the WiFi 6 port?

    • adapter is linked in the post by the OP.

      • I believe that does not support sata based m.2. Mine has a b+m key.
