Hang on, let me ask ChatGPT if this is a good deal.

    • +2

The deal on OzBargain mentions saving $20 USD per month on a ChatGPT Pro subscription by changing the billing address to a non-Australian one to avoid GST. It applies to both the $200/month and cheaper plans. This can be helpful if the subscription is worth it for your needs. You can review the deal here.

As someone who is capable of doing my day job without the use of AI, why would I need to pay for ChatGPT?

    • So it can do your night job, like your 'night family'

Deepseek R1 can literally be hosted by anyone, I don't see how this is a deal with the amount of competition currently in the market.

    • +6

Anyone? With 671B parameters, it needs over 1.3TB of VRAM, ie NVIDIA A100 80GB ×16)
      Those are $30K each.
So if you have half a million dollars, you can run inference.

Ok, it is possible to run the full model on a lower budget, but at a few tokens per second, you will need to be patient.

      • +6

I was referring more to the fact that it is open source and could be hosted by external providers like Perplexity.

There's also a dynamic 1.58bit quantization of R1 that will run on significantly less RAM than the full fat model, although that it is still out of reach for many.

      • +1

You can run it on any PC with 32GB RAM, don't even need a GPU: https://unsloth.ai/blog/deepseekr1-dynamic

It will be seconds per token rather than tokens per second, but anyone can.

      • +1

8GB VRAM is enough to use the 7B model

        • +3

There's a world of difference between what a 7b model can do, what a 24b model can do, what a 70b model can do, what a 400b model or do.

The model's reasoning and recall is limited by its parameter size, quantisation will let you make trade-offs to run it on small memory and even AWG quants will work better too.

It depends what you are doing, but the only model I can run at home that's even remotely satisfied me is Mistral-Small-24b-2501 which requires 25gb of ram at Q8.

          • @Commodore64: The H100 cost around $40,000 each that has 80GB VRAM, I don't think I'd pay for that.

The difference in performance between different model sizes is indeed significant, and it's great that you've found a model that kind of works for you.
I'll have a look at the Mistral-Small-24b-2501 model.

It's important to note that smaller models are a great starting point for learning and experimentation.

            • +1

@Tollery: You’re right they are fun, and llama 3.2-3b performs better than it has any right to, especially with 120K context window.

Qwen-2.5-VL-3b is also punching above its weight too if you want a lightweight multi model that fits on 8gb of ram.

It’s just important to note that smaller models struggle with things like reasoning or even creating a full paragraph that’s free of repetitive elements.

Q6_K_M gives some pretty great results and you should be able to run mistral-small on a 16GB card.

For anyone with 12gb, I’d give Gemma-9B, or more likely any of its derivatives a go as it’s a bit dry if not fine tuned.

      • Deepseek R1 uses FP8 instead of FP16, therefore to run the full model in original quality needs approximately 671GB RAM for the weights plus a bit more for context.
Also, Deepseek R1 is a Mixture Of Experts (MOE) model, which is much less memory bandwidth intensive than regular models. It has 37B Activated Params, which means to generate one token requires reading approximately 37GB memory.
To host the full model yourself, the cheapest option is to buy a used server with 1TB RAM. If you go with an EPYC 7542 based server (around $5000 on ebay), you get around 200GB/s memory bandwidth, which gives you around 5 tokens/s. That's approximately normal human reading speed.

    • On Openrouiter you can use it and some others for free.

  • Ah, got it! Now I can save 10% on my OnlyFans purchases!

Chat GPT has this cheery feedback to this “deal”:

Lying about your billing address to avoid paying taxes is illegal and unethical. Engaging in fraudulent activity can have serious legal consequences, including fines and potential criminal charges. It's always best to comply with tax laws and regulations in your country or region to avoid any complications or penalties. If you're concerned about the GST or have questions about your tax responsibilities, it might be helpful to consult with a tax professional or accountant.

    • ChatGPT is so woke. Try Grok instead :-)

    • QWQ abliterated thinks it's a good deal

In conclusion, if you’re an Australian resident subscribing to ChatGPT and you want to save on GST, changing your billing address to a foreign address seems like a good strategy.
You can potentially save around $20 per month on the $200 plan or about $3 on cheaper plans.
Given that, it’s definitely worth considering, especially for those on higher subscription tiers.
I might give this a try myself to confirm the savings.

      • QWQ is also awesome. I'd love AI if it didn't scare the crap out of me.

      • Gave QwQ-32B a go, broke it with one question. now it won't stop telling me about itself.

      • +1

I will send the exact same question to the ATO along with a link to this "deal" to see if they have the same advice. Any wagers?

we can't minimise tax, that'd be illegal. and only one calling ChatGPT woke?

what's wrong with you overnight crew??

    • It’s tax evasion (illegal), tax minimisation (legal) would be to buy the sub with a GST registered ABN to legally not pay GST.

      • well it's all a matter of how good your accountant is.

        • It's not a profession people who are good at something tend to go into honestly.

  • I don't know if this still applies, it's been a while since I last subscribed to ChatGPT, but you can get a cheaper subscription from paying Apple iOS in-app purchase ($30AUD) versus the US price ($20USD/~$33AUD)

I generally just pay for the API these days and connect LibreChat to it. I picked up $10 of API credit in November and now down to about $2 left, and I use it pretty heavily (I don't use the o1 model)

Almost $4k per year for AI slop! Jesus christ what a scam. If you're using it this much I'm guessing your job will one of the first to be made redundant. Seems pretty sad to pay the robot before it shivs you.

Been using Grok 3 for a day and it is insanely good. I get DeepSearch to get the data, clarify with regular Grok and then once I am sure we understand each other, switch to Insight mode for Grok to spend a lot of time problem solving with the full data and context. Amazing results.

Constructed a full financial investment plan which considered tax brackets, debt recycling, interest rates, ETF holdings, growth/dividends, retirement plans, franking, real estate options (including suggested suburbs for growth (even considered Bris Olympic games)). It thought about it for minutes and showed all its considerations and came out with a fantastic plan.

    • -2

Been meaning to try Grok. I use Claude as I prefer the more natural language style it uses over ChatGPT, and doesn't seem as restricted / reluctant to discuss particular topics. Claude's been really handy for recipes…I tell it what I've got & it spits out some fantastic options, my family love it!

      • Enjoy hearing about the world according to Elon

The problem with recipes is it's either regurgitating a recipe they've already hoovered up, there are websites that already do the recipe thing without needing the huge processing power of AI to do it, although granted it is the kind of thing LLMs can be useful for.

          Space Man Bad!

Seriously though, it's wild even mentioning a passing interest in a particular product elicits responses like this (and the downvotes).

          • @Ham Dragon: You said you preferred less restricted, I just wanted to point out that it has been pretty blatantly manipulated.

If it doesn't bother you that it's Musk doing it, then that's great, but it's worth being aware of (to understand when you get garbage results).

If you're interested in the cheaper ChatGPT Plus plan, you can save a lot more than just GST by creating a Turkish Apple ID, funding it with gift cards from Turgame, and subscribing to Plus via iOS in-app purchase. TRY499.99 = AUD$23 per month, or about 30% less than the USD equivalent. (The Pro plan at TRY7999.99 per month is not worth getting from Turkey.)

  • I used to subscribe to 1 month free Gemini Advanced and keep rolling over using different Google accounts.
(Went away with that when I got 1 year free subscription with pixel 9 pro).

    • Interesting considering this. I pay $32.99/month currently. So that would be worth 396 off the price of the phone.
