if you want to have hardware transcoding enabled then try Jellyfin instead of Plex. It's free.
Also please try using the search button as the pros and cons of mini pcs has been discussed to death on here.
They're fast enough for every day web browsing, youtube, email, torrenting and usenetting. Yes they can play back AV1 4K videos without dropping frames, yes they can run emulators up to PS2/Wii/Gamecube at 2X resolution, no they are not good for modern AAA gaming as, yes they make good homelab servers for opnsense, home assistant, jellyfin etc.

    • How does the network card work with Opnsense? It is single NIC in the pictures.

      • you buy a mini PC with dual (or more) NICs, not necessarily this specific brand/model.

  • I use an N100 as an Emby server (Library on NAS). Works a treat. It also doubles as dedicated server for some games every now and then.
Is the N150 much of an upgrade over the N100?

    • +3

In my limited knowledge just researching the n150 it looks barely any faster than the n100. It's mostly on the GPU and it wouldn't be noticeable outside of benchmarks

      • Ah nice. Thanks for the reply.

    • I'm a mac user. Considering buying one to play some old game like HoMM3. Is this box good enough to run it?

      • +1

Yep, hardware won't be the hold up. Software comparability might.

      • +1

I thnk I own HOMM3 HD on GOG, I'll try downloading it and running it over the weekend.

  • +7

Just to plant the seed, one of these and a 16TB external drive. Cheaper than paying for Netflix+Disney Plus and it pays for itself after 18 months.

    • +1
    • +6

Make sure you seed your plant after downloading :)

    • +4

Or you can just use stremio for free?

      • +11

Try touching grass or talking to your family members or friends. It helps with the paranoia.

      • +1

Any what are they spying on exactly?

        • +3

          Sinophobic people only.

          • @Clear: from my recent encounters, it seems that tech bros with billionaire aspirations are extremely sinophobic due to 'less advanced countries' who have learned how to design (and not just manufacture, due to cheap labour) advanced goods; daring to compete against more advanced countries and their monopolies/oligarchies. Look at the US protectionalism going on and their tariffs against any externally produced goods.

        • +1

Not spying - using you as part of a botnet - like what happened with TP-LINK
          https://www.cybersecuritydive.com/news/-botnet-exploits-tp-l…

      • Plane tickets to China are cheap these days. I would suggest buying one to get some perspective on life and fixing that sinophobia.

  • If i have very weak old synology nas, can i somehow pair it with this, so i can run dockers, torrent, and transcode ?

    • +1

I have a N100 mini pc paired with a Synology DiskStation DS420j. Running Emby no problem. Have had up to 4 streams going (1080p) at a time and it handled it fine. Some streams were external as well, not all local direct play.

      • Exactly this. The old NAS would act as the storage only and nothing else. The microserver would be the processor that runs plex through the network. Works really work, did this to my brothers old old nas.

      • -1

How to pair? Can i put this on top of my syno? I assumed i have to connect network cable from mini pc to syno? Lucky my syno has two ethernet port, so the other cable is from syno to router? Sorry im noob. My syno is 1511+

        • Just setup an NFS share on the synology.

Map it on the mini PC.

          Done :)

        • You don't pair them - both devices are entirely standalone.

Just put them both on your network and then tell the Media software on the PC (Kodi, Plex, Whatever) to look for it's content on \\synology\movies

You're just using the Synology as dumb storage.

          • +1

@Nom: As Nom said. connect NAS to your local network switch using a cable, connect mini PC to network switch using a cable.. you can have the media player / smart tv connected to the same network using wifi, but cabling is so much faster and more stable than wifi.
try Jellyfin streamer, it works well with the Intel N100/N150 GPU for hardware transcoding and it's free, unlike Plex.

    • why, they only support 1 dimm, ram is always the limiting factor

better off with an old 8500T usff pc, will run quieter and probably more power efficient

generally the power supplies that come with these cheap machines are well cheap, just like the pc itself, cheap build quality

      • -1

because Intel hobbled the chip to single channel only so they didn't out perform their I3s. It's been widely available info for the past year that the nx00 series only supports single channel RAM.
likewise power consumption of the n100 has been widely available for the same amount of time, so maybe do some actual fact checking before sharing opinions?

