    Showing $454.80 for me…

    • Probably need to put the $10 voucher off $100 spend…?

Holy crap this is an insane price!!

Bought the same twin pack late last year for like.. ~$100 more and its been great for the most part.

Highly recommended, especially at these prices.

    • Yeah, I agree! Really good price!

    What's "the other issues" ?

  • +6

I highly recommend against Deco if you care about using your local network during internet outages, e.g. for a NAS.

There's an issue with the dual auto-sensing WAN ports. If the internet drops, then the main router will start sensing both ports. This means the LAN port stops working. There's no manual override for this in the app that's required to manage the Deco's, which also requires an internet connection to work.

You can get around this by connecting your LAN to a secondary router, but then your WiFi is a bottleneck.

    • if the deco is an AP mode then… what are you on about the wifi being a bottleneck?

      • Are you talking about running ethernet to each individual AP? In that case, I would generally recommend using TP-Link Omada instead of TP-Link Deco.

But my initial comment is regarding the use of them as mesh routers and not just access points.

        • oh but you can have mesh AP too
my two decos are wifi backhauled in AP mode

          • @FoxJump: You can, but then the WiFi can be a bottleneck.

            E.g. fibre > random router > WiFi > Deco > Ethernet cable > NAS

If your NAS syncs with a cloud backup then it'll only sync as fast as your WiFi, not your fibre connection.

It'll also eat into the bandwidth for the other devices, even if they're only using local WiFi.

Though I guess most people will just cable the NAS to the router, which isn't a Deco in your scenario, so it's a moot point.

It only matters if you're planning on using the LAN functionality of the Deco.

    • Insanely stupid design decision. Only reason i have not upgraded from Netgear Orbi RBK50.

    • @besttechadvisor which competitors handle this well?

  • do these require cloud management or can they be managed locally? can they only be used as access points behind a wired router?

    • +1

deco app can work locally w/o internet
they can be used in AP mode only

      • thanks!

      • deco app can work locally w/o internet

Are you sure? I had an internet outage recently and this was not the case.

I also can't find this with a Google search or by looking Deco changelogs. I can find similar complaints though. I know you can connect and set-up Decos locally with the app, but once they're all set-up I believe the Deco app requires internet access to manage the LAN. I would be very happy to find out this has changed. Are you specifically in AP-only mode? Have you tested this for yourself? Thanks! 😁

what you experience was probably it's wan autosensing piece of shit system.

if you have it set as AP mode only, then it is fine.
i have my deco device blocked from the internet and the app works locally

          • @FoxJump: Was it ever connected to the internet? If not, I'm guessing that's why it still works. Once the Decos connect to internet after set up, they refused to use the app locally without internet access.

            • @besttechadvisor: nope.mines are intermittently connected to the internet. i can switch this on/off at my router

          • @FoxJump: That is absolutely the worst bug that they refuse to fix years and years on

            • @pingponged: it's a piece of crap
on my x60 i got them to give me debug fw where they switched it off, and one port was predetermined wan.

I find Decos to be pretty problematic personally. Not a fan of having to manage everything through a phone either.

    • Not a fan of having to manage everything through a phone either.

That'll be most every mesh system

      • Residential/consumer, yeah. You can opt for the prosumer/commercial TP-Link Festa or Omada range, but you'll need ethernet cabling last I checked.

  • +1

If you're after this make sure you get version 2. V1 doesn't support BE on the 2.4ghz however V2 fixes this. Also slightly faster wifi. But if you don't care which version then cheapest works best.

      WI-FI AC1200 lol

  • I hear so many bad things in here about tp link having terrible firmware and design decisions that although the price is right and tri band is good I just can't bite the bullet

  • So close to pulling the trigger but…
    TP-Link…
