    • I love your thinking!!! ❤️

genuine question for anyone that has this
    why not full EV?
wont maintenance of an ICE engine outweigh the benefits here?

i dont see the appeal of this car

    • +3

      Yep, this!

And to fit the traditional engine, you forgo most of the battery capacity. There is a relatively tiny battery in PHEV's and in most driving conditions you aren't using the EV side at all. You still have all the maintenance of a traditional engine, and are still tied to the bowser. I honestly reckon its a marketing gimmick to have people think they are embracing EV, but in reality aren't really changing anything over a super efficient ICE equivalent.

      Full EV, or don't bother!

    • +3

The appeal is that it weighs twice as much so your fuel economy is garbage.

If you drive less than the 80km per day or whatever then you'll be using only electricity and no fuel. But, if you want to take a long trip, you can just use petrol and refill when needed and not rely on needing to charge. It's a middle ground for people who want to use less fuel (or have a positive environmental impact etc) but don't want range anxiety.

or just buy $20k Kia and save $25k

I've asked myself the same question.
I think some who are finding the transition to a full EV difficult can find some assurance with a PHEV.

      Personally, I'd wait for a Sealion 7.

  • Would probably pay more for the Dynamic. The sensors and camera alone is worth that much…

    • Get in quick - the Dynamic wont be around much longer..

  • Anyone knew about the manufacturing process of cars for the step of MY plate? Do they leave the step out until shipping to overseas so they choose whatever plate of the year? That seems logical considering EVs are overstocked.

I always thought it related to yearly model changes/tweaks they do - and that can happen months before the end of the calendar year.

I bought a MY15 Hyundai Sante Fe that was built in December 2014, but not delivered until Feb 2015.
It had some small changes from the MY14 model built earlier in 2014.

  • BYD after sales service seems shocking….

    • nothing unusual there, I had a brand new VW Tiguan drop its gearbox in first 5k and had to wait 3 months for a new gearbox to arrive from Germany probably :)
if only we had a locally produced car

My Skoda broke a button on its handbrake and it was going to cost $350 for a replacement and take a month to order.

    • Probably Japanese cars can get parts easier.

  • dumb q, why would I get PHEV instead of EV? in this case BYD Seal.
Some friends also told me to get Rav4 hybrid instead because they're already known to be reliable, whereas we are still on the testing period of BYD I guess?

    • if you are asking then BEV is probably better for you. Think those who occasionally need to do long trips/want to take it more remote, those who don't live in a house or have a charging station at home etc

    • The Seal is a sporty looking sedan type of car so not really comparable.

You'd need to compare it more to the Atto which is full EV smaller SUV or wait for the new Sealion 7.

Does anyone else get vulva vibes from the front seats?

    • LOL damn now I cant unsee that…. :D

  • so wahts the drive away now ?

Still doesn't feel like we're deep in the pricing war for EV's yet, it's just like the first volleys over the last little while.

    • It's not even an EV

  • Waiting for Sealion 7

  • BYD if you really want to impress me do a 7-seater SUV that has a range of 600KM+ and can do 0-100 in under 5 seconds for under $50K

  • I could never seriously buy a car with the name Sealion. Maybe in Chinese this sounds okay, but they really need to work on their English names.

    wrong site.. should be OZrrP…

    • I get where you are coming from.. but this deal has over 200 up votes (to only 3 neg votes).
This indicates the wider OzB community finds value in this post.

Its not simply an advertisement of a products RRP - the "bargain" is the Sealion 6 was already popular* at previous spec/price - but is now available for significantly less (albeit with some features removed).

*Despite only being available in the latter half of the year, it became the top selling PHEV in Australia for 2024 - beating many other models that were available for sale the entire year.

  • FYI a post on the Sealion 6 Australia Facebook group indicates BYD advised:
    * all stock of the Dynamic has been allocated to buyers (despite the website still showing some available inventory)
    * next shipment due in March only has Essential and Premium models
