Most of the regularly occurring Meross deals are back on.

    • +1

      Great Scott!

    • is this compatible with Tesla's homelink?

      • Almost certainly not. HomeLink uses RF signals, so it's much more likely to be compatible with your actual garage door opener (ie as an alternative remote) than a WiFi relay box like this.

      • Apple Watch is best, but if you have no desire for one then get a magsafe mount for the vent and then you can yell at siri to open the garage door.

(other option is to get a carplay unit, but those are fairly expensive and would be overkill just as a garage door opener.)

  • +5

I also bought one from last desl and love it.

    Compatibility Check

Their compatibility check website didn’t list my B&D garage opener. I emailed support but haven’t received a response. If you also can’t find your garage opener, I suggest just downloading their app and proceeding with the setup—the list there is more comprehensive.

  • +1

Does anyone a installation guide video?

  • Would this work on a Chamberlain Mr600

  • After a blackout all my smart lights turn on, anyone know what happens with these when the power comes back on? Wouldn't want it closing on something or opening at 2am.

    • +5

Had one of these for years, power has gone off plenty of times, zero issues.

      • -1

And I assume the worry about people standing at your front door shouting "OK GOOGLE OPEN GARAGE DOOR" should be ignored? heh

        • +6

Yeah, all voice commands require a PIN to activate, there's no way around it.

          • @Karl Pilkington: There's totally ways around it if you configure it certain ways

            • +1

@DJ: I would love to know how to configure it to not require a pin. When using voice commands on my phone to open garage, the phone needs to be unlocked and then I need to state the pin to open. I'm sure my neighbors know my pin code as I shout it into my headphones when I come back from walking the dog every day. I would accept any risk of not having a pin. Just having an unlocked phone is secure enough for my liking. Once in the garage the is a locked door someone would need to get through to gain access to my house

              • @DoIneedthese: I have the MSG200 model, one up from this one, which is HomeKit compatible.

You'll either need an Apple iPhone and/or Alexa in order to open it without a pin.

                • Add the garage opener to Meross and HomeKit.
                • On your iPhone in the Shortcuts app, add a shortcut to open the garage with a voice command.
                • Trigger the shortcut with your voice using Siri/Hey Siri command.

I haven't confirmed this but I read that if you have Alexa at home and link Meross with it, in your car via CarPlay, you can trigger the garage command from a button press.

Awesome device btw. I've had it installed at my parent's house for a year now and it works great.

                • @pogichinoy: Thanks. Unfortunately I use an android phone and all my smart home devices are connected to google home.

  • +1

With this installed, am I able to open the door when I am not connected to my wifi? i.e. im out at work?

    • Yes

    • It worked for me with homekit, but only when I added the homekit hub (Apple TV).
Without homekit hub (apple tv or homepod) it only worked within the same wifi network and was overall much less reliable.

You may be able to open it from the original app, without homekit integration, I have not tried.

    • Yes.

The Meross app allows you to open from anywhere.

Homekit requires a hub, otherwise it’s local only.

  • Is there a zigbee version available?

    • +1

Maybe contact Oz smart things and see if they can suggest an alternative to a Shelly 1 which is wifi only (not zigbee).

    • +1

Not via Meross, but it's ultimately just an expensive switch (closes the circuit of two pins), plus a door sensor (reed switch).

if you want a zigbee approach, you can buy both of those things and roll your own in HA

  • +1

I installed this a few months ago and closing the door works perfectly with okay Google. Opening the door only works about 1/10 attempts due to the pin code part messing up. When I try disable the pin code it says it won't work without one. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

    • +1

Experiencing similar issue. Try 2-3 seconds delay after Google asks for pin before quoting it. Found that greatly increase the success rate.
Also announcing the pin very clearly.

    • +1

With mine, I don't say each number of my pin code individually. For example, if my code was 5048, I'd say "fifty fourty eight".

      Works flawlessly every time.

  • -1

I was thinking of this but then wifey would say, we already got garage remotes isn't that good enough.
I dont know how to reply to her with this comment lol

    • +7

Ever worry you've left the garage door open? This kit includes a sensor that tells if you it's open or closed even when away on holidays!

      • -1

yes that is a positive but I guess if i was going away on holidays, I would have hoped and noticed that the garage door is closed before i leave the house

i wouldn't expect the garage door to open by itself when im away on holidays right?

        • Unlikely, but I came home to find the door opened a few times. I blamed it on my memory for few times before witnessing it open by itself in front of me. The motor was dying and had to be replaced.

    • +3

Those garage door remotes are pricey; so no more flimsy plastic remotes with deadly coin batteries

    • +4

I can open the garage door if I'm working in the garden / etc.

I can have it warn me if I leave it open at night or after people have left for work.

I can use Siri to open it when I turn into my street so it's fully open when I get home, as opposed to having to wait until I get quite close to use the remote.

If someone needs to pick something up or drop something off when nobody is home, I can have them call me when they arrive and open the door for them.

    • What if you don’t have the garage remote?

      • +1

If your main controller has two contact points for opening and closing the garage, it will be compatible. I installed mine next to the controller.

