AmEx Credit Card for Churners - Yay or Nay?

Hi fellow churners! I've only had one AMEX card 5 years ago. I've been churning other cards 2-3 times per year since then. Recently I've read a lot of comments in CC threads that AMEX declines churners. What I couldn't figure out is do they decline AMEX card churners or based on number of enquiries for all CC? Could we please also have a small poll to figure out if recent churners were successful with AMEX CC applications? Appreciate it.

Unless you need to maintain your credit score just apply anyway?

    • I'd rather save one extra enquiry on my file if I can. Would be also nice to help others with making this decision looking at the poll results

My experience was I held 3 AMEX cards in the past without issue (~2014 onwards), churning every year or two. In the meantime, I was applying for NAB/ANZ etc. and churning many other cards without issue.

After about 2019 I started getting rejected and I've applied maybe 3 times since then and always get rejected.

Not a strong point either way - could be a new system they introduced around then to detect churners, or could be because I held the card and kept cancelling in past.

Might be worth understanding for those rejected have they held an AMEX card previously.

    • Good idea! Updated after 8 votes have been casted already. Please revote as required if you're one of them.

Ive had numerous amex cards (explorer, qantas ultimate, velocity platinum, discovery, business platinum), I generally apply within a month of being eligible for the bonus rewards points.

Never been knocked back yet, I very much churn, soon as I get the bonus and use up any other perks, its gone

Citibank (NAB now) on the other hand, i've always had issues with them, probably a 50/50 strike rate

  • I've had AMEX, ANZ and St. George rejected. Prior to this, churned heavy with no rejections, no interest paid and cancelled as soon as bonus points given. Only ever had one card active at a time.

  • AMEX declines churners

    They do…

    Why wouldn't they?

I'm a regular churner (4 cards in 2024) with no open credit cards and got rejected (3rd time rejected).

The next day, my wife (much lower take home income) (1 card in 2024) with 1 open card got accepted.
