Looks like some good discounts on a lot of rockstar games
Max Payne 3, LA Noire, and Bully, are all < $9

  • +11

If only Red Dead Redemption, a game 8 years OLDER than Red Read Redemption 2, was at least the same price as it. But that would be asking too much.

    • +1

The difference is that RDR PC only just released on 30/10/2024, let it cook for another 5 years more (looks like RDR2 came out on steam 06/12/2019) and then you'll see the same deep discount.

You can however, pick up a pre-owned physical RDR copy on xbox (usually) on the cheap (I did so about 5 years back) if you have an xbox/playstation/backwards compat.

      • +4

I get it, but it was literally a resolution and frame rate bump. It’s a great game but $29 would have sufficed. Not like they haven’t already made bank on it. Business is business though.

    • +1

If you think that ones bad check out the price for old cod games, its really janky seeing something like the new modern warfare at a discounted price then World At War is like $80 just below it lmfao.

      • Activision being the publisher is the reason. AFAIK Sekiro has never dropped below $40 (if you don't count keyshops). 100% worth it for Sekiro, even at that price, but still crazy nonetheless.

If you buy these on steam - do you have to run them through the rockstar launcher?

Are they easy to run on Steamdeck?

I have them on EPIC so considering paying again for Steam for a little bit easier of a time.

    • +2

Do you have Heroic Games Launcher?

I find it pretty easy to run stuff on it, though I haven't tried any Rockstar stuff. I only mention it because you talked about Epic, and that runs great for me on Steam Deck

      • +1

I had Heroic for a while and thought it was pretty shit to be honest - had to keep signing in to everything etc.

Have since moved to Decky's Non Steam Launcher: https://github.com/moraroy/NonSteamLaunchers-On-Steam-Deck

I guess I should actually try RDR2 from Epic and NSL/Decky on my SD before purchasing again.

GTA IV on the other hand is a great deal, but has been lower a good while ago but not since 2015…!

I should clarify - the notes on the steam store pages are:
GTA IV: Warning: This title uses 3rd-party DRM (Rockstar Social Club).
RDR2: Requires 3rd-Party Account: Rockstar Games (Supports Linking to Steam Account)
Don't specifically mention the Rockstar Launcher, and they are different… can anyone clarify whether either of these titles require the rockstar launcher on top of Steam? It looks like GTA IV may require it.
        - If so it's not worth purchasing again for me for no extra convenience - just like a bunch of the EA games… which are on the EA app.

        • I've only just come back to Steam Deck after a few months of not playing, so I'll have to see if Heroic logs me out too. I do like the Decky plugin generally, so I might look into Non Steam Launcher if it comes to it! Thanks

        • OK I can confirm the GTA IV does not need the Rockstar Launcher as I just purchased it to test.

Also according to PCGamingWiki RDR2 requires the Rockstar Launcher :( https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Red_Dead_Redemption_2

    • If its a PC running windows it will prompt you to download the launcher for GTAV and RDR2. They will run on steam deck I can't speak for the steam deck needing the R* launcher I am guessing probably not given the OS.

    • +3

Only Rockstar games I've double (more like quadruple) dipped on Steam are GTA 3, GTA 4, and Max Payne 2.

GTA 3 predates the R* launcher and runs fine on it's own.
Max Payne 2 is the same.
GTA 4 when I went to play it the other day made me sign in (aaaaaagaaaaain) to the Rockstar launcher, after waiting minutes and minutes for it to "update", and then made me go get my laptop to get a verification code after typing in my password successfully.

Once you're signed in it's fine, but basically every other week it'll make you sign back in, real arsehole if you're, I don't know, just trying to play half an hour of GTA4 in bed before sleep and your phone is out in another room to not wake the baby, your laptop is closed because you're on the goddamn Deck trying to play your stupid 2008 game but no, go get your email you prick.

      • The steam deck has a web browser

        • If you're playing in game mode, which 99% of the time you are, you would have to go to desktop mode and kill your game.

If you bothered to shortcut a browser to game mode, launching it will still terminate your game.

When you launch the game, it will send a new code to your email. Since you can't have the game open AND check your email on the deck at the same time, you unfortunately need another device in this instance.

