Where to Find Businesses for Sale?

Just curious if anyone has had experience buying businesses? Is there like a single website equivalent of domain.com.au where you can see all listings in various categories? Also any business brokers they can recommend as it looks like there are fair few of them.

I know facebook marketplace and gumtree has listing for hospitality type businesses. How about virtual businesses like IT services, ecommerce stores, etc.

It's almost as though OP doesn't have access to Google.

    https://flippa.com/

Many lemons as people generally don't sell good businesses

Many have a basic framework setup, even automated with supplies and can generate some level of earnings

Need know how to do your due diligence and know how to improve on their business model and structure

Can resell/flip on the site if you're improved it slightly and doesn't improve to a level you want

Just remember, no one is selling a gold mine.

They'll put up the usual BS that they're retiring, health reasons, moving overseas, etc, etc, and potentially cook the books.

Not always true, many people sell a 'gold mine' due to retiring or health as they don't want to have to deal with it anymore.

A friend sold a business, it was a gold mine, they wanted to retire and didn't want the hassle of dealing with it/staff/managers to keep it.

But yes, you need to review the business for sure before buying.

Scotty is retiring soon, you could buy OZB from him? I bet it's worth more than your typical small business you see for sale on Facebook though. He has staff that will probably continue running it anyway.

    • I don't think it's for sale :).

  • What results did google give when you tried to find sites?

  • Are you trying to get into commercial property or buy an actual business? The former would be a better idea than the latter.

    • Thanks for suggestion

      • Recon you check out Steve Palise's book on commercial property. Usually comes free every few months, just pay the $10 shipping. It's not the be all end all and he is a BA at the end of the day and has his own agenda but the book has some useful info.

        • Thanks for advice. I actually have that book. I'll give that a read.

  • You can try Gumtree, Insta, Thick Tok, Marketplace or even X , however the quality of business may not be so good - caveat Emptor. The other option would be anywhere in Melbourne CBD as they all benefit from JA's economic strategy and miracle…🤔

A bit over 6 years ago i bought a precast business. Found it through one of the sites listed above. The agent was paramount business brokers. Fast forward 6 years and it has been super hard slog but im still here and finally the business is in a pretty good spot.

I looked at about 3 businesses at the time and settled on this one. I had no experience in any form of concrete prior! Previous owner wanted to retire.

There are plenty of legitimate business sales as well as dodgy ones. Feel free to pm me if you want further advice.

We also bought another business last year and my business partner runs that one with little input myself. Still early days but it seems positive. This one had no agent but was found thru the usual sites. The vendors wanted to retire and were building their forever home in another country, we are still in contact and they are just the nicest people you could meet!!!

    Good luck in your search.

  • If you're up for a read, e-myth revisited just makes life better. But very helpful to set ur brain into business basics mode. Good habits from the start. Just my opinion…

  • I think you need to narrow down a bit, what industry? Some are very specialised: AusPost, McD, Body Shop or any business.
We had looked at Mgt Rights and Strata Management. Let me know if you want more info.

    • Lots of people are retiring from management rights and strata management.. it's a very lucrative and profitable industry

Can negotiate with the owners to sublease the property and then Airbnb out their property

Hire some staff to do all the work and you get good passive income

Do you have any other businesses to recommend?

  • I just finished 10 weeks annual leave and for the first time in my 40 year career I had a staycation as I wanted to see what is was like before I retire in 2 years time.

I didn’t like it, so now I want to look for a business that I can purchase that is not as labour intensive of 55 hours per week (which is typically what I have worked for the last 40 years) but more realistic around 30 hours or less a week. I thinking of something like a laundromat, although I have not seen too many for sale on these websites. Does anyone know if there are dedicated sites that advertise the sale of of laundromats?
