  • FYI: In Firefox, if you open smh.com.au links in private browsing mode, you won't have the paywall issue

    • I must be doing something wrong, but I still hit the paywall going this way.

      • Interesting, I am also using the extension UBlock Origin but I just disabled it and still didn't get the paywall.

  • Woolworths does stock Elato but seemingly it never goes half price.
Also, unbelievable to see Coles ice cream be ranked so high in one survey.

  • +3

I love how delicious.com.au, a NewsCorp brand (and NewsCorp generally have a close relationship with Woolworths), didn't review Coles or Aldi house brands.

BTW, you can find Elato branded ice cream at Woolworths, and Van Diemens Land Creamery ice cream also at Woolworths.

  • Riva has the best ice cream, just no way to buy it at the consumer level sadly.

  • Norco Cape Byron is very good flavour and texture wise, but I find it overly sweet. Still my first choice for readily available vanilla ice cream.

  • +2

I like Streets blue ribbon vanilla ice cream, available at Aldi.

I rate it higher than bulla, the Coles and Woolies branded stuff and even connoisseur.

Each to their own of course.

    • +2

The thing about blue ribbon ice creams is that their prime ingredient is always ‘reconstituted milk’
Connoisseur and Bulla atleast have some actual cream % in them.

    • +5

Contains gelatine, gross. That has no place in ice cream. And actually it is a 'frozen dessert' rather than ice cream: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/40568/blue…

I use to rate it until it they replaced milk with skim milk and increased sugar to make it a "low fat" ice cream.

    • When did you last try Streets? it is garbage "ice confection" now.

I think the only real ice-cream still sold in 2 litre tubs is Bulla. I like Bulla, but so full of air, 2 litres is only 920g.
The on-litre tubs are nearly as much: 770g for some. 680g for coles brand.

Like I’m going to trust any of these surveys. I leave it up to the professionals.

Cover all 9,000 taste buds, aerate it, warm it, driving up, that top note, that cream, pure vanilla, sweeteners… mmm…

    that’s a 10!

  • +1

A whole lot of chaff to waste time on convincing us about the Emperors new clothes.
You do you. I can vouch for Streets Vanilla.Or DIY. Most ppl would fail a blind test on the list every time.

  • +8

And the only thing this tells me is that these types of “reviews” are A: subjective, and B: more like advertising dressed up as reviews.

    • +3

Especially Choice. The amount of times they've provided reviews bad mouthing a product in favour of another and then having at the bottom in small text a disclaimer that they never tested what they were shitting on.

      • Or like how publications like Drive can make a "2024 Car of the Year" for a car that no one can buy and it's now 2025 and still none have been delivered.

Reviews have been watered down to the point that they are not even worth reading and some come with a warning like "for entertainment purposes only".

  • +3

Everyone will have their own favourites.

A lot of these are just going to be paid ads though.

  • +1

Surveys like this are worthless. You already know the difference between icecream and over-aerated "ice confection".
More discriminating results need a double-blind test, as surveys are affected by factors like price, advertising and packaging. And who pays for the article.

  • Because I am allergic to the supermarkets,
My partner buys only the red one when it is on sale at <>$6.50.
I think it was the only one that said "Ice Cream" on the front.
I'm out of stock at the moment, so can't verify

  • The coles vanialla icecream is very good price performance.
