        In general it is OK for you to install it as far back as you want, but we found people broke their phone, got a new phone, got their phone stolen, etc2

        So since there is actually no benefit in installing really early, we always recommend to install just before your trip.

  Have never used an eSIM when travelling before. I’m with Optus. How do I make sure Optus roaming doesn’t get automatically turned on? In the Optus My Account app, it says “If you have dual SIMs, you can turn off your Optus SIM temporarily in the Settings on your phone”. I don’t see that option on my iPhone at the moment. So do I have to install the eSIM, then I’ll have the option to turn off the Optus physical SIM?

      The only one that has "restrictions" will be the Unlimited KDDI eSIMs - understanably they do not want you to abuse the true unlimited data by sharing the hotspot, so they limit the amount of data you can hotspot.

    How much data would you need?

    Our Japan 5G eSIM has data from 1GB to 50GB or there are also unlimited options.

    Or 90 days unlimited options - really depends on your data need.

  We go to slightly unusual places - off to Nepal and Bhutan in April, for example.
  I had a12-month esim, but my phone died (and was replaced FOC) but that esim was voided. It may have been possible to 'port' it, but far too complicated.
  I want to buy a 365-day esim, with lots of countries and ability to make phone calls as well in as many places as possible.
  What do you recommend? And do your esims only work on the phone on which they are activated (generally tied to that phone's serial number) if one needs, for any reason, to replace the phone?