        • if you bothered to look at real world power consumption from the outlet you'd know that these tend to such more juice than older/faster 8500T cpus

and not because the old chip is more efficient, it's because the old power supply isn't absolute rubbish

          • @desync: champ, I have 2x intel n100s, 1x n150 and 1x n5095 systems - plus I have a wattmeter. I know how much power they use and that is WHY I CHOSE THEM. Because they use such little power they are perfect for my homelab and NAS.

  • is it better than n100?

    • +2

Yes by a small amount only like 4% on average.

      • Maybe it should be called the N104 as N150 implies it's a big upgrade.
These things are still super impressive looking considering how little they cost

        • +1

          N150 with DDR5 is a noticeable improvement, over N100 with DDR4.

        • I disagree but really neither of us have any say. N104 sounds like it would be a different SKU released at the same time which the n150 is not. N200 sounds like a bigger upgrade while n150 sounds in the middle with a graphics, memory and IO bump seeminging reasonable.

          • @Dsiee: intel are terrible with naming CPUs.. there are n200 and n300's, n150 for a 1 year on refresh is bad naming.

  • How are these units with fan and noise?
I’m thinking of using it as Plex server but placed in the living room area… don’t want something that’s loud though. Is it as quiet as the Mac Mini :P or am I too hopeful?

    • I have had one for the last month. I don't think it has ever made a peep

    • I've used mine for daily desktop usage and it's silent - EXCEPT for when I'm unpacking a 30-60GB file downloading from usenet. Then the fan will ramp up for the minute or so, then drop back down to being silent.

      • Bought one based on your feedback. I want something as a basic desktop that isnt too noisy. Might buy a second for proxmox duties if I'm happy with it

        • I hope you enjoy it. These are perfect for light desktop and daily web browsing / email / youtube duties (which the vast majority of all home PCs would be being used for imo). I did replace the shitty brand 512GB NVME which came with mine with a 1TB WD mid level brand (these pcs have a limitation with their PCIe lanes so ultra fast SSD won't work at full speed anyway - PCI3 level should be 'good enough' and better than what any of the cheap brands come with.. not that there's a huge difference in speed UNLESS you're also downloading large err.. linux ISOs and unpacking them on the drive that came included with the PC :)

  • How do you power these? The picture shows DC 12V 3A, do you need to use a travel adaptor? Do you need to buy a separate AU power brick?

    • +1

After ordering mine, I msged the seller and asked for an “AU power supply, if possible”. Seller immediately replied “My pleasure :)”, LOL. Review pictures look like it’ll probably be a Euro power plug, possibly with an AU converter. If I don’t like it, 12v AU power plugs are cheap

        • I suspected that 🤔

    • DC jack or use a USB-C charger with PD 12V charging, as the USB-C port supports power input.

    • +1

You can use a travel adaptor with the one they send you or get a 12V 3A with an Australian plug. I used this one for my N100 SOYO with no problems https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006770868832.html. If SOYO will send you an AU plug when asked that would be even cooler.

I am genuinely impressed with these little N100/N150s and SOYO has been a good brand so far.

    • Mine came with an asian power plug which luckily I have plenty of Xiaomi powerboards and other random adapters around. It can also power off USB-PD but keep in mind, if updating the USB drivers, it'll actually turn off the PC because the USB ports lose power as they get turned off while updating drivers

  • +8

TDP of N100 is 6W. TDP of N150 is 10W. TDP of N97 is 12W.

N150 is fastest CPU. N97 is fastest GPU.

N100 is the best for power efficiency and speed.

    • +5

Some bios, the TDP of the cpu can be adjusted. The N150 box I am using can adjust the TPD to 6W like the N100 or higher then the 10W

    • yeah but that doesn't really mean much when the cheap chinese power supplies are vampires sucking up and extra 5 - 10w

      • +2

        proof or conjecture?

        • Its a known quantity. Bundled power supplies on cheap Chinese branded electronic devices are known to be made with the absolute cheapest materials and have low efficiency. A PD power adapter from a known brand and a USB C cable will be a bit more efficient with less parasitic losses.