The app allows easy remote control over the internet, but it doesn’t support shared access. The only way to share control is by providing the username and password for my entire account, which was created using a throwaway email.

    • +3

These work in parallel to your garage door remotes not instead of. They’re another way of using the garage door. Plus they tell you the state of the door without physically checking it. If you have an Apple TV or hub plus Apple phones / watches you’ll love the convenience of it

  • +1

These are brilliant and I highly recommend. The best bit of me is having the garage door icon come up in Carplay when you get in the vicinity of your house.

Just make sure you have a dedicated 2.4ghz network for this to connect to.

  • Got this on the last deal and it's great. At first I didn't hook up the sensor so I had to say "hey google, close the garage door' to open/close and it was fine. Now after installing the sensor it works as wexpected except I hate the part where it asks you for a PIN as it takes too long or for some reason the PIN code part get's picked up and randomly plays on a google home speaker upstairs when I was spekaing in the lounge room.. weird. I get it's for security but having the option to turn it off would be ideal.

    • You discovered a solution yourself. disconnect sensor, add a routine enable by "Garage Door" to tell google to close garage door. Then "hey google, Garage door" would open/close it.
Doesn't seem worth avoiding security if it's direct house access

  • I had this but the wired sensor was a PITA
Changed to home connect which has a wireless sensor and much cleaner install
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/connect-smarthome-smart-garag…

    • When I was trying to get mine working, I was using homekit as the integration path into HomeAssistant. Ended up going with a different brand as the meross one wasn't playing nicely with with Unifi network gear. Tried a bunch of stuff but it just wouldn't work reliably, connections would usually time out. Alternate brand (tuya based one off Amazon) has been flawless ever since.

      • Did you try locking the wifi channel? This essentially fixed it for me with my unifi network. Prior to that it was randomly not responsive

        • Tried locking the channel, disabling optimisation, locking the device to different APs, firmware downgrades on APs, dedicated SSID just for the device, automated reboots, tech support from both Meross and Ubiquiti.

Gave up after all that, swapped the device out and it worked a treat.

My other Meross devices worked fine, just not the garage door controller. I've got a garage door controller on my parent's house which doesn't miss a beat, so was something with my network that it just did not get along with.

      • I have an asus router and had lots of issues with drop outs. I've added a second router in mesh and bonded the meross to that and things seem a lot better. A second unit I bought would drop out regardless so it got sent back.

        • it was connected to a Unifi UAP-AC-M literally 3 metres away from the device. I've got a separate AP on each floor of the house and tried it with all of them individually, same issue.

There's a known issue between the device and Unifi networks, I've linked to posts on the unifi website about it before, just can't find them right now

  • How would this compare to something like this @ Bunnings?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/orion-grid-connect-smart-garage-…

    • They are mechanically almost identical. This model is popular because it's one of the cheapest units with Homekit compatibility.

If you don't care about Homekit, there's a listing on the Amazon page for a cheaper non-Homekit version.

      • Gotcha, thank you.

  • I have been using this model within Home App around 2 years and works as expected. No issues so far. It was very easy to setup.

  • Should I use this for an outdoor gate? I have been using iSmartgate opener but the main unit has recently failed…

    • It should function okay, but the unit isn't waterproof. Do you have somewhere to install it where it can be protected from the weather, and still get a WiFi signal?

    • If your gate control board can power a Shelly 1 (wifi switch about $25) then I’d recommend that plus a reed switch $12. It’s cheap and reliable. Can be flashed with custom HomeKit firmware if you want it to be HomeKit native.

    • Thanks I have a weather proof box for the main unit, but obviously the sensor will be outdoor. No problem connecting to a power source & wifi. All these have been set up with the iSmartgate before.

      • +2

Let me know if you need any more info. There’s a Shelly group on FB and there is mountains of data and helpful people if you get stuck. The custom firmware was found on YouTube.

        • Hi Pretzel. Can you point me to the FB page? I might want to have a look about before deciding if I'll go the Meross or the Shelly option. Thank you in advance

  • Thanks OP, just ordered one.

  • Still waiting for an Apple TV sale so I can run it on home app again!
Used it for so long with the iPad! Was great

    • Get an old Apple TV 4 off marketplace.

  • Bought this MSG100 was good when it worked, then had connectivity problems. Tried smart plug to restart each day and connected to guest WiFi still flaky dropping in and out of signal. WiFi internal security camera next to it has no issues. I've returned to Amazon and bought the AU plug MSG200 from AliExpress for just under $40 (price went up the next day) will see how that goes as has an external antenna.

The recent firmware update has fixed the wifi drop-outs/disconnection for me. Firmware 4.2.19. It looks to me that this firmware update has increased the power requirements so if you have wifi connectivity issues after the update, change the power adapter with higher power output.

      • Great that it helped you, I got that firmware update not long before I sent the item back. Amazon return window was about to close so didn't spend more time trying to figure it out. Changing the power adapter with higher power output could have been the solution.

  • +1

    Same price all the time.

