Looking for a decent backpack for my son starting school next year. Needs to fit a laptop, lunch, some books, jumper, and whatever other odds and ends high school kids carry. And should be comfortable as he's walking or riding. Any suggestions? Preferably not over-priced, but functionality should come first.

In my day it was a canvas rucksack. Guys would draw or sew band logos and put pins on them. Should be $20-30.
100% this. My rucksack had Poison and Metallica on it :)

Get the school's backpack with the school logo.
High yield investment right there.

no chickens, but plenty of bulls…
@jv: wrong end….
Here's one with the school crest
High Sierra backpacks have served me well for years as a teacher. There's a padded inner line for your computer when the kids kick it like a football, lots of little pockets for sticky fingers to rummage through, surprisingly large interior volume for stuffing unmarked exam paper into, and side pockets for "water" bottles.
Why are kids kicking your backpack like a football and getting their sticky fingers into your backpack?
It was my poor attempt at wit.
Something like this OP;

Agree, I have used High Sierra to/from work (cycling) and sports and light hiking and the first one lasted more than 10 years and probably could have kept going if replacing the zips was cheaper than just buying a new one… the new one is close to 5 years use and still going well

If you are looking for functionality, then get one with wheels. Your son's back will thank you.
School walkways/hallways in my (recent) experience are too cramped, dirty and congested with people to warrant getting one with wheels - YMMV, though.
It is only a school kids backpack. I feel this is the same lazy style often seen in FakebooK… can everybody do the research for me and recommend a blah blah.
Just see online or go in store, a larger version of their current backpack.
If asking for advise, try this idea, as it will suit your ideas and your budget. Also, ask the staff at Charity stores where the backpacks are. See which are used and good v used and falling apart.
Narrow it down to some types/brands, list them here and ask for 'which one we would not use re quality issues etc.

They are suppose to carry laptop (daily) as well. TIA.OP with 187 posts should know how to search. Oink.

The replies on that thread are so weak I don’t blame the OP at all for asking afresh.
I blame him even more.
honestly it depends on what kind of bag, but have a look at the Amazon Basics range. They seem to be good value for money and pretty good features. I'm not in school, but I use one for work and it's now 3 years of use and going fine.
Consider backpacks like this that feature a uniquely designed posture stabilising spinal rod and Anatomical Back System shaped to the curvature of the spine. Available for purchase in many schools.
Just bought this one. Had great reviews.

Go Window shopping!
Ask other parents of children going to the same school what bags they are getting and what the most popular bags are. Most schools have official or unofficial Facebook groups for parents. Ask the question there. This way you know what works based on what the kids need to carry for that school and what is popular/fashionable.