          • @Dollar Dreamer: If you skip the AC power source and used a DC source with short cable distance u can save even more power due to no loss at AC to DC conversion.

There is lots of things that can be done. Just most isn't worth the cost to implement. Like same voltage used at source so no step up/down. Cable selection to reduce power lost.

Edit: saying that it doesn't mean much by reducing the TPD when there is power wasted at the power supply seem…. like saying it no worth saving money here because u are spending money elsewhere so why bother unless u spend money to save everywhere.

          • +2

@Dollar Dreamer: They're actually fine, here's a review of the N100 model of this PC showing tested power consumption:

            https://goughlui.com/2024/12/22/review-soyo-mini-pc-m2-plus2…

The unloaded power adapter managed an impressive 36.5mW standby power which is very low. With the Mini PC attached and in shutdown, this rose to 993mW.
When running at idle and connected to peripherals, the consumption was 9.73W. With the peripherals disconnected, this fell to 7.61W.

      • +3

Not true, the entire PC uses about 9W at idle:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqskZVyuVFE&ab_channel=Quick…

    • +1

      TDP of N150 is 10W

      TDP of N150 is 6W: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/241636/…

It is nothing more than the N100 fabricated on a slightly improved lithography process. That being said they'll use a lot more than 6W if you push them.

      • +1

The TDP is usually adjustable in the BIOS. My N97 CPU in my GMKtec mini PC for example can be set to 8W, 10W or 12W TDP.

The minimum TDP setting is great for home labs use such as Home Assistant where you don't need a lot of processing power. My N97 running Home Assistant bare metal idles at 6.0W average with TDP set to 8W.

I would expect the N150 to get an even lower idle power draw since it is a bit more energy efficient than the N97 (assuming the TDP is set to the minimum value, 6W).

        • +1

Yes agreed. I've got a Beelink EQ12 that I use as a HTPC that is set to 25W, and a passively cooled Mele Quieter 4C used for emulation.

I don't recommend increasing base power on passively cooled devices, it actually makes the performance worse.

  • Can it stream and output 4k@120Hz on USB-C? I'm looking for something to run NVIDIA GeForce NOW on my TV.

    • +2

The listing says 8k 60hz over USB C…
However intel says the n150 can only do 4k60.
Guess we will never know which one is true.

I am looking for a reasonably priced client for moonlight at 4k 120 myself.
Honestly its looking like one of the better options is a used Xbox series S.
Not sure if that helps for Geforce Now though.

      • Yeah, I am confused about this one. 8K/60Hz over USB-C / DP alt-mode in the listing, but according to Intel N150 Specs Page(intel.com), it states max resolution for Display Port is 4096 x 2160@60Hz (4K/60Hz).

  • Can this be used with windows 11 and run some business software 24 hours?

    • no, it's better suited to a low powered internet trolling station imho.

      • +10

        So good for JV?

    • it comes with windows 11 installed (though personally I would format and re-install), a potato can run business software but it won't run it well. What are you wanting to run? If it's heavy calculation based stuff then be aware this only has a 4 core CPU, single channel RAM (so it is intentionally slowed down by Intel) and a limited PCI bus which limits NVME access speeds. I've been using mine for web based daily email, youtube, browsing and MS O365 tasks for over a year now and I've been happy enough with it.

      • Wanting to use an ecommerce program that collects the order from different platfoms and i place the order theough chrome then import that order number.
Not that heavy software. But require to run 24 hours without a physical monitor and teamviewer or chrome remote desktop for remote in.
Would this be slow for what i am tying to achieve?

        • +1

sounds like it should be fine to me.. just an automated agent.. it's not like it's running cinebench 24/7 or anything. At worst keep an eye on Amazon for discounted Intel n100 mini pcs, but one from there - if you don't like it, return it for full refund.

      • If want to format and reinstall windows do this would you be able to somehow use the existing license or key for the windows or would you need to purchase separately?

        • +1

I never tried it, but some have said if you autheticate once with a microsoft account it'll tie the windows 11 key to the hardware, so if you re-install it'll remain licenced.

