  • Good as a plex server?

    • +7

Not really. HW transcoding on an old iGPU is limited.

      • +4

Agreed. Get a new N100 mini PC for around $50 more. Modern CPU, slightly faster with much better transcoding support.

        • +2

Not to mention less power draw

    • +2

I think I read here on some deal that you want minimum an Intel 8th series chip for 'native' HW transcoding. The Ozbargain pro's here will verify if this is right.

      • +12

7th gen for HW transcoding, 8th gen for official Win 11 support

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/267114971418 this for 169 looks like a better deal

        • Thanks for the verification, so min to get is 8th gen for these refurbished units being used as 'low power' Plex servers and future compatibility with software support, etc. For future proofing somewhat, not sure if this is super important right now, AV1 decoder on Intel iGPUs is from the 11th Gen and onwards

Didn't Microsoft relaxed the hw requirement for Win11 recently?

      • Also note that for Plex HDR to SDR tonemapping 7th to 10th gen can only do this in Linux. 11th gen up it's supported in Windows.

        • I thought there was a bug in Plex with HDR to SDR mapping in windows and it only worked under linux?

Depending on your requirements but yeah, it's limited.

    • My concern would be the PSU and the motherboard, which are both proprietary and SFF. The motherboard in the Dell Precision 3430 i bought just over a year ago went belly up and no one is selling just the mobo alone. Here i am with a Xeon CPU and some RAM which I could re-use, but the psu, case, mobo are landfill now…

So keep this in mind when going for any SFF refurb…

      • Can you pinpoint which part of mobo fried? I thought they are reliable

        • +1

          I wish i could.

PSU works: tested. Swapped CPU with other: no change. Tested RAM in other PC: passed. That left me w the mobo as faulty.

Good to hack NASA with this ?

    • +10

      Sure man, go for it.
I heard you if you're successful, they even give you free food and accommodation for an extended period of time.

      • +2

That's a nice idea, way to escape the rising cost of living in Australia

    • +1

do. you. want. to. play. a. game?

  • Can play 4k files to a TV using the Displayports?

  • This would make a good home firewall with an M2 ethernet card installed instead of the wifi card.

    • +5

For a little bit more you could get a way more capable n97/100/150 minipc with dual NIC

    • I thought only the m720q m920q and above had pcie not the M700 and M900.

  • Is this good to run home assistant?

  • +2

My experience with UN Tech has been good, although IMO anything under 7th gen is borderline e-waste at this point due to lack of native HEVC and Win11 support and these should be sub $80.

    • I agree the price should be lower, but these run Win11 fine with the install hack, and are very capable for other operating systems.
It's only if you want to run video transcoding they start to look slow.

      • +1

It to put it another way, if you are ewasting older sff machines, I'll happily take them!

        • I'll keep that in mind, but i'll also note that it'd have to be cheaper than this to make a sale.

I don't like the idea of the TPM hack for a system that is to be relied upon. It was intended that a Win11 system should a list a TPM2.0 device, and any future updates or software installs could refer to this and cause issue. Far better to get a complying device as they are available for or very close to the price of this.

    • Yeah, I also think they're a bit overpriced, given that there are regular new N100 mini PC deals for ~$200.

      • Do you mind to share the link, im interest for two units.

  • +2

Only good if you plan to use Linux, otherwise it's over priced due to no Win 11 support.

Windows 10 becomes unsupported in November.

Linux Mint is more than adequate.

    • +1

Win11 runs fine if you use the install work around. Win10 won't stop working in November, just have no further patching easily.
But I agree this is expensive for a system that needs those workarounds when you can get 8th gen for about the same price.

    • I'm expecting a standalone Steam O/S release well before windows 10 sunsets end of this year.. for a lot of people that will be all they need to play games, as well as general web browsing (there's still a desktop mode ''hidden'' underneath steam o/s - which a lot of people don't seem to realise).
