Options to Open an Old Safe

Hi all, I have a very old safe in the basement that I can’t open. It’s likely there’s nothing in it but I want to make sure. I’ve been quoted $2000+gst to reinstate the lock or $1200+gst to force it open. Are there any more affordable options?

    Enjoyable Sunday reading here.

Looking forward to the outcome and hoping you can find out if there is anything inside whilst preserving this masterpiece.

    This needs a poll!

Also can you afford the 2K, even if the safe is empty or contents not immediately valuable?

The thing is, you will have a working functional and secure storage location for your chocolate. Among other things. That is a literal steal for $2000. Don't be skint, that is A Bargain.

  • Is hydrochloric acid a thing?

Sure I saw a movie where they squirted some liquid on a safe and it dissolved the metal allowing entry to the safe.

Commercial Plasma cutter or cutting torch should do the trick

  • What happens if you drop it?

I feel like Road Runner would push it off the top of a high mountain onto Wilecoyote's head.

  • Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again?

FBI says most bank robbers pass a note to a bank teller and the bank teller opens the safe for them coming in second after brute force.

  • That's a beautiful old Milner's safe. Don't wreck it, restore it!

It's worth the money to get the lock redone…. don't drill holes in it or hit it with an angle grinder. You'll regret it.

  • Drill a hole and insert a camera to check if there is anything worth opening. Then you decide whether to continue to crack open or not.

  • Ok my family has a history in lock and safes.

That safe is an old pos and not worth anything. You can take the front name badge off and maybe get $50-100 on ebay.

Suggest you ring a safe company like cmi in southern sydney and. They can take it away and open it, then dispose of it.

  • Open with this code:

    51-19 degrees

  • do you care about how the safe end's up?
if no: Angle grinder and a number of discs
    if yes: pay a professional

Is it worthy of restoration? Looks full of character. 10 years ago when we moved in to our place, there was a small floor safe which was locked, and no keys. I didn’t want to, but the wife insisted on getting a locksmith as she wanted to use it. Around $500 or so to open it and refit a new locking mechanism. Turned out there was about $5,000 U.S. in it. I guess I’m just saying that you never know.

$5,000 US or a can of sardines from the 1970s …

    • Good ROI

  • Liquid nitrogen and a gympie. Or buy a stethoscope and watch some yt videos, and if that fails you can always play Dr and patient.
