Does This Work in Australia? Reducing Microsoft 365 Subscription Cost by Attempting to Cancel Plan

Is this a deal? If so, please post it.

Apparently, in NZ if you cancel your Microsoft 365 plan you will be offered Microsoft 365 without Copilot (called Microsoft 365 Classic). This plan is the old price.

It sounds like the recent Microsoft 365 price increases aren’t price increases at all, they are upsells to include CoPilot in the subscription.

Could try telling them it's your birthday.

If no good, also try wedding anniversary, or maybe bar mitzvah

I hope you leave a fat tip when they sing happy birthday

There are quite a few very good Office suites that are 100% compatible with MS office and FREE OF CHARGE

Unless you need the latest and greatest features (usually at highly qualified company level) , these will more than suffice.

      See here:

      • You won't get to have shots with the owner.

  • +4

Why don't you try it, and report back?

    • I can’t. My subscription is through Apple.

  • Microsoft is also killing off Outlook in favour of the new Outlook which is complete garbage. This subscription isn't really worth having.

  • +1

Adobe does a similar thing. Threaten to cancel and it drops to like $40 a month for the entire 12 months. Wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft offers something similar.

    • I don't think I'd pay $40/month for any software, let alone whatever the original price was. That kind of price is going to make me pirate it 100% of the time. If you don't like it, sue me (or have fun trying).

      • Full price is like $80 iirc. A month. If you're paying for the whole Adobe CS then you are probably making money from it. Plenty of people have it just for a hobby though, or small business owners convincing themselves they can do it all themselves.

      • +3

People who pirate and then go to lengths to justify it are insane. Just pirate, nobody cares.

        • +2

I don't feel the need to justify it - and I didn't try to. It's a pure cost/benefit analysis for me. Make it easy and convenient to get the product legitimately (e.g. most Steam games) and I will not pirate.

          • +2

@justworld: you're still justifying it. you're making it sound like adobe isn't available in your country.

            It's a pure cost/benefit analysis for me.

            I don't think I'd pay $40/month for any software

            k buddy

            • @askbargain: I don't think you understand what 'justify' means.

I'm telling you my rationale for making a choice. The choice is completely open to me. Just because Adobe is available doesn't mean I have to get it legitimately. If I felt I was so constrained, then indeed I would need to 'justify' not doing so.

The funny thing is that you are accusing me of doing exactly the thing that you yourself want me to do, which is to justify why I pirate something that's available in Australia.

Would you download a car? Wait, I don't think I got that right…

        • I did the pirate thing for years but it became too tedious trying to keep ahead of their piracy purges. They are getting more determined to sink the black Swan.

      • I don't think I'd have standing to sue you, but I will consult my solicitor and barrister. They will have fun sending their bills.

    • I have been paying $23AUD per month for adobe for 6 years now cause I threaten to cancel each time and they give a counter offer. Waiting for the day I have to start a new account lol.

That's why I don't save anything to adobe cloud incase I have to pay more lol

      • That just reminded me to go to "cancel" my account and they offered me the two free months. Winning 🥇

I effectively saved 100% on my subscription by moving to other alternatives like Libre Office and Thunderbird, so yes, cancelling does save you plenty…

  • I saved lots, I still use office 2013… does everything in word/excel I need.

    • For security reasons that's quite a bad idea, you might be better off with a modern free alternative like google docs.

  • I got the same email and went to purchase a digital top up which helpfully is being offered at the "old" price (although when it was truly the old price the digital keys were about $30 less than that old price, so still an increase - but if you were paying the full old price anyway, this would let you let you prepay). You can preload a few to extend the expiry (effectively like a prepaid plan).

  • It says for me

    CURRENT SUBSCRIPTION
    Microsoft 365 Personal
    AU$111.30/year

    CURRENT SUBSCRIPTION WITHOUT AI
    Microsoft 365 Personal Classic
    AU$109.00/year

I usually pay like $76.30 a year (that is what I paid last year) .Can't bellieve the price increased?

What is the use of CoPilot?

    • anyone been able to get the Microsoft Workplace Discount Programme (formerly known as Home Use Programme) to work on the Personal Classic plan?

I too have the same price shown which means I effectively lose my discount in switching to the Classic, making it not worthwhile.

  • Starting on 01/03/2025, the price for your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription will change from AUD 109.00/year to AUD 159.00/year. You will be charged the new price unless you cancel or turn off recurring billing at least two days before your next billing date by visiting your Microsoft account.

    Ridiculous.

SaaS seemed like a better deal when it first started but it's now nothing more than a bloated cash cow.

    • Yes, make it so you no longer have control over installed software, then you're at their mercy.

    • +1

Well that's always been the aim. Why sell something once when you can get people reliant on it and then crank it up to slightly below the point where everyone cancels, and then milk them for multiple times what the software is worth?

  • I'm about to purchase a single licence for Office 2024, probably Home Edition.

They're asking far too much to have Office 365. And what's the point when you only use Word & Excel anyway.

  • Just received a renewal for Microsoft subscription from $109 to $150. That's some inflation percentage!

It's fir a work computer, so I'll pay it, but grudgingly.

    • Did you read the post? You should be able to 'cancel' and it you'll be offered Microsoft 365 Classic for $109 which excludes CoPilot.

Let us know if it works?

  • Try and let us know OP.

  • My copy will let me instal all sorts of extras - Access, Outlook, Onenote, permanent license
You just need to sail the 7 seas

  • +1

@guidedlight - so I gave it a try, clicked on Cancel and yes, it then presented me with an option to swatch to "Microsoft 365 Family Classic" for AU$139.00/year.

    • Not a bargain but better than a poke in the eye. Ill take it.
