Selecting a Router with HFC nbn

I’m currently using an NBN hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) connection, and I have a network termination device (NTD) installed at my place. This NTD connects to the modem router I’ve been using for a while now. However, I’m looking to upgrade my router and am considering the Eero 6+.

My main question is: Can the NTD plug straight into the back of the Eero 6+ and work without any issues, or is there something specific I need to be aware of when selecting a router for use with the HFC NBN connection? I’m not entirely sure if the Aero 6+ is compatible or if there are other routers I should be considering instead.

If the Eero 6+ isn't a good option, could anyone recommend other routers that are known to work well with a network termination device for HFC NBN? I’d appreciate any insights or advice based on your experiences.

  • Yeah the eero 6+ router is compatible with nbn HFC and plugs into the nbn NTD box.

How fast is your nbn plan?

    • It's a 100/20 connection. Do you happen to know if Google's Nest routers would also work fine?

      • Google Nest Wi-Fi is also compatible.

My go to recommendation is always the Asus RT-AX86U Pro. I've been using the older, non-Pro variant (on HFC NBN) for years and it is absolutely rock solid. Extremely large 2.4Ghz wifi range and the 5Ghz is strong as well. Probably the best router of it's class that I've used in a long time. 10/10 can recommend.

    • Do you use custom firmware .. e.g. Merlin, or stick to stock?

RT-AX86U_PRO is listed on Merlin's supported models.

        • Yep for sure, I probably wasn't clear enough - my question is if his 10/10 experience of the router is with the stock firmware or with a custom firmware (such as Merlin).

@noz: 10/10 experience is with the stock firmware. I've personally found no need to re-flash it to the Merlin firmware, although I know it's really good, in it's stock/factory firmware, it just works really damn well.

  • You can use any router with HFC.
Just remember in 6 months your NBN plan will probably go to 500/50.
