New wave of GPU's coming, so if you want to stretch your dollars and maximise value it's advisable to wait at least until Feb 1 before buying (older gen cards may see a price drop then).

Not that many good deals at the moment. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/desktop-computer?noexpired=…

  • Is that budget including buying a monitor, peripherals, etc.?

And you're wanting to BYO or more so looking at prebuilts?

      Prebuilt and Tower only

My advice to most parents is to consider just getting a gaming laptop which can also double as a portable study/work device. Practical all in one machines, Saves hassle with peripherals and can easily and be hooked up to TVs or moniters if desired.

If you are set on a work/game station then look at Techfast…. There are other pre builts companies too - search ozbargain deals.

Remember to budget for a decent moniter, peripherals- ie keyboard/mouse, headset etc.

Would generally advise against bringing gaming laptops to school, for a few reasons; their battery life isn't the best and they're heavy and bulky.

Better off getting a refurb ex-corp laptop for study/bringing to school and a gaming PC for gaming, IMO.

        +1 from me
Additionally, whether the kids mean to or not, the laptop taken to school takes an absolute beating.
Don't subject the expensive machine to this :)

Probably better to have a dedicated study laptop.

The cheaper RTX 4060 config will suffice, with plenty of opportunity to upgrade the system later on (AM5 will give you that)

Go on! The 4060 Ti is still within budget, OP should buy that one! :-D

Only 8gb vram… Can get a much better gpu with this budget

    Ask the teenager?

  • Any toaster or microwave can run fortnite and MC.

Whatever you get I'd try future proof a bit

    Ensure you have

    2tb SSD Storage
    DDR 5
AMD GPU with at least 16gb vram
Many people in here recommending builds with the rtx 4060, I'd say no to that, for $1,500 you could get a pc with a much better gpu than that.

Many people in here recommending builds with the rtx 4060, I'd say no to that, for $1,500 you could get a pc with a much better gpu than that.

OP has stated they want a pre-built, and right now there aren't any other deals

And it's closer to $1,200 with shipping, which isn't terrible considering the other aspects of the build (AM5, 32GB DDR5, etc.) - I'd wager OP's better off seeing how the RTX 4060 does and then selling it off if it doesn't perform to expectations

    • What gpu would you suggest looking at that’s 16gb? I’m looking to build a pc similar to your suggestions. I’m guessing AM5 would be best re longevity too right?

      • Wait till RX 9000 are released and RTX 5000 to start shipping, prices will drop on current and older gen cards

If you can't wait though, and don't want to buy next gen, a 7800XT (or the 6800XT/6950XT if you're on a budget) are still decent options. If you must go NVIDIA you'd be looking at a 4070 Ti Super (don't bother with the 4060 Ti 16GB variant) but imo pure price to perf raster-wise isn't quite there (just yet, at least)

You could go for one of the next gen GPU offerings but you'll be waiting a few more months to get your hands on them

And ultimately depends on what budget + screen res + refresh rate + graphics settings you want to run at

Don't trust me though, do your own research too!

Thanks for the info ! I’m seriously contemplating this current nebula pc deal just listed, cpu 7800x3d and gpu 4070 super TI, ~$2.5k. Pretty exxy, but I guess buy once cry once and it should last a good while?

I’m mainly looking for a good machine for Fortnite that can hopefully get 240fps, low quality settings is fine, but as a future proof thing I am hoping for 1440p / 27” as a future proof. (Most of the competitive Fortnite players seem to run 1080p tho).

I could probably get by on much lower spec and price but epic games seems to be doing more and more updates and I’m sure at some point in the future it’ll get much more resource hungry.

Pls make sure you set some rigid guidelines in usage. These games can suck teenagers in to the point they can’t check out. It’s a serious problem and not to be ignored. Not saying they can’t, shouldn’t play these games, but set boundaries and ensure they include other recreational activities outside the computer.

I kind of agree with this. Daughter's partner (27) loves gaming, to the extent that she does most of the work around the house (and outside) and he plays computer games.

Make sure it isn't to the detriment of everything else and become a lifelong habit.

  • avoid intel CPUs

For those in Melbourne.. for prebuilts..

When Evatech has a special.. its probably the way to go…

A little more expensive than the other interstate state builders, but tend to use better components..

this one was a real cracker of a deal here…

If you are not in a rush..
some of the techfast stuff is unbeatable in value… the whole machine is cheaper than the sum of the parts..
Wait to see if they have any January offers.. (but you have to be pretty quick)

You may wait a month of more for delivery though..
