Well, pretty much any comment from jv could encompass all of those criteria at any given time… :)

    • +4

JV always makes me laugh. I always look forward to his comments. Sometimes i think he should get a salary from ozbargain or make a blog or something.

      • +5

JV's style of commenting is essentially post 100 comments a day and hopefully 2% might be funny….

        • Shotgun approach, I like it…

  • It's fine if you want to discuss comments but let's refrain from attacking anyone here.

    • I'm not sure how you can point to a comment and say it was the worst or most annoying without attacking the author.

Perhaps this should be limited to Best/Most insightful/longest/most researched/funniest?

    • Nobody is attacking anyone neil, it's all in good humour…as I've openly stated many times in the past, I enjoy jv's comments as much as anyone, and I'm sure he'll agree with the above. As a matter of fact it could apply to any of us at many points in time!

Like, I know you mods love to sin-bin me in particular for even veiled references to other users, but let's give the heavy-handedness a rest for 2013 eh? ;)

      • You continue to fail to understand your comments have consequences. People don't come here to be attacked and bullied. It's not me trying to censor you, its us responding to complaints. And while your motto may be suck it up and people should not be so sensitive, you should be aware that we don't truly know the people behind these accounts. Some are younger, some may come to here to escape a tough reality, be mentally unbalanced, or they possibly could have thick skin. We just don't know. So maybe in 2013, we all can treat each other respectfully. Cmon we're professionals. ;)

Well put. It's amazing how the disconnect between real human contact and online contact gives some people an empathy lobotomy. Of course there is no telling that those with little patience or harsh attitudes might not be exactly the same if you met them face to face. Pointing out where you think someone is in error really doesn't require much personal comment. I often read comments that seem very poorly thought out but who of us hasn't spoken ill-advised words from time to time? A poorly expressed opinion may be because someone is lazy, they don't have the skills to make themselves understood any better or they don't understand the topic. None of this means anyone else has the right to disparage them even though it may be tempting. Is being the jerk who belittles someone's error or the pedant who corrects spelling and grammar any less annoying than the poster who made the mistake? If having a joke is your thing that's fine however a little introspection is required if you are only able to make it at someone else's expense. For example, if you think I'm just a bag of hot air, don't read my posts… I can imagine I'm contributing and others can avoid the verbosity… win-win. On the other hand if you chose to insult me I might spend the day kicking puppies or … being an a$$ to my co-workers or … harming myself or … stop sending lotion down the well… :D

        • Well said Neil.It is the case (i hope) that some here don't understand the the basic equation of every action having an equal and opposite reaction…..although i do believe a number of users here JUST DON'T CARE.

        • +1

          Again well said Neil ..I don't post often ..but I did do a post about ham I had bought for Christmas lunch ..in the replies there was one rude comment but another member jumped in very quickly to correct the the person (Thanks Charlie }
I must admit I was a bit hesitant about posting as prior to my post a man had asked a question about shoes ..and to put it mildly some of the replies were very rude .
To me and I am sure many others OzBargain is a great resource and independent from the large companies
To Neil and the rest of the OzBargain crew thank you

        • Hi seawench, if you're thinking of the thread I'm thinking of, the initial post by that person re shoes was written in a way which people found offensive.. it was subsequently edited by the poster and made the earlier replies appear pointless/redundant.. it did also produce some very odd, even more offensive comments which were quickly negged off the view.

I've found many, if not most, ozBrs to be quite thoughtful and open-minded - quick to protect a fair and tolerant community, as you had experienced re your ham thread.

        • That's another very good point. Forums that allow deletion or editing of posts/comments can make you look like a ranting lunatic if the OP/comments are dramatically edited. It's happened to me a few times. Another good reason to try for balance in your responses.

