Need a New Yearly Mobile Plan

Hello, I usually get a yearly plan and it's running out soon,

However, this year I will be overseas I don't need roaming, but I need to be able to receive messages for banking etc, I'll be in Southeast Asia (mainly Vietnam and Thailand).

Does and one know what company will receive messages without roaming? Being on the Telstra network is a plus, thanks.

I'm on boost which is on the Telstra network and never had any issues receiving messages while I lived overseas. Helpful for 2 factor auths. But I wouldn't be surprised if there were cheaper options.

I'm pretty certain most providers will let you receive messages without Roaming charges.

'Being on the Telstra network is a plus'

Aldi mobile uses Telstra here in Australia and a $15 recharge will last you 1 year.

However, I'm not sure if Aldi's overseas providers are the same as Telstra's. Having said that I'm sure it will work to receive SMS's regardless of providers.

I believe ALDI does not use full Telstra network, whereas Boost does.

True, but if the purpose is to receive SMS overseas, it doesn't matter because there's no Telstra network overseas.

I believe ALDI does not use full Telstra network, whereas Boost does.

Won't make any difference when overseas…

I can confirm that is correct for Optus and Optus NVMOs
Fairly sure it also applies for Vodafone as well

  • I was able to receive SMS overseas (in taiwan) with vodafone 365 prepaid plan. The downside is it is vodafone.

Amaysim, $60 per year, no data.

CMIIW, thought $10 payg amaysim should suffice, and last a year too.. and can do roaming for $20 that last 12mths too

      • $10 payg amaysim should suffice

yep, if you don't need to make any calls.
        $60 is unlimited calls/sms

        • The Amaysim 10$ per year should do the same.

  • Telstra and resellers (not just Boost) will let you send SMS, make and receive calls as well, all without roaming, by using VoWifi.
You just need a local data connection, either wifi or 2nd SIM.

  • Boost mobile or Coles mobile IMO best options.

but again rest depends on your needs, like how much data you need, international calls/txt etc.

    • Using Coles, you definitely don't get text messages when travelling overseas.

      • may be changed then IDK

family did get otp from coles mobile like 3-4 years ago in Singapore airport

        • Spain, France, Italy and Japan didn't receive text messages on Coles in 2024.

  • OP, need a bit more info…

    • how much of the next year are you overseas and how much are you here (and in need of a local service)?
    • how much data do you used per year domestically usually?
    • will you be getting a local mobile service when overseas?
    • what mobile do you use?
  • I would get Felix mobile.
Currently you can get the lowest cost deal for $12.50pm, with no ongoing commitment, though I saw the $40 unlimited data pack for $15 at a supermarket last week.
Start the plan with your existing number, add the $20/4GB roaming package (which lasts a year) and then pause the local plan. The roaming plan will still work, you will be able to get texts OS and have some international data as a backup if you need it in both Thailand and Vietnam.
    They do eSIM too.