Gta4. That price is worth even the radio stations.

    • +8

didn't they butcher a bunch of the radio stations because their licensing ran out. same thing happened to the remastered trilogy.

      • +1

Yeah the radio stations have lost some of their tracks, there is some fix for it if you check the modding websites that restores them without much effort

  • +2

GTA 4 storyline was so good and emotional!

    • +4

I think I liked it more than GTAV… Ballad of Gay Tony was lots of fun too.

    Niko let's go bowling

The GTA and RDR series are one of the few that I believe could command a price of $150 for a game. Call me crazy but you are 100% getting more than $150 of content out of that game, its like a long interactive movie where the interactive part is actually enjoyable. Proper hollywood level of quality imo, if you've got a quiet long weekend this will sort you out.

    • -3

Call me crazy, but 120 at launch in 2008 (https://web.archive.org/web/20080404193311/http://www.ebgame…) is worth over 180 in 2025 (https://www.inflationtool.com/australian-dollar/2008-to-pres…) so,

      Again, call me crazy,

But maybe they should charge a hundred bucks and shut the (profanity) up, considering they make literal billions every year from selling online money in the game AFTER people have already bought in.

      • Yeah I will call you crazy for buying new games from EB.

        • Crazy - paying full price
Not crazy - thinking they should charge 150

          Okay then

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: I just said the quality of the game could command $150, not that they should charge it.

      • I paid $130 for Vice City in 2003. No ragrets.

        • Uhhh I bought Vice City Day 1 and it was never $130. Or did you import from NZ?

          • @Guybrush57: I lived in regional Australia at the time and everything was overpriced.

    • Yeah, nah. That's the advantage of software sales. Spend heaps on development and sales after hitting the sales target is gravy on top. If they sell 10 million copies at $100 each that is $1 billion and they have the in game purchases on top of that.

      • +1

I mean I am not going to retract my opinion because they made more money from MTX. I am simply saying its a $150 game in value, not that they should charge it. There aren't many games out there with hollywood level story telling, atmosphere/world building like it has whilst still maintaining great playability. People get upset over the MTX but thats a choice, I have not spent a cent more than the base game for any of those.

I really tried to like RDR2 but it just felt like a chore sometimes compared to RDR1. After looking after the kids, you just want to game but nooo you have to feed and brush your horse. You ride through a town and accidentally press the wrong button and shoot someone, now you are wanted and now have to ride halfway across the map to pay a fine. I dont remember RDR1 being this onerous.

    • +1

      Had RDR2 day one.

Still haven't made it past the mountain you start on :'(

      • +2

I feel you have to push through.

I think I started it once… It all seemed to much and I didn't touch it for a year or so. Then pushed through the beginning and now probably have a hundred plus hours.

      • +3

The game only really starts after you get off the mountain, I actually use a savegame file to skip it, you could do the same if you wanted :)

Top 3 game of all time for me

      • I had RDR on the Xbox for even less time. I turned the map off, as I do in GTA games to make them a bit more difficult, lost track of the chicken and couldn't find it. End of my RDR experience after less than an hour.

      • It's a slog, I bounced off it pretty early on, but like others said I came back to it and pushed through, became one of my favourite games of all time. Possibly the best video game story as well.

    • You know there is fast travel right… Got to get a little into the game… But its there.

    • That's my sentiment with a lot of Rockstar games as they prioritise 'experience' over fluidity. 'Story dynamics' over gameplay.
Kind of like Dark Souls is an animation priority combat game.
They started it with the animation priority in GTA IV (Euphoria physics) and have made it extreme in RDR2.
In GTA IV hilarity ensued most of the time due to Euphoria, like getting dragged along with a car whilst you tried to grab the handle to open the door if you get run over mid-action.
GTA V has it hastened up a bit in my opinion but it's not as hilarious.
RDR2 takes it way too far if you ask me, which makes it extremely laborious and tedious.

