Airlines Are Starting to Ban The Use of Power Banks on Flights

Airline power bank ban: Singapore Airlines joins Eva Air, China Airlines in banning popular chargers

Do economy seats have chargers or am I screwed for my flight next month?

The issue is the dodgy cheap ones

    • But how can someone afford a flight but not a reputable power bank?

I take it you've never hung around the Jetstar terminals?

        • jetstar made it affordable for the bogan scum of society to leave their state

Dunno what airline you are using, whether the USB Port (if available) in your seat works or not, if it is USB-A or USB-C.

Charge it up before you go go…

  • In the airport waiting areas see if you can find a power point so you can top up during stopovers.

FTFY. We can still take them on board at least.

The newer Qantas planes having USB and USB-C in economy has been a blessing. ANA and JAL had AC in economy too.

    • My last 3 flights, none of the 4 sockets on either side of my seat (3x4 = 12 stickers) worked

    Raw Dawg it ;)

Are you flying Singapore Airlines and what did they say when you asked them?

    • The SIA flights I've taken from Sydney in recent years have had slow usb-a ports, and AC sockets at floor level (I didn't use these).

Doesn't that go against the Charter of Human Rights?

It's not a chartered flight. It's regular commercial.

So isn't it against the Commercial of Human Rights?

Doesn't seem like an issue even on international flights.

I'm the sort of person who brings their tablet and watches movies/TV shows and have never had battery issues personally. Unless you're literally watching the entire time I fail to see how a decent modern device would run out of battery.

Maybe a steam deck? But still, you can just bring a book or similar and be fine. Take a break from always being on your electronics.

  • Flew China Southern recently and they were going around telling people to stop using powerbanks. Even in economy the entertainment screens had a USB-A charging port and there were also AC sockets below each seat so it wasn't a big issue.

  • same issue with garuda

  • Never really felt the need to use my bank when I flew last. Plenty of charging options provided by the planes. But I can imagine if you flew Scoot or similar you'd be out of luck.

Who are you flying with? Generally the itinerary page will say if they do or not. If not, lookup the flight code and then plane being used.

  • Who gives a shit. I'll still charge my devices inside my bag where they can't see it.

Made up issue. People have been flying all this time and they do this now.

Didn’t have this problem on my QF1 A380 trip yesterday

    Typical airline logic.
Response to a powerbank catching fire in an overhead locker - you can't use powerbanks anymore, but can still put them in the overhead locker.

    • This was my thought too, it wasn't caused by using it but it combusted in the overhead locker. How is banning people using it on-board going to prevent overhead space combustion? Doesn't make sense.

Also if the powerbank was in the luggage space below, would have it combusted there?

They've long been banned from check in luggage, because they can catch fire there and it is worse because it is inaccessible.

  • I flew china southern back to Australia and they said in-flight we cannot use the powerbanks….. But reading the article, the powerbank combusted in the overhead space, so I don't understand why using it would be a problem?

While we're at it, just ban anything with a battery……… end of
