  • Not really a BD recorder, is it? You might want to fix the title.
Still looks good, depending on how good the user interface is.

Is it just me, or are we ripped off on the prices of HD recorders?
Everything else TV related, including TVs themselves, have been getting cheaper year-on-year but the price of these things are still high. You can but an HD set top box less than $50 and a 500GB hard drive is about the same. But put it all in 1 box and it costs double that. I don't get it.

    • your right, but your forgetting the 3D blu ray player part of the unit.

Its Australia, we are ripped off for everything. Electronics, food, cars the list goes on, the joke has even moved to electronic downloads, so the age old argument of shipping costs is null yet they still charge us inflated pricing.

Yeah we are so hard done by.. if they raise the minimum wage any higher I might just lose it. Can you believe that we get 4 weeks of paid annual leave? What a joke! Don't even get me started on maternity leave and all of our 'sick' days. Pfft…

And you know what the other day I was sick and had to see a doctor.. I had to wait 30 minutes before I could see my GP without an appointment. What is going on?

And remember how we came through the GFC barely unscathed? What was that about… don't forget that time when our government actually gave US money. Wow! I mean why does ANYONE want to stay in Australia.

Yeah you're right - we are being ripped off. I might just move back to Canada and get a factory job that pays $12/hr (if I can unemployment is so high) and take my two weeks annual leave along with next to no access to medical care. It's not so bad waiting 3-5hrs to see a doctor really because you can read expired magazines.

But hey at least my TV's, microwaves, cars and clothing will be a tad cheaper.

Mate be thankful you are in Australia with the opportunity to complain about paying a bit extra for sh1t you don't need. I've lived all over the world and there is no where else I'd rather be. These ongoing whinges about price differences are annoying and a waste of 1's and 0's.

Move to America and live on a minimum wage salary for 3 months. Than come back to Australia and do the same.

        *end rant

"And remember how we came through the GFC barely unscathed?"

Ironically, we supposedly dodged that bullet by borrowing excessively. ie. Doing the very same thing that caused the chaos in the US and EU. The jury is still out on whether we actually dodged it or delayed the inevitable. Our household debt is some of the highest in the world, and even our "world's greatest treasurer" now says he can't find a surplus. Growth and commodity prices are dropping and interest rates are now down to the lowest in 60 years. That last factoid is reported by the press as "good times, go out and borrow at record low rated. Leverage up!" but those rates are a reaction to the country's recent performance.

The usual suspects will go "but but but, we're best of a bad bunch". Hardly an accolade.

  • IIRC when I looked at twin tuner PVR ty[e devices for a relo months ago the Samsung one (which I'm unsure could have been this one) but it wasn't a true twin tuner in that it could not record two shows at the same time (regarldess of which channels they were on). I'm unsure if it WAS this device but DYOR before jumping in as the one I saw was 100% sure a Samsung so hopefully not this model. :-)

IMHO if it can't record ANY two channels whilst playing back a prerecorded show then it's not a true twin tuner device…but manufacturer definitions seem to differ from this significantly. ;-)

    • "This Samsung’s dual recording ability is its star feature – but it’ll have to amp up its performance to beat its rivals" … "Those dual tuners make it possible for you to record two different programmes at the same time – you can even watch a third channel, as long it’s on the same frequency as one of the channels you’re recording." • Good price for a 3D Blue ray player with twin tuner recorder.

  • Great price.. paid a lot more than this a couple of months ago. Embarrased to say how much more!

  • I know next to nothing about Blu-Rays.
Are any capable of multi-region dvd playback?

  • Great PVR and blue Ray player. I bought one of these 6months ago for over $500 was a good deal then, so this one is a bargain. The interface is very slick and easy to use.

    • Whats the difference between this PVR and a cheapo PVR??

  • OT a bit (again) and further to my previous rant…
I just bought a cheap HD STB at a shop in the Nunawading (Melb) Brand Smart centre. It has USB output (2.0) so you can set it up with an HD for recording. Has HDMI out (no cable included, but WTH). Took me 3 goes to program all the channels but it got there in the end. Picture looks good, not perfect but good enough for a second recorder in the house. In fact, my only criticism is that there were no batteries included for the remote control. No big thing.
    It was $14. FOURTEEN BUCKS.
I am passing this on for the usual reasons, because I want to share a bargain, not because I want to continue a yours-is-better-than-mine-so-stop-yer-whining-eh geopolitical p#ssing contest. The shop is called 1st In, 1st Served, it does not have a website and sells mostly household items (my wife bought some nice cutlery, which was also cheap, and that was why we were in there). The brand is Onix. They looked to have 20 or so on the shelf.
Now, why are hockey pucks and Maple Syrup so expensive in this country?

    • Actually maple syrup is quite affordable if you pick up a jug of Kirk's brand at Costco for about $10… :D

      • Will do!

  • You can buy 2 ($25 each) High Def Set top box at graysonline for $50 (dgtec) and a 500gb unpowered 2.5" usb hard disk for $49. The good thing about this setup is if the hard disk breaks down, you only replace the hard disk. If the stb breaks, you also only replace the stb.
It is also easy to backup the hard disk in case it fills up or copy more movies into it as the stb also plays movies you usually play on your PC.

The all in one pvr with built in hard disk like the samsung is more expensive and if one component fails (hard disk or power supply or tuner) you cannot replace it and have to buy another one (if out of warranty).

    • This one is also a 3D Blue Ray player with wireless built in, which is worth approx $150.
With the set-up you suggested, I don't know, how will you be able to control 2 Dgtec devices with a remote control. Using one remote will play both players. Also DGTEC set top boxes aren't that great in interface and reliability.

  • I am not sure, why this deal did not get more +ves. This one is a good deal.
