Amir @ AudioScienceReview recommends these:

Conclusions
You have to shake your head when you see and read about the performance of this $25 IEM. It displays a level of performance with a bit EQ that is world class. Feed it some well recorded music and you are there: the pinnacle of high fidelity sound. I don't care if you don't want to use an IEM. Get one of these (or the original Zero) and get calibrated on what good sound is.

As to whether to get the zero or zero:2, I would say that with the above EQ, Zero:2 sounds more to my liking than the original 7Hz Zero. That one though sounds more correct without EQ. Your opinion may vary.

I am happy to recommend the 7Hz x Crinacle Zero:2 IEM.

More bass and less treble peaks / troughs compared to the original neutral-ish Zero - see the frequency response.

  • Yeah, I buyed. I will EQ it though, need to work out how but I will lol

    • will you be listening on a PC or mobile device?

      • PC, I can see there is a simple 2 band EQ that Amir made, and also a fancy one in the comment section. Should be very interesting to try them.

        • +11

Equalizer APO with Peace GUI is the best imo.

  • Does anyone know well these compare to the TRUTHEAR x Crinacle Zero:BLUE 2?

    • +1

(Note: I have no idea what I'm talking about, take this with a grain of salt)

A cursory look at the frequency response shows that the Zero:BLUE 2 is significantly more V-shaped and "fun" sounding.

I'd guess the Zero:BLUE 2 probably perform better in technicalities with two DDs compared to one, especially with the bass subwoofer.

Edit: Take it from the man who tuned both IEMs: the Zero:BLUE 2 is very Harman-compliant compared to his personal preferences in the Salnotes Zero 2.

  • Don’t know wtf these are, but I bought them. For my steam deck and iPhone. Any hints for me?

    • +2

I want to play steam deck on metro (40 minutes each way) would you recommend it for that?

      • +2

For sure. It’s a great device. I’m not interested in playing AAA titles handheld. I play things like dead cells, hades, balatro, slay the spire. Can’t sit at my pc and game anymore just chill on the couch gaming handheld and also on the metro, waiting at the barber, at my mrs parents place lol. Wherever really.

    • They're earbuds with good sound for cheap
If you want to finnick around with how they sound, you can use an equaliser to equalise (EQ) them

  • +12

Cheaper on Aliexpress, $23.92 and free shipping for Blue no mic ($27.02 on checkout). https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006868801230.html

Can also get the KZ ZS10 PRO X for $38.43 on checkout, very nice price considering I purchased them for $46 the other day. https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006335117896.html

Everyone seems to pile on them these days compared to the Zero 2s. I was originally going to opt for the ZS10 Pro Xs too (as I like a more V-shaped soundstage myself) but the ear fatigue from the very sharp, piercing treble is apparently quite noticeable on the Pro Xs and the build quality of the KZ series in general is quite hit and miss with a lot of people complaining about the fit of the rubber tips.

      • You can go for ZS12 PRO X which solves that issue.

  • +3

Not sure how much one should trust reviews from Amir.

    • +1

Me neither, but they seem ok for measurements at least (and OzBargain loves the quote).

Resolve from The Headphones Show (who do not sell these specific IEMs) states in their review

If you're looking for good value in audio, this should be high on that list.

They mention they experienced fit issues - that "it might be fine for the majority of the population" but wasn't great for them.

    • +2

Amir's reviews are just 'academic', and he's using charts and measurements to analyze equipment, for distortions, SNR, etc.
With his pedantic approach, you can learn some things, but I don't like to get lost in only numbers which does not always capture the musicality of something.

There are people who use audio gear to listen to music, and there are those that use music just to test the audio gear !

    • +4

his "review" is basically just a suite of measurements, and then rating the IEM according to how close it is to Harman's target

if you keep this in mind, I don't really see much to distrust

      • +1

Better than some golden ear's opinion anyway.

Reproducing a digital signal as faithfully in analogue as possible is surely the goal for any audio product and that's what he is measuring.

    • +3

ASR is as good as it gets IMO, a scientific approach to audio. I have purchased DAC and amps based in the sites data, it's very helpful for budget hardware.

  • Tempting but I alr got 5 earphones lol

  • +1

If I didn't have the Hexa's already I probably would jumped on these.

  • Pretty good IEM but definitely change the cable if you can since the stock cable is pretty bad.

  • Thanks Op

  • Do this need an amp to get the best sound or will audio straight out of a PC soundcard still sound better with these?

    • +2

This absolutely does not require an amp due to it being an IEM.

This only has a single DD so you won't get any significant issues with sound quality from a mobo like the Zero:BLUE 2, but an Apple dongle or other similar DAC might help, especially if you hear noise with mobo audio.

  • Do these need to be tuned for use on iPhone? (16 Pro, if that makes a difference)

    • +2

No, should be plug and play given you have a 3.5mm to USB C adapter.

  • Cheaper on AliExpress… Around 14.54 USD + GST.

  • New to IEMs… How do they compare to headphones for gaming?

    • +1

This guy review IEM for gaming.

      https://www.youtube.com/@FreshReviewsYT/videos

For IEM it's better to invest in more expensive one for gaming as they provide more imaging.

I personally use simgot supermix 4 and I can tell a huge difference in comparison to my sennheiser HD58X in term of details and imaging.

I feel you need to invest a lot more money if you wanted to get better headphones in comparison to IEM.

  • +1

There are a lot of good deals with the current aliexpress sale for chifi IEM. But be warned, once you get into the IEM rabbit hole there is no going back.

Also it's better to do a bit of research on the tuning before buying IEM as they follow different tuning (e.g. Harman, neutral, meta tuning, etc) as some people are more sensitive towards certain area of the frequency (e.g. treble sensitive).

And changing tips can change the sound of the IEM drastically.

  • +3

The version with a mic is just $4.71 more: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0DLB3GFBF

As with most wired IEM's these days, the mic is surprisingly good.

    • Thanks, might get these to replace my work Jabra headset.

  • Good pair of buds to get into IEMs, just don't fall down the rabbit hole.

You'll get these, then hear that Moondrop Chu II is great, then you're opening a package with a pair of Simgots, KZs, Cadenzas, Truthear Hexas, Tangzu…