        • No neil, it is you that fails to understand…many users here are given a significant degree of latitude that others are not…this is not a phenomenon that is particular to myself, others have also noted the inconsistent moderation in the past. I've been penalised for some pretty innocuous crap in the past, and I've seen far worse completely unmoderated. To emphasise this, I've just reported a comment that is far more scathing than the most recent one I was sin-binned for…I'll be watching that space…

Why don't we all make consistency our new years resolution then, eh? ;)

        • +1

          My take:

1: consistency with moderation is HARD. Apart from the fact that there are multiple moderators, people are not perfect and have different mental states on different days.

2: 'I've been penalised for some pretty innocuous crap in the past, and I've seen far worse completely unmoderated'. This is an example of why moderation is hard, this is an opinion, not fact. Maybe in some of these cases this opinion is pretty well substantiated, maybe not.

3: It really comes across as childish to say 'other people get away with stuff, so I am going to misbehave to!'. Try taking the high ground?

Maybe it's your moniker StewBalls? You stand out like … well … balls! It gets you noticed. If you were abc987 you would be more anonymous. Without wanting to single you out I definitely notice your comments, some of which are great contributions … maybe we aren't the best judges of our own behaviour? Just because I know my comments are intelligent and insightful doesn't mean they are read that way :D

It really comes across as childish to say 'other people get away with stuff, so I am going to misbehave to!'.

That was never what I intended to say Bruce…all I'm saying is that it seems that there is a significant disparity between the way many users are treated. And that I'm also not alone in this, and let me assure you, the offence for which I was most recently PB'd was very soft indeed.

          Try taking the high ground?

Easier said than done at times, you should know this quite well yourself! ;)

I do suspect that, as you rightly say, mods are only human and perhaps tend to perceive many things through the biased lenses of past transgressions with many users, myself included; and act more harshly than necessary…or indeed how they would deal with other users for the same offence. Look, I won't deny that I've been an ass at times in the past; but I sincerely feel that prior bad behaviour should not necessarily influence the way mods view current behaviour.

Now, rightly or wrongly (and I'm happy to admit when I'm wrong), that's just how it feels sometimes…I've said my piece, so I won't belabour the point any further. It is noteworthy that the comment which I had reported seems to have been dealt with appropriately, and indeed with good humour by neil (given the nature of my report & his reply)…kudos!

I also suspect that bigpallooka may have something there…perhaps I've painted a target on my…well, balls! :)

A comment that made me chuckle was from daveaus on this thread

"If you look at Australian news you will see there has been iphone 5 case riots, several people have been killed. One of my competitors maliously spread a rumour that my store has cases and people have now surrounded my store demanding a case, the crowd is getting increasingly violent and Im concerned for my safety. Please send as many cases as you can, the situation on the ground here is desperate."

  • Just ran a query against the database:

Whenever I see a deal for a computer I always remember "can Balls build it cheaper?" heh..

I'll nominate this zinger from jv.

      • yes indeed, short, sharp & to the point!

    • Just for giggles would you mind re-running that query for the most negative voted comments?

Misuse of Bought and Brought are always goodies.

    • Sorry! Unintentional neg while scrolling down the side of my S3 to read this thread. My bad. Mods, please revoke.

I would vote for the guy who wanted more RAM in his Ainol.

    • Atleast he didn't wanted more processing horsepower in it

  • There is a thread in the site discussion with Tyler.durden having a strong argument about the misuse of negative votes, then Neil linked him to a deal where Tyler.durden voted against a deal. Which apparently is one of the most negative voted comments on this website. Gave me a little laugh.

    • Actually, the funny thing about that thread is the incongruity of writing veritable essays on why it's too hard to write a comment. If you can wait to get back to your PC to write hundreds of words on why you can't use the neg voting/comment system on your hand held device then you can just wait to get back to your PC to do your neg voting/commenting. Just use your hand held to check the bargains.

  • Dick's myth… still makes me laugh!

IMO the funniest thread of 2012 was the Grand Cuvee for $1,000 and opasx had the best line "what advantages does this champagne have over say a train….which I could also afford".
