No, it can be played offline, however the entire game is not on the disc and requires a large download to run.
Goes well with the TopCashback $5 bonus if you have anything else to buy (min $30 spent).

I suggest trying Xbox game pass for a month and see if you enjoy the game. I tried it (having loved fo3/4/nv and Morrowind/oblivion/skyrim) but found starfield a bit meh. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I struggled through the main story for a quite a fair bit in - cleared faction questlines and all, the main questline is so dull and boring, that I realised I'm better off using my limited gaming time to play stuff I actually enjoy.

- well, the game is, unfortunately, very disappointing - repetitive, not scifi at all (nothing futuristic as you'd see in CP77 for example, all designs like in first Star Wars movie, things like Western style village…. in the 24th century?…), it would have been good if released in 2015 or earlier… Barely finished main storyline, don't waste time/money.
