    This is sacrilege!

But I am also very keen to try it.

    • Could be dry if right ingredients are not used

      • +6

The bread will be too soft or stale, instead of the fresh crunchy version you get from real Vietnamese bakeries.

        • or soggy and mushy with all the sauces soaked into it.

    • -3

Normally, I would also be curious to try this out, but not at this price. Especially when I can get top quality cheaper banh mi in Sunshine (Fresh Chilli Deli).

      • +6

I never knew that Sunshine was in the Newcastle area, NSW

        • +1

Pending nationwide roll out, if the trial is successful.

          • +3

@thangcuoi: It clearly isn't an authentic top tier banh mi, so I don't know why you are comparing it to one. I don't think it's intended to compete against one either. Not sure we saw people complain about KFC Nachos or KFC HSP being authentic, or that their specific local ethnic joint has a superior product.

At the moment it's a trial and it could very well not succeed or go further, so there's no point getting ahead of yourself.

If it gives another somewhat tasty option at the Dirty Bird, then I'm all for it, especially when there is a Dirty Bird every ~10min drive or less. There's only so many Wicked Wing and Zinger deals that I can eat.

          • @thangcuoi: Where does it say that? Ill be keen if what you say is true. Or is this "trust me bro"?

      • Luke's one in Moonee Ponds is fantastic at this price.

But anyways irrelevant to the discussion as not in NSW.

      • I think Selina's in Sunshine is better IMO. Has better ingredients, pate and butter.

        • We tried Selina once, were not impressed with their xiu mai. They were hard and tough like the grill meatball. They should be soft enough to break apart and spread with a the back of a spoon. We never went back after that.

The shredded lettuce put me off. They do not belong in Vietnamese banh mi.

I had the impression that their setup and offering was more catered toward the Aussie's clientele.

    • Mmm… sacrilicious <drool>

    What’s Newcastle got that we don’t ?

    • +9

Only the biggest KFC in the southern hemisphere

      • +12

And people say the Hunter region has no culture

      • Which one?

        • The CBD store in Hunter St

    • +4

I remember reading that a lot of companies like to test their products in Newcastle as it's easier to control and has an isolated environment typical of the national market..

      EDIT: Article from SMH

      • +3

        And easy to quarantine ?

      • True. Leisure and Allied used to do that in the 80s with arcade machines.

      • Has anything in Newcastle been tested and actually released nationwide though?

Seems we just get random KFC stuff for a month every now and again

        i only pay for 7- 7.5 :P

        • +1

Up from ~$4.5 from slightly further back

          • +1

@vawiyoci: Up from ~$2 from even further back

            • @drezy: Just funny that it feels like it was $4 locally seemingly forever before all of a sudden nearly doubling everywhere to $7+ (disregarding the ridiculous $10 outliers lol), like that old adage about bankruptcy being 'slowly at first then all at once'. Good ol' 8% inflation really did a number on food eh.

            • +1

@drezy: It wqs $2.30 at one point right?

              • @ATTS: Yeah when I first moved to Melbourne in early 2000s that's roughly about right

            • +1

@drezy: 1998, my first job, I was working for Qantas. Mascot Bakery used to do a chilli chicken roll for $2. This was before we knew what a banh mi was. Always got extra chilli.

              True story.

      • +3

I've been eating them from Sunshine and St Albans my entire life, I've never called them a Pork roll until they became the new "in" thing and i still refuse to.

        • -2

How do you differentiate from the traditional "mystery meat" bahn mi to say chicken or dimsum variants?

          • +6

@krisspy: Does the lady serving me have drawn on eyebrows and look like she wants to kill me?

      • +6

It was called a pork roll to accommodate a population that didn't speak or read Vietnamese.

Being exposed to other cultures and learning their language is a good thing!

      • It was always a banh mi… they just called it a pork roll for the white fellas.

