Help Choosing a 55"- 65" TV - Budget $1000- $1800

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new tv but after reading reviews and people issues I'm lost about what to choose.

Ideally, I would like a 65" but 55 could be accepted if quality is really better, mainly to watch various streaming services and formula 1 in a well-lit room from a nvidia shield. Budget between $1000 and $1800.

The contenders I have found:

  • Samsung 65" QN85D Neo QLED for 1800$
  • TCL 65" C755 for 1600
  • Samsung 55" S90C OLED for 1500$
  • TCL 65" C855 for 1800$ (although I'm not sure Appliance Central is a good store to buy from, else it's $2000)

I'm hesitating a lot between those because I have one seat that will be a fair bit on the side so I'm worried the angle will make the image bad with the LED ones, apparently the oled one isn't great in a bright room and there is a lot of stutter (maybe I would get used to it) and Samsung updates aren't the most reliable but it's the cheapest (and smallest). TCL UI can be sluggish too apparently and overall oled is supposed to be better than (mini)led.

Any help?

I have the Sony A95K QD-OLED (same tech as the Samsung S90C) and my sister has the Samsung S95B (older model of the S90C). I use mine in a bright room and its perfect. No issues in terms of brightness.

Depending on what you watch on TV,you may have watch out for burn in on OLED - news tickers, channel logos etc. But in my year of ownership I have not seen any.

    • thanks burn in shouldn't be an issue as usually what I watch doesn't have static content

Another day of , "Help my knickers are in a twist".

    • People on bargain website suddenly become experts on knickers/tv reviewing :)

      • Why not ⁉️ They're experts on everything else !

  • Can you view these in store?

The TCL is the top of the range and UI is snappy. And can be replaced with a Google TV if you find it not good enough. They also look better than the cheap OLEDs.

The Samsung Q85D does look good too. Havent really looked at the S90C but looks good value.

    • Tcl is bottom of the range, not top, but bang for buck, yes, they are very good for what you get for your money, i am happy with mine, and yes, i dont think the UI is even slightly sluggish, very snappy

I meant top of the tcl range, not more broadly.

Ive got the tcl 75" 755 and i am pretty happy with it, but 1600 is too much to pay for a 65", i got my 75" for $1492 a while ago now and have seen it this price many times since, a 65" should be in the $1100-$1200 when on special which is quite regularly i believe

    • Thanks it's a few hundred bucks cheaper than the c855 so I thought it was a normal price

      • I replied below but the 75c855 can be had for $1725 minus 5% GC. Happy to share the sales order from good guys if you need.

I’ve got a TCL C755 but it’s only 50”. It’s much better in my bright room than the LGB4 Oled 2016 model. The LG has no burn in. The 2024 TCL is snappy compared to my Fetch box, it has Google TV built in, and after a bit of fiddling I’m very happy with the picture - strong blacks, very punchy whites, and few reflections. When viewing in store be aware all the sets will be in store mode which is high contrast, very bright. Never thought I’d buy a TCL, but am very happy with it. 3yr at home warranty too.

    • Got a link to the settings you changed? I just got the same TV last week.

    • I had to do a factory reset to get access to all the settings - something to do with starting it up (deliberately) in Store Mode. One click on Settings gives you a Picture menu which has limited options. If you click again on Settings you get the full menu. I’m using Smart HDR plus reduced brightness and increased black. YMMV. Still experimenting. Vivid is pretty good for daytime tennis in bright room.

Rtings will have the best answer.

I have spent a lot of time reading rtings already, but they don't always mention stuff like stutter issues that you see mentioned on forums/reddit

      • Rtings TV reviews have a whole section on motion, including stutter tests. They always mention it.

        • My bad you're right I missed it

Have a TCL c845 and it's a great TV for it's price, punches well above its weight imo. Has great inbuilt speakers too and not tinny like most TV's. Think it was around 1400ish.

Great for the PS5 too, but the native apps (netflix etc) are really snappy too. Every once in a while (like out of the blue every few months) it will become sluggish but just need to turn it off and on again and it's good as gold.

  • On boxing day I purchased a TCL 75c855 for $1725 minus 5% with good guys gift cards. Strangly though after a few ozbargainers grabbed it at this price it is no longer listed on their website.

But fantastastic TV for a well lit room. Can't fault the TV.

  • When I get a new TV, which is very rarely because they always last so long (>5 years), I just get a base/mid-model Samsung that's on sale, to save myself the hassle/pain of thinking about which TV to get, comparing specs, reading reviews, asking for advice, etc.