  • +2

I have this and also a Shelly one (new Shelly’s up to gen 3 now!) flashed with custom HomeKit firmware and I find the Shelly way more reliable. This might be down to my network (unifi) which for a while was making the Meross ‘not responding’ within HomeKit but since I’ve locked the wifi channel it’s been much better. I’ve not had a single issue with the $25 Shelly plus $12 eBay reed switch even after power blackouts.

For reference, the Meross is used on my garage door and the Shelly is used on my electric gate. The electric gate control board powers the Shelly by 24VDC from a spare set of DC power out contacts and the reed switch is wired in so the Shelly knows the open/closed state of the gate. The Meross is a good all in one solution with 240v AC power and reed switch included but just wanted people to know there are other cheap (and excellent solutions) out there that may be better for their situation

One more point - if people want to know if the Meross is compatible with their garage door, the Meross instructions suggest you find 2 spare contacts on your garage door circuit board and if you can ‘short’ them with the included wire and the garage door opens then happy days - you’ve found how the Meross will connect.

  • Is the "Home Kit" only an apple thing….?
Do I need this version for 'Google Home'?

    • No, for Google Home you can buy the cheaper non-Homekit version - it's linked on the same Amazon page.

  • Can I use this in conjunction with my normal garage remote/fob? It seems like a handy extra option, but I don’t want to remove the ability to open/close via my fob as well.

    • +2

Yes. It works in parallel with your garage remotes and has additional benefits like showing you the open/closed state of the door in apple home.

    • +1

These units are designed to mimic the behavior of a wired push-button to control the door. So they work nicely alongside the remote control fob

You can still install a wired button alongside the WiFi controller if you want that too - I've installed one and it's been quite useful.

  • If you are using the Wyze system of security cameras, they have a garage door remote that comes with a security camera for $89.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/WYZE-Garage-Remotely-Control-Two-W…

    • Shows $62.97 AUD for me. I think you left it in USD.

  • Is it better to get the single door version MGS100 or the 3 door version MGS200?

    • How many doors do you want to control?

      • 2 single doors.
        I was wondering if I should get 2 of MGS100 or 1 of MGS200.

Don't want too many wires hanging in the garage if the MGS200 has them.

  • I am using this device - its good but the meross app doesn't show up on my car play apps on my car's dashboard. Surprisingly I see zoom app on car play dashboard but not this App… Strange..

    • It should integrate into Apple home which is way better than the Meross app. You definitely bought the HomeKit version?

      • Yes mate, but did not try with Apple HomeKit since I don't have any apple devices apart from iPad and watch. Should I try a cheap Apple TV and setup Apple Home hub?

        • +1

You mentioned CarPlay so you have to have an iPhone too right??

When using CarPlay it automatically pops up as you get closer to your home to open your garage door. The baked in functionality is much more considered.

As for the Apple TV, yes I like mine and it means that the garage door will be openable outside your house wifi (ie over 4G/5G). You need to ensure it is gen 4 or greater. These can be had on marketplace for $70-100 or cheaper if you’re lucky/patient. Then you can add more devices to your Apple home if you wish later. You can add other family members to your Apple home too so they can have access to your devices too if you wish.

  • love using my Apple Watch to open and close garage, this for those runners and cyclist

  • So can this be setup/used without the Meross app and using their servers? Call be paranoid if you want but I won't trust a third party with a device that can remotely unlock my house.

    • +1

Homekit runs on a local server that controls devices using WiFi, so in theory you don't need the Meross app to control the device.

However, depending on the setup process you might need to create a Meross account and use their app to configure the device to link to Homekit on first use.

I am not sure if that's the case for this device as I don't use Apple devices and have no experience with Meross' setup processes. Hopefully somebody else can chime in with the details.

      • Cheers - I've read a bit more and seems you'll need the app (and an account …grrr) to do the initial connection and firmware update. After that, depending on the use case, internet connectivity is not required.

  • This need a plug to power it?

    • It has a USB-A cable for power. It's unlikely that your garage door has USB outlets, so you will probably need a basic "phone charger" style power adapter.

  • I know it’s not the intended purpose, but could it work for an electric sliding gate motor?

    • +1

Should work for any mechanism that can be controlled by a momentary button.

  • Hi, does anyone know if the other Meross is the same, the Meross store sells 2 of them, seems to be the same model and the other is $44.99
    https://www.amazon.com.au/stores/page/C1F93F2A-E674-4157-B8B…

    • Dearer one is HomeKit enabled

      • Thanks, we all have iPhones but we use Amazon echo devices at home, not sure if I should move to Siri instead.

        • I'd suggest getting the HomeKit version in case you decide to switch. I've seen many Amazon/Alexa users switching to HomeKit in various Reddit home automation subs. If you have Apple Watches and/or CarPlay you'll value the switch.

  • Do these things wire directly into the gate/door motor controller PCB (and therefore need to be next to the motor), or do you train them like a standard keyfob remote (and therefore can be a distance away) ?

    • +1

They're wired into the terminal block on the door opener and make a momentary short in the same way as a hard-wired wall-mounted button - if you have one?

      • No I have a gate with remotes, was wondering if this might work with it.

Now that I've had a chance to have a proper read I can see it wires in, but the wired sensor probably won't be very practical for my gate scenario.

Thanks for pandering to my laziness. :D