Prices of Banh Mi has been creeping up in recent years, some nearing/over $10 now…

      • +1

        chuc man nam moi

      • nearing? I paid $16 for one in Warringah Mall (NSW) the other day. But that's on me :(

    • in perth you can easily fork out 10-12 for one

      • Around $7 in morley and they're great mate

        • $9.50 for roast pork at Bite My Bahn Mi in Morley - which is the gold standard in that area. A bit cheaper at Coventry Village but not as nice (and parking can be horrible there at times). A bit out if the way but my pick in the Perth area is MCQ in Mirrabooka - $7.50 for the roast pork but I go for the extra meat at $9.50.

I'm off to Vietnam next month so looking forward to giving their BM's a crack.

          • @R4: bite my bahn Mi,is pretty good,I never knew it had gone UpTo that price! Yes the markets one was the one I was thinking, parking sure can be a drama!haha, MCQ Coventry markets does them now too, might get to try theirs out this weekend!

      • my local used to do a passable banh mi at $8, they recently jacked it up to $12

        sad times

    • +7

A good banh mi is absolutely worth $10, considering the prices that people pay for a sandwich or focaccia at a cafe.

    • $10 for a banh mi

Pretty normal these days, $9-12 is the normal.

THIS IS NOT THE BANH MI OF MY PEOPLE.

    • +9

I agree. It just isn’t the same unless it’s served up by a mature aged Vietnamese lady with some perfectly tattooed eyebrows and you feel obligated to always say yes when she ask do you want extra chilli.

        • -4

Fish sauce mate. But no, fish sauce isnt used in Banh Mi

          • +2

@jjjones: Nah, we do use fish sauce. Shredded pork skin roll must have fish sauce, soy sauce does not work in this case. BBQ pork roll is good with fish sauce as well. Try next time.

      • I feel more obligated constantly looking what she's putting in my pork roll, will she exclude what I told her and same for what i said to include. Ah, those ladies, frustrating.

        • They're trying to get rid of you. They can't be bothered with your order when they're going to run out of pork by end of day anyway

As a Vietnamese, this offends me.

    • Non-Vietnamese Asian. Curious what KFC has decided to call "Vietnamese Sauce".

      • maybe hosin sauce.

    • +1

As a not Vietnamese, I'm also offended

    • KFC in Vietnam do pizza and pasta. Thoughts on your people doing this?

  • +2

    Do they offer extra coriander?

    • From the photo, it looks like they just used the Crunchy Slaw instead of the properly Picked Carrot and Cucumber. No chance for coriander or fresh chilli.

      • It has coriander, chilli and cucumber on it, they call it banh mi slaw, im thinking of getting a couple for lunch

        • Please report back once you have had it. Would love to get a few opinions from fellow OzBargainers.

@thangcuoi: I had it, my review is below, they didnt make it properly, i might get another one from a different store tomorrow and compare, it was tasty, but not made right

  • What's "Vietnamese sauce"?

    • Tomato sauce = sauce made of tomatoes.

      Sauce made of Vietnamese?

      @BewareOfThe Dog u gotta!

maybe even review it in the car, greg's kitchen style.

      • +1

        I would love to.

Only issue is I have a Seafood Allergy, and Vietnamese Food usually has shrimp and/or Fish Oil in it.

When I lloked at the Allergen guide, it has N/A in those sections.

Also, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year. This meant a lot of changes. Funnily enough, KFC chicken does not create any spikes compared to other foods, but I have avoided the Burgers :(
I also found I can eat Pizza (only 4 pieces at a time) from a local Pizza place, not too mention Kebabs. Guzman Nachos were okay (not so much the Brekkie Buritto).
My worst spikes were Subway Footlongs.

That guy looks weirder than Me, though my beard is longer. LOL.

        • subway

Not surprised, the ‘bread’ is more like a cake with the sugar in it lol

@Jimothy Wongingtons: A friend of mine worked for TipTop @ 10 years ago, and they supplied takeaway places in the area. He said there was no way he would eat at Maccas, HJ's, Subway etc.

Someone said to me recently, Yeast works better with Sugar.

Someone said to me recently, Yeast works better with Sugar.

Yes… but superfast growing yeast doesn't make for good bread. The gluten needs time to develop. I suppose we are talking about TipTop sponge bread though
