Does this thing have its own brain or does it need to have a ipod docked in it. It would suck if you forgot to charge your iphone one night and your alarm doesn't go off the next morning

      I don't think so. I checked and smashed mine open and couldn't find its brain.

  The dock has its own clock brains, so you can set an alarm independently of the iphone/ipod.
  This is a goodie oldie, bought mine for $80 4 years ago now, works as well as ever, seen me through many iDevices!