Personally I have three of my intel mini PCs all running linux, one is running a self made Windows Tiny 11 (Windows with just about everything stripped out, it runs in just a few GB of RAM and SSD space - no Edge, no intrusive MS stuff etc.) and I already had a Windows 11 Pro key unused which I then used.

  • +1

I have had one for a month now. Running Linux Mint with Jellyfin server and pi hole. Works great for my use case.

  • +2

Don't know why I got one, but I got one.

    • -3

Let us know when regret sinks in :)

      • +4

Probably quite a few years ago when I thought I'll try out being an adult…… it hasn't been going well.

        • Haha, I think the people who neg'd me must be in the same situation.

I mean at least you have your own money. But with money comes responsibility lol.

          • +1

@Dreamcast: Weird thing to neg people for.

Whereas I'm all about the adult money without the adult responsibility, LOL. Like last night, got bored, wasn't tired yet, started pricing up a overseas holidays….. I need an adult.

          • @Dreamcast: I'm assume you were downvoted for thinking someone would regret buying one of these things. Once you buy one - you typically want to buy more. If you don't have a use for one, you'll soon think of something to do with it.

  • +1

Around $142 with 19% cashback from Topcashback. For a cheap Plex Movie Video Server / NAS Server, plug in a 3.5" hard drive with Terabytes of storage using a cheap USB to Sata powered cable for $20. Like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CGZWVYYP?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…

    • what I put movie in Movie video Server or nas server??

      • +1

If you have one then use it, OP is posting if you have no NAS for a cheap storage alternative.

  • Ordered on CC in USD and came to $170.
Contacted seller but they advised it only comes with an EU plug for the 12V 3A plug. Will need to get an adaptor or i'll probably just end up using a USB-C to power the device.

    • +1

Device just arrived, looking good. It came with an EU power adaptor and a US adaptor.
Ended up ordering a AU 12v 3A plug that Gan posted above as he stated it's been working with his N100 for a while.
      https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006770868832.html

Will play around tonight and look at installing proxmox as leaving Windows11 seems like a resource killer.
Want to use it for Home Assistant and some old game servers (>20yrs).

      • Mine arrived today and I went to Jaycar to get a new adapter. Another $40 but not risking it, got something that is approved electrically by an Australian standard organisation.

        • +1

If you can back up drivers and share, that would help those of us who wiped them clean :)

          • @oleglap: Happy to help if I get told how?

Normally I get Windows to download all the necessary drivers, when I clean install.

          • +1

            @oleglap: @oleglap

Go to Device Manager, right-click the devices that need drivers, select Properties, go to the Details tab, change the Property dropdown to "Hardware IDs" - an example value is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9A49

Paste all Hardware IDs here (I only need the VEN_ and DEV_ for each device), and I'll link you the drivers you need.

            • @Nom: I have no sound after clean install.
              Hardware ID is
              PCI\VEN_8068&DEV_54C8&SUBSYS_F00002F3&REV_00
              PCI\VEN_8068&DEV_54C8&SUBSYS_F00002F3
              PCI\VEN_8068&DEV_54C8&CC_040100
              PCI\VEN_8068&DEV_54C8&CC_0401

              • +1

@iimech: I have done clean install.
CCleaner finds all the drivers easily enough. Yes it is paid but I already have it and you can get annual for multiple PCs for $10-20 well worth it.

          • +4

            • @Ratheart: Thank you so much Ratheart, you've helped quite a few of us!

  • I was looking at a Beelink S12 Pro or S13, but I now wonder if this will be better/cheaper for plex, this is a dilemma. Is SOYO a good brand?

      They are an established brand

Yes Soyo is cheaper but not an inferior product. I’ve got the N100 from previous deal and run Proxmox on it. This would be a step up at this price. If you’re on the fence about getting one, do it.

Just be warned if you start running promox, you’ll be going down a rabbit hole.

      • Thanks for the reply, i ended up.buying it. I plan on jumping down the rabbit hole, I'm not a linux user myself but will be fun to explore, test, google everything i need to know.

This is a gateway drug to homelabbing
