[Refurb] Apple iPhone SE 2nd Gen (2020) 64GB $169, iPhone 12 64GB $399 Delivered @ Kmart

101

As with other Kmart clearance items, it's available to order online however showing low or no stock at most stores so try your luck but anticipate a cancellation.

Phone is still viable in 2025 with support for latest iOS 18.

Available in 3 colours but randomly selected; Red, White, Black

No mention of which company it's being supplied through but my guess is Alegre (via Boost Mobile) since Kmart is part of the Coles Group, which had the same sale late last year.

You can buy refurbished phones from Reebelo and Green Gadgets for about the same price, the difference being that you can choose the colour and condition and in some cases stump up for a “new” battery (though take that with a grain of salt). Kmart doesn’t even let you choose the colour which is ridiculous.

      • +3

Yup. Have purchased a “refurb” from Coles in the past which had a severely degraded battery. I’d be avoiding this.

        • +2

Purchased a refurbed 11 from Coles for my mother and its actually going great, sitting at 91% and hasnt skipped a beat.

        • +7

Yeah "refurbished" has sort of lost all meaning now when it comes to tech… It seems to mostly just mean

"we wiped the other guys greasy fingerprints off it … Mostly".

      • +3

Last time I bought a phone from Green Gadgets (June 2024) I shelled out extra for "as new". Battery life was at 87%. When I complained and they said "as new" is solely exterior condition and buried on their website is that all phones are only 80% minimum.

Wouldn't trust them again on that one.

        • +1

They don't hide that. They explain on this page what "As New" means and it doesn't specify anything about battery capacity.

Their FAQs mention that 80% battery health is "acceptable", so there's always a risk that you get a phone with 80% battery.

If you want a phone with a "new" battery, they're listed separately. Then again, I have my doubts about these "new" batteries.

          • +1

@ak47wong: Seems like they've updated that page since I bought it, I can't remember where they directed me to either. Looking back at my emails, they simply told me the 80% minimum was their requirement.

I bought it off their ebay page at the time and went hunting for condition details, they told me that "as new" meant it was like a "brand new" phone. They also didn't have listings with new batteries then either.

At least it seems like they've gotten clearer, and they were ok to deal with. They gave me a partial refund which I'll put towards a new battery further down the track.

        • +1

I’ve bought many phones from GreenGadget. Always go for the one with new 100% battery. Take away the gamble you’ll get one with half decent battery.

        • -2

you're an idiot for not reading the fine print

      • +1

yea ive found reebelo quite good

      • +3

Had nothing but problems from green gadgets, lies about battery percentage, scratches and scrapes and chips all over, had to return three phones and was still not stoked with the final replacements but gave up at that point.
If your gonna describe stuff as like new, it better be actually like new.

      • Check them out but they dont have any 'as new' ones. for the 12.

        • I see As New ones available in 64GB Black and Red and 128GB in Red

    • -1

      Lightning.

      • +2

        Phone's from 2020 though

        • -8

What was a budget option then, is totally outdated now. I understand the pain of users buying a phone for 400 bux, but they should realise that about 300 of that is for the brand name. The lowest amount of memory in currently releasing generations of mobile phones, mobile video cards, etc. is 12Gb. Even iPhone 17 is expected with that amount.

          • +4

@Ozzster: I doubt it, iPhone 15 had 6GB RAM, iPhone 16 had 8GB of RAM to handle the AI stuff.

Like always, rumours are all over the place. There are rumours only the Pro Max will have 12GB RAM too, all the rest will be 8GB. Regardless, Apple phones only need the 8GB for AI stuff, I doubt anyone buying a refurb iPhone will be planning on making use of that stuff.

            • @freefall101: AI stuff needs special CPU, not memory. It would need the memory if you would be developing own AI models, while in fact your phone in many cases uploads it to the cloud to process and downloads the result. Phone's own processing is very little.

            • -8

@freefall101: Speaking of needs for AI, it needs a lot more than any iphone can offer, which is why iphones suck in AI compared to everything else. Don't suck in selling your private talks though.

          • +1

@Ozzster: If $300 of that is for the brand? That means there’s alternatives as good as the iPhone 12 for $100? Can you provide examples please?

            • -7

@Ronnnie: Can do for new phones, as there's no other brand being so popular in refurbish. New will be pricier than 100, of course. https://versus.com/en/apple-iphone-12-vs-xiaomi-redmi-note-1…

              • +1

                @Ozzster: You can’t be serious?….

                • -5

@Ronnnie: Do you seriously want to compare phones after 4 years of random usage? It only can be valid for new phones. Scores for new phones are present on the link above.

                  • +5

@Ozzster: I just did compared the one you mentioned.

                    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/xiaomi-redmi-note-13-5g-2…

Costs 5.5 times more than $100 you figure the iPhone 12 is worth.

                    It offers an inferior chip
                    https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/mediatek-dimensity-608…

It’ll lose out in camera too.

