Massive Lightning Storm in Sydney

He is/was a wise man. Only way to beat a lightning strike.
Few years back, lightning bolt hit something super close to our house, like 10-12 meters away. Massive flash and super loud bang.
TCL tv that was on standby lost it's sound and picture went upside down. Repairs guy said motherboard was fried.
Lost adsl modem and a laptop that was connected to the wall outlet.
Big PC setup was connected via Thor powerboard/filter thing - all good.
White goods were fine, like nothing happened.Powerboards/filters from now on on every electronics.
lol @ forbit
About 20 years back lightning hit a tree 30m from the inlaw's house. The underground Telstra line was 5m from the tree. The phone blew off the wall and left scorch marks around the mount. 1.5km of phone line was burnt out.
Telstra took 9 months to fix it. During that time Telstra supplied free mobile phones with unlimited use which was a bit useless as the phone reception was rubbish.
nope id like a new tv or anything.
Meh! There's no dark red. Pretty average if you ask me. Nothing special
The radar colours on the app don't actually compare to what they show on the BOM website. So all orange on the app would actually be all red (and above). I believe they are working on it, but it's caught me off guard, thinking it's a tame storm when it wasn't.
I was driving home during the peak of it. I couldn't see the road or the kerbs.
As we are talking about random topics, I really enjoy thunderstorms.
do you still have to unplug electronics? :o
Even more so these days, too much sensitive equipment and costly to replace.
Yalls not decked out with surge protectors from the years of ozbargain posting?
I'm still using these on every TV and desktop computer. There was some great DS deals back in the days.
ds days
I’ll be pouring out a Melbourne bitter in remembrance
Also because it’s a Melbourne bitter
(Jks I love all beers)
Why not have beer instead? ;)
Belkin were okay.
I was a big fan of fortron. The owner was a friend of mine.
I have @ 10 units.
Both companies had indemnity warranties, but only rated to a certain hit/surge.
Realistically, these companies gambled on this like winning the lottery, but being hot by lightning was more likely via power, antenna or phone line.
These days it's more unlikely, but unplug your devices.
On a side note, i knew a guy who unplugged his gear, from the powerpoint, and reckoned it still zapped his gear.
14 years out of them and you didn’t even upvote the deal…
He's only been a member for 5 years
@Guybrush57: Oh, trust me…
hethey have been lurking a lot longer than that…@pegaxs: Lol so have I. i reckon i could've been an '06 member if i joined Day 1 :(
There's no storm here in QLD. What are you talking about?
That's a change. ;)
It's weird now having any around us and not being in the news for a change…
Holy crap! Way north of you and we got slammed. Flooded the back yard, overflowed the gutters. Brown outs. Lightening everywhere…
Damn, hope everything was ok and no damage. I was drive home and when you see water and debris going sideways with a light show in the sky, shits going down.
I was kind of worried, i do have surge protectors, but not on everything. i got 3 synology nas on surge boards, got 4-5 laptops with a few connected just to the wall. all my 3 PCs are surged.
Kinda freaky when you hear load thunder continuously over 30-40 minutes.
We've been hearing thunder since 4pm, but put it down to gunshots in Gateshead. ;)
Still going.I just thought… “oh, kicking off in Wallsend again…”
How far off, I sat and wondered?
Been a while since I've been around, is Windale still the dodgy area?
@Caped Baldy: Yes. It Mt Hutton, Gateshead, Hamilton South flats, parts of Bar Beach, Toronto West, Bolton Point, Woodrising. ;)
We had 12.5mm of rain in about 10 mins. It doesn’t really sound like a lot, but it’s basically a 1/2 inch of rain in the old money, in about 1/6th of an hour.
We even got a few hail stones. Not big ones and not many. About the size of peas or smaller and maybe a cup full for the whole yard. I could hear them on the roof and saw a few out in the grass…
No damage to my place, neighbour is at work and I can see two windows open (toilet/bathroom and what may be a bedroom?)
We have water arrestor/buffer tanks and mine was blocked I found out and that caused the flooding in the back yard. Cleaned the collector inlet of debris and it started taking water again.
"We had 12.5mm of rain in about 10 mins"
I think we've had less than that for the whole of summer so far….. it's bone effen dry round here
.@Nugs: It was like that hear up until last night… almost all my grass is dead even though I have been sinking as much of my tanked water in as I can. Sprinklers on and it was all just dying. Everyone in my street, their lawns are dead… Just the not stop heat, hot winds and lack of rain…
Added to the rain we had in the deluge last night, it has basically rained non stop since then. We have had another 9mm since midnight (when my weather station rolls data.)
My wife's friend was 10 minutes from landing in Sydney from Brisbane, now they are back in Brisbane with no flight until tomorrow.
Gotta love pushing the curfew when there's a storm in Sydney.
Don't catch a train…..
Trams also not running from circular quay to Town hall.
Ouch, close but no cigar.
My NBN went down during one of the big strikes. Doesnt look like any of my equipment was fried. Need to wait for a tech as there arent any NBN outages.
this happens quite often to NBN modems. happened to us twice.
they just replace the box.
so now every time there is a big storm, i just unplug it till the storm passes,.
Yeah it's mostly a problem with FTTC and it's not really a problem with FTTP. What type of nbn do you have?
Let me guess… FTTC?
Canberra got hit pretty badly too in some parts.
Anyone else?
maybe 10 million people…
I still power off and unplug during big storms or if in the middle of one, even with Surge Protectors on all my devices
I get concerned that the power of a lightning strike, would over power the peak threshold of the Surge Protector
(I don't know if this actually how this works or if that's a thing, but i'd assume so and rather take the extra precaution :D)Wise move
I thought to myself around 8:20, I should charge my portable lights in case of a blackout, within 10 minutes it was blackout time. Got an email from ISP saying that nbn might be down but I guess I got lucky and it still works for me. Nothing got fried I think but thinking of getting some surge protectors just in case.

Does light have mass?
No, light does not have mass in the traditional sense. Light consists of particles called photons, which are massless. However, photons do carry energy and momentum, which means they can exert pressure (known as radiation pressure) and can influence objects they interact with.
Although photons are massless, they are still affected by gravity due to their energy, as described by Einstein's theory of General Relativity. This is why light can bend around massive objects, a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing.
So, while light itself has no rest mass, it behaves in ways that can be influenced by gravitational fields, thanks to its energy and momentum.
Good Pickup @jv
photons do carry energy and momentum
Momentum without mass! 😲
Influenced by gravitational fields without mass! 😲Witchcraft !!!
My old man did that in 80s and forbit us from using the tv or phone lol