I think it either clicks with you or doesn't. For me, waiting to 'open a cupboard' is f-cking boring and a waste of time and it adds up.
Kind of like having to click to pick up every item dropped in Diablo, when a critter could do it for you or you just hoover them up automatically.
Same sentiments in VR games where they make you open every door manually and turn hose cocks to stop gas leaks etc. We get it, it's VR, but it's barely immersive and its a waste of time.
      QTE's are sort of similar.
Opening doors/chests by mashing the buttons (such as OG God of War games) also, waste of time.

      Anyway, rant over.

      • +1

I dunno I have to disagree, I feel like the slowness of the game for RDR2 was intentional. Pushes that role playing aspect a little harder(which given the success of GTAV/FiveM makes total sense). Its not a game to jump on and play an hour I agree, but I save cod for that sort of session.

You are right, it all comes down to what you enjoy overall, some people like fast games and some slow. I think the fast majorly outweigh the slow so I am grateful to have my little world that I can ride my horse, set up a camp between towns and meet random strangers along the way. One of the few vanilla games out there that I can just get lost in the world they created. Sadly its just not very compatible with regular life, I got away with it because I do shift work and friends and family are working whilst I have time off.

        • Yes fair enough. I can appreciate it, I just don't enjoy it. It's why I stopped playing traditional RTS games years ago also (and tangentially MMORPGs), as too much of it is just waiting around for things to build and/or resources to come in, and doing inane fetch-quests. I can't quite understand the people with the patience to play Factorio or Satisfactory for excessive amounts of time too.

My time is too short to 'wait' in a game any more.
Even match making really frustrates me when having to wait between games.
Probably as I started gaming as a kid many years ago when you had a server browser and could pick where you played (and who with), rather than needing to be matched with likewise players automagically.
I get exactly why this change has occurred away from dedicated servers, and again appreciate it as matchmaking keeps players playing games longer, etc.
However finishing a match in a game (lets say Halo Infinite) and then having a good 2-3 minutes between starting the next match is such a drain. Same goes for Apex Legends etc, but at least usually a match in Apex is longer and therefore less time spent waiting between, unless you die straight away.
I'm comparing this to say… Quake/II and/or classic Counter-Strike. Where even if they were round-based games (AQ2/TF) and you have to 'wait' to respawn upon death, it felt in my control (and you could spectate and partake in the ongoing match somewhat by watching it) rather than just waiting for a timer to go down and a new bunch of strangers to join the lobby etc.
I think I'm largely against the norm, or rather too old and the average gamer these days (albeit still relatively old) is trained to wait every 5-10 minutes to progress. They might check their phone, etc. I tend to commit without distraction so find it super grating.
It's fickle, as some games I get engrossed in the story and watch every cut scene and read every 'note', and others I just click through all this stuff to get to the gamplay.
Having children brought this into super focus for me.

          Again, I keep ranting.

        • Not really, there’s plenty of slower games that still play great with good animations, RDR2 has auto aim turned on by default it’s that bad

    • 100% I stopped after a few hours and had to push myself to finish and I don't have kids.

Going back I had no clue what the controls were. They seemed unnecessarily complex.

    • +1

Agree. It's a very self indulgent game. It's for people who are unemployed and have time to delve into the easter eggs and larping.
Every moment is slow and cumbersome.
For a cowboy game, I can't believe how punishing it was to commit a crime and have bounty hunters show up at the most inopportune moments, like when I've finally found a damn deer to actually try and hunt.
I didn't find the story emotional at all.

I likely have this opinion because I played RDR1 and it was one of my favourite games of all time.

  • GTA IV is the best GTA game!
Highly recommended for anyone who hasn't played it yet

    • I might agree, I have GTA5 and just the amount of stuff you can do just feels overwhelming.

  • Great game. What’s the easiest way to play on Apple Silicon?

  • when i was a kid i was obsessed with gta4 and red dead one. i would play, or watch youtube vids,or go on forums and tell people waxing lyrical over san andreas to "get out of the wayback machine grandpa". then gta5 came out and i had to stop myself boosting the relative merits of niko and company on a forum to some kid entranced with the new thing.its all one big circle isn't it

  • Finally buying RDR2, great price. With the new GPUs coming out graphics will be amazing. (Definitely getting either 5070ti/9070XT)