It’ll lose out in various areas.

Unfortunately there isn’t any $100 phones. And the $400 Android new phones will be inferior to iPhone 12 in various areas.

                    • @Ronnnie: Why didn't you mention areas where iPhone 12 is inferior? I posted the link where everything is mentioned and compared, resulting in the same score for both phones, but you preferred one-sided cherrypicking. Let's make a fair comparison, don't forget 2 times worse battery, nearly end of life for the iPhone 12, and the Android one has 3x times more RAM, 8.75x more megapixels (main camera), 9.34% bigger screen size, and memory slot.

Unfortunately there isn’t any $100 phones because I didn't compare refurbish. If you insist on comparing trash we can see what's on Gumtree for $100.
This is new for $350 on Aliexpress. Overall, it is not worse than the iPhone 12, and $400 phones will be even better. If you start doing fair comparison.

Does the 60 days return policy apply for iPhone at Kmart?

    • OOS

      • Depends where you are. There are stores with stock according to the "Find in store" screen.

    • is it wise to buy this to take videos? i like my phone, but my phone cant take good videos

      • -2

No. Buy a new mid range android phone for a similar price, it will take much better photos.

        • +5

This is somewhat misleading. Often older flagship Android or iPhone have much better camera than the latest mid-ranger.

        • +2

The person is asking about recording videos. The answer is, iPhones take better videos than any Android phones, so get an iPhone.

Android phones skip frames and stutter when recording videos regardless of the phone manufacturer.

        • The newest midrange phones have generally speaking crap cameras. Usually because of a couple of factors, cheaper inferior lenses and less software optimisations. Don’t be fooled by the megapickles ratings. That’s part of the sacrifices needed to be made in order to reach those price points. The only exceptions typically to this are the cheaper pixel models. Because Google has some of the best software. The iPhone 12 is still pretty decent phone camera wise and will undoubtedly be better than most alternatives at this price, new or used.

      • +2

        Best photos > Pixel
        Best videos > iphone
better photos and videos > Samsung

        • +2

Samsung’s audio recording quality is pretty mediocre in my experience. I’ve found the audio is really distorted compared to iPhone when the environment is really loud.

          • +2

@no not me: yes, iPhone is best for videos like said

        • +4

          Best snake game > Nokia

        • Huawei/Honor gets top camera scores for a reason, and has some benefits vs Pixel.

      • In full sunlight, they take excellent videos. Anything less than that and you'll find it lacking somewhat. I had the iPhone 12 Mini, though

  • +1

Careful, it's possible this model may get phased out this year. Which means, no more iOS updates. SE v4 is expected soon.

    • +1

Still getting security patches on iPhone 8.

    • While possible, that's probably quite unlikely. If anything gets phased out this year it will be XS/XR, and even that is rumoured to be supported.

So the best guess at this point in time is that the SE/2020 will get 19.

  • FYI - Kmart is not part of Coles Group

    Warranty
    Manufacturer warranty: 12 months

Not a chance. Blatant false advertising.

    • +1

I don’t know how these retailers operate but the refurbished iPhones that Apple sells itself, they do come with a 1 year warranty.
Maybe Apple offers the same privilege to goods sold by these 3rd party retailers.

      • -4

Nah, they don’t offer any sort of warranty on five year old used phones.

        • +1

True, Apple doesn’t directly sell anything older than a refurbished iPhone 13 Pro Max but I was just speculating that maybe they get 3rd party retailers to sell their old goods for them, just so they can protect their own brand image.

  • You will likely receive and overseas (maybe Japanese) version phone.

  • +3

Experiences vary but my experience with a "refurbished" model sold through Coles was pretty disappointing.

The model wasn't refurbished at all and wasn't cleaned, had significant wear, battery was shot and the touchscreen wasn't accurate. It was troublesome to get a refund but ended up getting my money back.

Unless you can see, assess and test the phone I'd stay away as it's absolute pot luck on the condition you'll get.

    • +2

True that it is pot luck, but I got my 11 year old one from coles for xmas and it was such good condition I thought it might have been new until I checked the battery health (was in the 90% range). Was an Aussie model too.

Now you hit the jackpot, the rest can skip the deal… XD

  • Hi, I need an iphone just pureply for apple family control purpose. Will this work for many years to comes still or do i at least get gen3? My kids have ipad 10th gen for school this year. Thanks!

  • A 5-year-old iPhone lol.

    Reporting my experience:

Purchasing as an “emergency spare” (my old spare iPhones won’t do iOS 18 and my iCloud backups are now all 18).

    Onepass delivered from Joondalup today.

I got a red (yay!) SE 2020 64GB. In very good physical condition, off brand charger box and cable. Powered it on, iOS 18.0 (interestingly its default country was “China mainland” hmm). Battery reports as Genuine and 89% health.

So far very good for the price…
